Celebrating the Fourth of July in Utah? Here’s where all the parades, fireworks and festivals are.
All across Utah, in cities and small towns, this year’s Fourth of July is promising to be a big party. Many celebrations are falling under the banner of America250, the congressionally approved coast-to-coast effort to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Nate Boyer | Blindsided Podcast
On this episode of Blindsided we welcome Nate Boyer. Nate is a former long snapper for the University of Texas Longhorns, but he’s unlike any other football player you’ve ever met. Nate volunteered as a relief worker in Sudan, then enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in both Iraq and Afghanistan as a Green Beret. And that’s all before he started playing football. People celebrate him, but he’s always felt undeserving of the accolades. While people saw a hero, he saw a man with wounds.
A Letter to My Present Self | By Nate Boyer Original
Dear Nate, Happy Veterans Day. It’s taken far too long to be able to tell yourself that. To allow yourself to appreciate the sentiment. To give yourself permission to love yourself and to let others love you as well. Ever since you were a kid you felt guilty for being loved. You’d ask yourself…. “What did I ever do to earn it?” What about those that have nothing? No family, no food, no home, nothing? They need love, they deserve love.

(Todd Kirkland/AP) FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The U.S. Navy is investigating an incident in which dogs attacked a “Colin Kaepernick stand-in” during a K-9 demonstration during a 2019 fundraiser at the Navy SEAL Museum in Florida.
Nate Boyer: Let’s finish strong, America
DISCLAIMER: I only speak for myself, not the military, not the veteran community, and not the Army Special Forces. “I have great respect for the men and women that fought for this country,” and these are simply my opinions and feelings, based on my values and experiences. However, feel free to virtually crucify me — as if you needed my permission.

How Chris Long inspired me to battle Tanzania's water crisis
Former Seattle Seahawks player Nate Boyer and Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Chris Long led a group of former and current NFL players to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in February to bring attention to the current water crisis in Tanzania. Their journey was captured in the two-hour documentary "The Way Up -- Chris Long & The Waterboys," which premieres Friday, Dec. 28, at 8 p.m. ET on NFL Network. On Aug.
Colin Kaepernick, the national anthem and America: How military service influenced my views on patriotism and protest
“Patriotism: devotion to and vigorous support for one's country.” — Oxford Dictionary What it means to be patriotic in America isn’t simple to define anymore. Growing up, I always just thought patriotism meant dressing in red, white and blue, shooting off fireworks and eating hot dogs. I never gave much thought to the meaning of the word beyond the sights and sounds of the Fourth of July. To me, patriotism only took place on specific days and at specific times.
NFL players union files grievance over anthem policy
“We’re here for a bigger platform,” Raiders tight end Jared Cook said during the spring. “We’re not just athletes. We’re people that live this. It’s people in our neighborhood, it’s people that we grew up with, it’s people that we know who are actually living through these circumstances. So when we speak on it, it’s not like we’re just speaking out of the side of our neck. It’s things that actually touch home and things that we can actually relate to.
The NFL just took this stand on players who kneel during the national anthem
“We want people to be respectful of the national anthem. We want people to stand,” Goodell said. “That’s all personnel, and to make sure they treat this moment in a respectful fashion. That’s something that we think we owe. We’ve been very sensitive on making sure that we give players choices, but we do believe that moment is an important moment and one that we are going to focus on.”
Nate Boyer: From Kaepernick to Kilimanjaro
Yes, I was frustrated that Colin didn’t vote. Yes, I want him to stand again for the anthem, and I still hope that day will come where we can stand together. But if the main reason NFL ratings are down is kneeling during the anthem, not something like players in the league physically abusing women, then we still have got a long way to go, America.
Veterans group creates PSA to follow rejected Super Bowl ad
“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now,‘” Trump said during a September rally in Alabama. "You know some owner is going to do that. He's going to say, 'That guy that disrespects our flag, he's fired.' And that owner, they don't know it, [but] they'll be the most popular person in this country."

