Inflammation as a therapeutic target to improve kidney and cardiovascular outcomes
Abstract Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a leading cause of premature death due to the loss of kidney function and development of kidney failure, and because of attendant major adverse cardiovascular events. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), a biomarker of systemic inflammation, is associated with increased risks of cardiovascular events and CKD progression.
Leave no one behind: optimizing kidney protection in type 1 diabetes
Despite unprecedented advances in the treatment of non-diabetic chronic kidney disease (CKD) and CKD in type 2 diabetes mellitus in the past decade, no new drugs have been approved for CKD in type 1 diabetes mellitus. Urgent action is needed to develop new therapies and improve outcomes for this population.
Corrigendum to “Association between interleukin-6, suPAR, and hsCRP with subclinical left ventricular dysfunction in type 1 diabetes: The Thousand & 1 study” [Diabetes Res. Clin. Pract. 222 (2025) 112071]
The authors regret the following errors. In the Abstract Original Combining biomarkers showed stronger associations: elevated IL-6 and suPAR 1.3 (0.7–2.0, P < 0.001), elevated all three 1.9 (1.1–2.7, P < 0.001). Results were similar for decreased GLS with IL-6–0.4 (0.7 to 0.0, P = 0.039), IL-6 and hsCRP 1.0 (1.7 to 0.4, P = 0.007), all three 1.1 (2.0 to 0.3, P = 0.009).

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation has no anti-inflammatory effect in diabetes - Scientific Reports
Abstract Chronic inflammation is associated with diabetes and contributes to the development and progression of micro- and macrovascular complications. Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) has been proposed to reduce levels of circulating inflammatory cytokines in non-diabetics by activating the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. We investigated the anti-inflammatory potential of tVNS as a secondary endpoint of a randomized controlled trial in people with diabetes (NCT04143269).

Preconception Antidiabetic Drugs in Men and Birth Defects in Offspring
TO THE EDITOR: Wensink and colleagues' article (1) describes an excess of birth defects in neonates fathered by men who received metformin during the 3-month period of spermatogenesis before conception (known as sperm development). This is an important contribution. Nevertheless, we would place its findings into a broader clinical context. Hyperglycemia, older age, and obesity are known risk factors for fetal malformations or other outcomes (2–4).
