The Internet is a Series of Cables
I just had to write this one up, because everyone deserves to know stupid tricks that work. This is also a story of my reason for needing to do something this stupid. If you just want to get to the stupid trick part, you can skip ahead. If you want to feel a little of my pain, then read on. If you don’t follow me on twitter, you probably didn’t see that last fall we were fortunate enough to move into a newly built home. And it’s just lovely, really it is.

Did the COVID-19 Pandemic Dampen Americans’ Tipping for Food Services? Insights From Two Studies
Many service workers depend on voluntary gifts of money (called tips in the United States) from their customers for a substantial portion of their incomes. Those workers receiving tips from customers include airport porters, baristas, bartenders, bellmen, busboys, concierges, courtesy van drivers, croupiers, doormen, golf caddies, hotel maids, parking valets, sommeliers, taxicab drivers, tour guides, and waiters (Lynn, 2016, 2019).
New Book Highlights Need for Solidarity for Humans to Survive Global Collapse
Is this the end? The end of capitalism? The end of the human species? Anyone who has closely observed developments of the last 10 years can be forgiven a quick affirmative response. In a decade that has seen startling discoveries in climate science (none positive), unprecedented fires, and increasingly frequent and far more destructive tropical storms and hurricanes, the evidence is clearer than ever that our economic plunder of the planet’s natural bounty has gone too far.

Michael Lynn, CEO @relendex discusses how P2P lending can revitalise the UK's SME housebuilders
The single major impediment to SME housebuilders increasing their output is their inability to finance projects. Since the financial crisis, only the most established housebuilders whose credit record remains intact have managed to maintain their banking relationships and, even then, they are severely constrained. For many, this has meant that rates are prohibitive and projects fail before they even start.

Consumer Racial Discrimination in Tipping: A Replication and Extension
This study examined the effects of server race, customer race, and their interaction on restaurant tips while statistically controlling for customers' perceptions of service quality and other variables. The findings indicate that consumers of both races discriminated against Black service providers by tipping them less than White service providers. Furthermore, this server race effect on tipping was moderated by perceived service quality and dining party size.
No tipping policies are bad for customer satisfaction, according to research
Some journalists and other social commentators have in recent years called for the abolition of restaurant tipping, primarily because they argue that it hurts workers. Several restaurateurs have even replaced tipping at their restaurants with automatic service charges or inclusive pricing.Another argument against tipping is that it detracts from customers’ dining experience.

Read the views of @relendex and its take on how institutional funds are impacting the P2P lending landscape
The origin of peer-to-peer (P2P) was about individuals providing funding to individuals. A many-to-many model that works well and in which – much like the US experience – the lender base has changed quite a bit since it started. These online exchanges mostly appeared following the 2008 financial crisis to alleviate the shortfall in lending to individuals and were viable as a result of low-cost technology and fair margins.

Conciseness is Critical
Authors of empirical CQ articles must explicitly and clearly identify: (1) what causal relationship they are focusing on, (2) who should care about that relationship and why, (3) what existing research in all academic journals, not just hospitality journals, says about that relationship, (4) why additional tests of the relationship are needed and how their study will improve our knowledge about that relationship, (5) their study methodology and findings, and (6) the theoretical and practical...

Racial and Ethnic Differences in Tipping
In U.S. restaurants, racial and ethnic minorities often tip less than whites. These differences in tipping create numerous problems ranging from discriminatory service to restaurant executives’ reluctance to open restaurants in minority communities. Thus, racial differences in tipping need to be sizably reduced, which requires an understanding of their underlying causes.
My Attitudes and Beliefs About Different Types of Research
When my editorship of Cornell Hospitality Quarterly (CQ) was first announced at the 2015 ICHRIE Conference, one of the most common questions people asked me was what kinds of research I liked and disliked. I assume the questioners sought this information to guide decisions about which of their research projects to target at CQ and which to send elsewhere. The politically correct and fortunately truthful answer is that I am a catholic methodologist and like good research of all types.
The Business Case for (and Against) Restaurant Tipping
Recent interest in replacing tipping with service charges or higher service-inclusive menu pricing prompted this review of empirical evidence on the advantages and disadvantages to restaurants of these different compensation systems. The evidence indicates that these different pricing systems affect the attraction and retention of service workers, the satisfaction of customers with service, the actual and perceived costs of eating out, and the costs of hiring employees and doing business.

Improving the Review Policy and Process for Authors and Reviewers
In this issue’s “From the Editor,” I describe a new review policy and process for both authors and reviewers. Authors should find that this new policy and process provides them with faster editorial decisions, higher quality feedback, and greater clarity about required revisions, as well as greater freedom to disagree with reviewers and to write the papers they (the authors) want.

Reach Out and Touch Your Customers
This study of 105 dining parties at a casual chain restaurant found that a male server received significantly larger tips when he touched the shoulder of the person paying the bill than when he did not touch the customer. This touch effect on tips was essentially the same whether the touch was for two or four seconds, and whether the customer being touched was male or female.

Does the Stenting Versus Aggressive Medical Therapy Trial Support Stenting for Subgroups With Intracranial Stenosis?
Background and Purpose—Although the Stenting Versus Aggressive Medical Therapy for Intracranial Arterial Stenosis (SAMMPRIS) trial showed that medical therapy alone was superior to stenting plus medical therapy for preventing recurrent strokes in patients with symptomatic intracranial stenosis, we determined whether SAMMPRIS supported the use of stenting in any subpopulations of patients with symptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis.
Can We Teach Restaurant Servers to Treat All Customers Equally, Regardless of Race?
For instance, one customer may tip generously even after receiving poor service. Another may verbally praise a server for providing excellent service, only to leave the restaurant without tipping. Nonetheless, restaurant servers do notice patterns. Since many in the United States rely on tips for most (if not all) of their income, the custom of tipping presents servers with a powerful economic incentive to anticipate and react to customers’ tipping tendencies.
What’s behind racial differences in restaurant tipping?
January 21, 2015 Within the U.S. restaurant industry, black customers are generally considered comparatively poor tippers. One recent survey of roughly 1,000 restaurant servers from across the nation found that 34 percent thought black diners were “very bad” tippers. An additional 36 percent thought black patrons were “below average” tippers. In contrast, 98 percent of those surveyed believed white customers were “average” or “above average” tippers.
