Anthropogenic global warming increases the risk of record-breaking extreme precipitation events in low-income countries

Abstract There is growing evidence that extreme precipitation intensifies as the climate warms, increasing the likelihood of unprecedented extreme precipitation events (UEPEs). Assessing the risks of these events requires integrating climate projections with socioeconomic factors that shape exposure and vulnerability. Using an integrative framework, we find that low-income countries face a disproportionately high probability of UEPEs—1.5 to 3.4 times greater than that of high-income nations.

1 Introduction Over the past few decades, there has been growing evidence that the intensity of daily and sub-daily extreme precipitation increases at the global scale at a rate of approximately 7% per 1°C of warming, which is consistent with rates expected by the Clausius-Clapeyron (C-C) relationship (Allen & Ingram, 2002; Pall et al., 2006; Seneviratne et al., 2021; Wasko et al., 2021).

1 Introduction California is especially susceptible to major cool season flood events (Kattelmann, 1997). Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are largely responsible, accounting for 84% of flood damages in the western United States (Corringham et al., 2019). The most notable California flood event, measured by its intensity, duration, and inundation area, occurred in 1861/1862 (X. Huang & Swain, 2022; Porter et al., 2011).