Vince McMahon: ‘Appropriate’ for players in new XFL to stand for anthem
“As far as our league is concerned, our league will have nothing to do with politics,” he said when asked about whether President Trump, a former WWE performer and onetime owner of the New Jersey Generals in the defunct United States Football League, would endorse the project.
AMVETS says NFL censored its ad against flag protests
They noted that the program will include a similar ad from the Veterans of Foreign Wars that states simply “We Stand for Veterans.” McCarthy said AMVETS was asked to consider changing their ad to read “Please Stand for Our Veterans” but did not reply in time for production deadlines.
AMVETS says NFL censored its ad against flag protests
Numerous veterans groups have criticized the flag protests before football games as “disrespectful” to current and former military members, although players involved in the actions have repeatedly said they are not related to servicemembers in any way.

Here's his letter, as told to ESPN San Francisco 49ers reporter Nick Wagoner. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." -- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dear Every Single American, Every. Single. American.

Nate Boyer on the flag, football, race ... and how it felt to hear the national anthem on an NFL sideline
Green Beret, former Seahawk Nate Boyer on standing by Colin Kaepernick
I’m a former Green Beret and a former NFL player, and last year I decided to stand by then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick as he took a knee during the national anthem. He was kneeling to protest police brutality. Kaepernick’s stance kicked up strong emotions across the nation. It kicked up strong feelings in me: I didn't agree with the reasons for Kaepernick's protest, but I certainly respected his right to do it.

Honoring fallen on Memorial Day means honoring right to protest
As an ex-Green Beret, I stood by Kaepernick and my country. This holiday, let's all take a knee. Editor’s Note: We’ve asked a few select athletes who we’ve featured on Purpose2Play to write about who inspires them. Up next is Nate Boyer, a former active-duty Green Beret and former member of the Seattle Seahawks. Boyer never played a down of football in his life until he walked-on at the University of Texas as a longsnapper. Our feature story on him was published in November of 2015. Without further ado, here’s Nate Boyer. Where I come from, heroes don’t walk the earth.
Nate Boyer: From Kaepernick to Kilimanjaro
It’s been a weird year for me … a really, really weird year. I feel like the Colin Kaepernick saga has overshadowed everything else I’ve tried to do. It’s not a complaint as much as a conundrum: I knew I would catch a lot of flak for sitting down with Colin, listening to him, and then standing next to him with my hand on my heart while he knelt for the national anthem. But I did it because I believe that if we all want things to change for the better, it starts with humility.
How Nate Boyer got Colin Kaepernick to kneel rather than sit
By being open to Colin Kaepernick’s thoughts on his national anthem protest, Nate Boyer Nate Boyer was willing to listen to Colin Kaepernick’s side of the 49ers quarterback’s civil rights protest. That seems to have sat well with Kaepernick.
An Opern Letter to Colin Kaepernick
• Colin: I’m a big fan. I’ve been pulling for you ever since I first saw you play in the 2012 preseason. I was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and have been a die-hard 49ers fan as long as I can remember — growing up, I was Joe Montana for Halloween two years straight. • I proudly wore the red and gold for an afternoon when I had a tryout with the 49ers last spring. I ultimately ended up in training camp with the Seattle Seahawks, but I’ll never forget the one day I got to be a 49er.

Conquering Mount Kilimanjaro
Sometimes in life you just have to make a decision and commit to it. It’s that simple. The more you try to question things, or wonder if you’re capable enough, or good enough, or smart enough, the quicker you start to talk yourself out of that decision. The day after I was released from the Seattle Seahawks, I received a phone call from Chris Long–former Defensive End with the Rams and now with the Patriots–about an initiative called, Waterboys.
Nate Boyer, Seahawks rookie, explains why Shia LaBeouf video was right
When Peter King asked me to guest-write the MMQB column during July 4 week, I was honored. That was immediately followed by worry, then panic. What was I going to say? My story has already been told by many accomplished sportswriters. What could I possibly add? And then I thought about Shia LaBeouf. “DO IT! Just DO IT! Don’t let your dreams be dreams.
