KRAKOW, Poland (AP) — When Nastya Podorozhnya’s relatives fled the war in Ukraine for neighboring Poland, volunteers welcomed them with open arms. Podorozhnya, 29, was already living in Poland when the war began. But days before Russia’s full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022, she rushed back to Ukraine to help her sister and nieces get out. As she returned to Poland alongside an influx of refugees in the war’s first days, she witnessed the outpouring of support from Polish volunteers.

RINCON, Ga. (WSAV) — Monday night, Rincon city council unanimously voted to approve a mileage rate increase for the first time in 28 years. For the past month Rincon city officials have held multiple public hearings about their proposed mileage rate increase. Monday, that increase was voted on and approved. The mileage rate increased from 0.00 mills to 2.323 mills. This is considered a 100% property tax increase. City leaders said the increase is needed to keep up with continued growth.

CHICAGO. (WSAV) — A man accused of child molestation in Savannah, Georgia was found over 14 hours away in Chicago, Illinois, law enforcement officials announced Aug. 14. Twenty-five-year-old Jalynn Montgomery is accused of sending an obscene photo of himself to a child, officials said. Montgomery was wanted by the Savannah Police Department in connection to the incident but was ultimately arrested by Cook County Sheriff’s Office officials in Chicago.

(NewsNation) — Working a summer job is no longer the rite of passage it once was for American teens. Just over a third of teens ages 16 to 19 have held a paying job for at least part of this summer — down from more than half as recently as 2000, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of federal data. That contrast reflects a decades-long decline in teen summer employment, which stood at 50% or higher during most summers from 1948 through 2000.

(The Hill) – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval for a new test for Alzheimer’s disease, marking the fourth time such a blood test has been approved in less than two years. Roche announced on Sunday that the FDA had granted approval to its Elecsys Phospho-Tau blood test for diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease. It’s the fourth such test to be granted FDA approval after the first was given the green light in May 2025.

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — A Peruvian court on Monday evening convicted four men of murder-for-hire and sentenced them to between 15 and 35 years in prison for the 2023 killing of Indigenous rainforest defender Quinto Inuma Alvarado, in a closely watched case seen as a test of accountability for violence against Indigenous and environmental defenders in the Amazon. Genix Saboya Saboya and Limber Ríos Ruiz were each sentenced to 35 years in prison.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Dozens of foreign exchange students from all over the world spent the weekend in Savannah. It was the kickoff for the Georgia Rotary Student Program (GRSP), an effort that started in 1946 to promote peace after World War II, which is marking its 80th year. Rotary clubs all across the state sponsor college students to attend colleges and universities all over Georgia. This year’s group features nearly 40 students from 20 countries.
