“The biggest lesson that can be read from 70 years of AI research,” wrote ACM A.M. Turing Laureate Richard S. Sutton in a widely read 2019 essay titled “The Bitter Lesson,” is that “general methods that leverage computation are ultimately the most effective, and by a large margin.
Whither Computing?
A new team will assume the leadership of ACM on July 1, 2026, following the current general election and search for a new chief executive officer. I believe this team will have to grapple with existential questions about the future of computing as a science and a profession. In a meeting I recently had with 20 Ph.D. students in a department I visited, it became clear they were asking themselves if they had made a good decision to pursue a doctorate in computer science (CS).

The Blogs: From Rice University to the Bondi Beach Massacre
On 14 December 2025, a terrorist mass shooting occurred at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, in the early evening during a Hannukah celebration attended by approximately one thousand people. Two gunmen killed 15 people, including a 10-year-old child. Australian Federal Police declared it an Islamic–linked terrorist attack. N umerous world leaders, news outlets and Australian authorities declared that the shooting was motivated by antisemitism.
The Blogs: A Letter to a Keffiyeh-Clad University Colleague
Dear Rice University Colleague: On the evening of Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the procession leading to the undergraduate commencement ceremony at the Rice University football stadium, two Rice faculty members were marching wearing regalia, and, on top of that, keffiyehs. The keffiyeh is a traditional headdress worn by men from parts of the Middle East, but it has recently come to symbolize also solidarity with Palestinians.
Debate over H-1B visas shines spotlight on US tech worker shortages
A heated debate has recently erupted between two groups of supporters of President Donald Trump. The dispute concerns the H-1B visa system, the program that allows U.S. employers to hire skilled foreign workers in specialty occupations – mostly in the tech industry.
The Blogs: Rice University received a C from ADL. Does it deserve it?
On March 3, 2025, the Anti-Defamation League issued a new antisemitism report cards for 135 colleges and universities across the US. Rice University, in Houston, TX, received the grade of C. When the ADL report card was first issued in 2024, Rice received a D. Let’s analyze the recent report card and see if Rice really deserved a raise. 1.

The United State of America - What Happened?
I am a Israeli American who has been living in the United States for over 40 years. I woke up on Nov. 6, 2024 and found myself in a new country. In 2016, Donald Trump was elected as US president, but the country did not know exactly who he was and what he stood for. In 2024, the country knew exactly who he was and what he stood for, and yet he was re-elected. How did that happen? Earlier this year, I wrote an article about “US Campus Antisemitism — How Did We Get Here?”.

As one gains seniority, there is a presumption—dubious, perhaps—that one also gains wisdom. Thus, I find myself asked, not infrequently, to share some wisdom with junior researchers who seek insight that can foster success in their careers or life in general. I offer one cautionary bit of advice: “Life is not linear.” Linearity is one of the greatest success stories in mathematics.
Biden steps down as candidate in favor of Harris, reshapes place of Israel in Democratic Party. British and French elections create new perils for Jews and Israel. - Boycotts, Divestments and Sanctions (BDS), SPME BDS Monitor - SPME Scholars for Peace in
Introduction The sudden withdrawal of President Biden from the Democratic ticket amidst the continued war in Gaza has thrown US support for Israel and for American Jews into new light. The appointment of Vice President Harris as the Democratic candidate put her record and progressive wing of the party under scrutiny. This change of the guard comes the nation faces new street protests by pro-Hamas forces and pressures created by the mendacious ‘International Court of Justice’ ruling against Israel.
Antisemitism, Anti-Zionism, and Israelophobia
US campus antisemitism is much in the news these days. To understand why, we have to go back to October 7, 2023, when invading Hamas gunmen murdered, tortured, mass raped, and mutilated some 1,200 Israelis. The vast majority of the victims were unarmed women, children, infants, and the elderly. About 240 Israeli hostages, including women, elders, children, and infants were taken as hostages to Gaza.

Rice prof: Antisemitism is 'prevalent' on campus (Opinion)
At Rice University, hundreds of people joined a Students for Justice in Palestine protest on Oct. 26. "From the river to the sea" refers to eradicating Israel. Raquel Natalicchio/Staff photographer December 1 was my 30th anniversary at Rice University. At times, I have had significant disagreements with Rice’s leadership; for example, I did not hesitate to criticize Rice’s response to the COVID pandemic. Yet I have always been proud of being a faculty member at Rice University.
A Moral Rot at Rice University
December 1, 2023, was my 30th anniversary at Rice University. I was not always a “happy camper” at Rice. At times, I had significant disagreements with Rice’s leadership; for example, I did not hesitate to criticize Rice’s response to the COVID pandemic. Yet I have always been proud of being a faculty member at Rice University. With deep chagrin, I have to admit that I can no longer say that. My first inkling of a problem brewing at Rice was in the fall of 2022.
From Moral Rot to the Rule of Lawlessness on a US Campus
The commencement ceremony in US universities is the highlight of the academic year. It marks the end of the academic year, but, more significantly, it marks the start of educated life for the students who are graduating with academic degrees. It is a very formal event, with regalia, music, marches, and speeches full of life wisdom. This year would have been my 30th commencement event at Rice University, and I have decided to skip it.
Universities should support the public good
