What I Learned from Bach, the Worship Director
The Swiss theologian Karl Barth once said, “It may be that when the angels go about their task praising God, they play only Bach. I am sure, however, that when they are together en famille, they play Mozart.” I once shared the opinion of Barth’s angels. My appreciation for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach has been slow to awaken. I remember as a teenage musician seeing his pieces as worthy but not exciting. They were exact and exacting––but who wants music to be a technical exercise only?

Insulin regulation of regional lipolysis in upper-body obese and lean humans
Background. Upper body obesity (UBO) results in insulin resistance with regards to free fatty acid (FFA) release; how this differs by fat depot and sex between UBO and lean adults is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that insulin suppression of FFA release from the splanchnic bed, leg fat and upper body non-splanchnic (UBNS) adipose tissue would be impaired in UBO. Methods.
Where Is the Spirit of Cricket?
Recent sporting headlines and commentary have been dominated by the controversy concerning the dismissal of English batsman Johnny Bairstow on the final day of the second Ashes Test at Lords. Bairstow was deemed out, stumped by Australian wicket-keeper Alex Carey after Bairstow wandered out of his crease and Carey threw down the stumps. The controversy concerned whether the ball was ‘dead’ before Bairstow left his crease.

Three reasons why disinformation is so pervasive and what we can do about it
Donald Trump derided any critical news coverage as "fake news" and his unwillingness to concede the 2020 presidential election eventually led to the January 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol. For years, radio host Alex Jones denounced the parents of children slaughtered in the Sandy Hook school shooting in Newton, Connecticut as "crisis actors". On August 5, 2022 he was ordered by a jury to pay more than USD 49 million in damages to two families for defamation.

Here's how disinformation could disrupt the Australian election Original
Disinformation and foreign interference constitute a grave threat to Western democracies, particularly during elections. Both the 2016 US election and the 2019 UK election were targeted by Russian disinformation campaigns. Already, we are seeing disinformation operations in the lead-up to the Australian federal election targeting both parties – and the election system itself.
Inter-Nesting Movements, Migratory Pathways, and Resident Foraging Areas of Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) Satellite-Tagged in Southwest Florida
Introduction Green turtles (Chelonia mydas) are widely distributed, nesting circumglobally in temperate and tropical waters. A 2004 study estimated that green turtle populations had declined by 37–61% worldwide over the previous 141 years (Seminoff, 2004) and consequently the species is classified as globally endangered (Baillie et al., 2004).
Mayo Clinic Q&A: How to Reverse Prediabetes
DEAR MAYO CLINIC: I’m a 36-year-old man recently diagnosed with prediabetes. Is there a way to reverse this, or am I destined to eventually get diabetes? My healthcare provider says I’ve likely been in the prediabetes stage for a year or more. ANSWER: There are steps you can take to slow the progression of prediabetes to type 2 diabetes. You may even be able to stop or reverse it.
Far right and extremist groups are targeting military veterans for recruitment. Does the ADF owe them a duty of care?
Even before extremist group activity in Australia’s 2021 anti-lockdown protests was exposed, concern about right-wing extremism in Australia was on the rise. ASIO and the US annual threat estimate have noted right-wing extremism in Australia is on an upward trend. Ideological extremism now makes up 40% of the ASIO caseload. Our research at the University of Canberra’s National Security Hub is investigating online influence operations targeting Australia, including its veteran community.
Red blood cell triglycerides-a unique pool that incorporates plasma-free fatty acids and relates to metabolic health
Abstract Most research into red blood cell (RBC) lipids focuses on membrane phospholipids and their relationships to metabolic conditions and diet. Triglycerides (TGs) exist in most cells; the TG-fatty acids serve as readily available fuel for oxidative phosphorylation. Because RBCs lack mitochondria, they would not be expected to store fatty acids in TG.
Australian perspectives on misinformation
Description Concerns about the health of democracy and the public sphere are increasing due to the ease with which foreign and domestic malign actors can spread misleading and manipulative claims. Misinformation, or misleading information spread unwittingly, is often distinguished from disinformation, which is misleading information spread with the intent to cause harm.
How misinformation about 5G is spreading within our government institutions – and who's responsible
“Fake news” is not just a problem of misleading or false claims on fringe websites, it is increasingly filtering into the mainstream and has the potential to be deeply destructive. My recent analysis of more than 500 public submissions to a parliamentary committee on the launch of 5G in Australia shows just how pervasive misinformation campaigns have become at the highest levels of government. A significant number of the submissions peddled inaccurate claims about the health effects of 5G.
Are Americans the stupidest people in the world?
Are Americans more stupid than the rest of the world? A recent headline in the Washington Post reported, “Making men feel manly in masks is, unfortunately, a public-health challenge of our time.” Wearing face masks is proven to dramatically reduce infection rates and the resulting fatalities from COVID-19. But a public health challenge in America is… getting men to wear the damn masks? Seriously? Related: Why are the major travel associations aligning themselves with anti-LGBT forces?

Informing Adults With HIV of Cognitive Performance Deficits Indicative of HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder: A Content Analysis
Approximately 50% of persons with HIV (PWH) meet the cognitive criteria for HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). Informing PWH they may have HAND raises concerns given the lack of consensus-derived treatment options and overall knowledge about HAND. Thus, the current qualitative descriptive study aimed to describe PWHs' reactions to a possible diagnosis of HAND. Cognitive tests were administered to 135 PWH to determine whether they met the criteria for HAND.

Preliminary evidence for reduced adipose tissue inflammation in vegetarians compared with omnivores
Abstract Background There are links between obesity and inflammation that may relate activation of pro-inflammatory pathways by dietary factors. Because dietary fat intake of vegetarians is thought to be more beneficial than that of omnivores, we hypothesized that obese vegetarians would have less adipose tissue inflammation and lower intramyocellular ceramide concentrations than equally obese omnivores.

Metformin modulates immune cell infiltration into the kidney during unilateral ureteral obstruction in mice
Abstract Metformin is today the first choice treatment for type‐2 diabetes, but has also protective effects in several renal disease models. Previously, we have demonstrated that the protective effects in response to unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) are independent of organic cation transporters (OCTs), the transporters responsible for the metformin uptake into the renal cells.
Traceless aptamer-mediated isolation of CD8+ T cells for chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy
Abstract Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapies using defined product compositions require high-purity T-cell isolation systems that, unlike immunomagnetic positive enrichment, are inexpensive and leave no trace on the final cell product. Here, we show that DNA aptamers (generated with a modified cell−SELEX procedure to display low-nanomolar affinity for the T-cell marker CD8) enable the traceless isolation of pure CD8+ T cells at low cost and high yield.
The government and tech companies can't prevent 'fake news' during the election – only the public can - EconoTimes
We’re only days into the federal election campaign and already the first instances of “fake news” have surfaced online. How digital media blur the border between Australia and China
In September, the ABC website was blocked from being accessed inside China. The reason given was the ABC’s “aggressive” reporting on China. Prime Minister Scott Morrison responded by saying that: China’s a sovereign country. They make decisions about what happens there, we make decisions about what happens here. But things are a little more complex than that, particularly when it comes to news published on Chinese social media platforms.
