Neither do you! This is because baseball is wonderful and dumb and random and we are all at the mercy of duck snorts and crabby umpires and miracle homers by number nine hitters. You have to be sick to tie your mental or emotional well-being to the outcomes of these games, but the good news is none of us are well.

The Long Game turns five!
Hi friends- I can’t believe this newsletter is now five (!!!) years old. Back when I launched The Long Game in the summer of 2021, I sought to create a baseball community on the Internet that was not…… infected by any of the bad parts of the Internet. Short of manually approving every single post in the comments or chat, I had no idea if that goal was even possible, or if there was even a critical mass of people who were craving the same safe haven I was.

Episode 2 of The Joy of Baseball podcast is out, and it’s a great one: Joe and I talk with Detroit Tigers play-by-play announcer— and one of the truly fantastic people in the game—Jason Benetti. It was especially meaningful to me to ask him how he finds his purpose calling baseball games while the world burns, and how he still musters his enthusiasm to do his job when he’s having a bad day.

Joe and Molly kick things off with none other than legendary television writer and producer, die-hard Red Sox fan, and, of course, one of their closest friends, Mike Schur. Mike recalls the memories that shaped his lifelong love of the Red Sox (even when they made it extremely difficult), and how that fandom brought him an unexpected sense of comfort during one of the darkest times.

For reasons between Dodgers’ owner Mark Walter and God, his back-to-back defending World Series champion baseball team got on a bus in Philadelphia on their day off yesterday and trekked down to the White House to shake hands with—and present a literal ring to!— a man who thinks half the team’s fanbase should be deported.

After a disastrous off-season where the Mets front office let fan favorites Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz walk, then panicked and signed a shortstop to play third base,traded for an old statue to play second base, then signed a second baseman to play first base, New York now predictably finds itself 16 games under .500 at 41-57, in last place in their division.

Did the entire MLB scouting industry whiff on Munetaka Murakami?
(Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images) Seconds after Munetaka Murakami launched a 451-foot nuke to dead center at Chase Field in Arizona on Wednesday night, I texted a friend in an MLB front office and asked why the hell his team didn’t sign the Japanese slugger. It wasn’t just that Murakami’s homer traveled 451 feet at a speed of 110 miles per hour that caused me to leap off my couch and into my text messages. This was Murakami’s fifth straight game with a homer, tying an MLB rookie record.
I saw the Mets play baseball in person this week. It wasn't good.
