Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a long way from Banff, Alberta, but it is clear that the journey was worth it for Mary Schäffer Warren (1861-1939), an American writer, painter and photographer, and her first husband, Dr. Charles Schäffer, an amateur botanist. From their first visit to the Canadian Rockies in 1889, they travelled back nearly every summer to study the wildflowers. Mary continued these mountain explorations after Charles’ death in 1903, pushing deep into the wilderness.
