Review of 'For All Mankind' Season 5

For All Mankind came back on Apple TV with the debut first episode of its 5th Season at the end of March As has been usual with the more recent seasons, my favorite part of this season was the alternate history set up which we see at the beginning of this first episode. As a reminder, the alternate history split in this series hinges on the Soviet Union beating us to the Moon back in the late 1960s.

Review of 'Star City' 1.1-1.2

Just watched the first two episodes of Star City on Apple TV. I think it's a powerful, exciting, politically potent narrative so far, and looks to be a worthy successor to For All Mankind. Let's talk a little about the politics first. The Soviet Union in the 1960s was one of the two most powerful states in the world. Unlike the United States, it was a fascist state.

Review of 'On the Calculation of Volume' (Books 1-4)

Time loop stories -- about a recurrent, involuntary, often daily trip to the past -- have been well represented in movies like Groundhog Day, Source Code, and Palm Springs. This subset of time travel in science fiction and fantasy has been less represented in novels, which would make Solvej Balle's seven-volume On the Calculation of Volume series (!) welcome in any case. But it has additional treats for the mind. My friend Dirk Vom Lehn told me about this series last month.
