Řecké mýty
V této knize naleznete všechny řecké mýty i různé variace na ně. Ke každé kapitole náleží výkladový komentář. Kniha vychází z četných příruček o řeckých mýtech z devatenáctého a dvacátého století. More Byzantine Events: Count Belisarius by Robert Graves
Count Belisarius by Robert Graves published 1938 So I did a post on a book called You with the Roses by James Wellard, about the life of the byzantine empress Theodora. In the comments, stalwart blogfriend Roger Allen mentioned that Theodora’s sister Antonina had married a legendary general, Belisarius, and that Robert Graves had written a historical novel about him – and another blogfriend, Lucy Fisher, mentioned this book too.
Historical Novels Set During the Classical Era
Glorious Exploits, your Nero Book Award-shortlisted debut novel, is set in ancient Sicily during the Peloponnesian War. What drew you to historical fiction, and to the Classical era specifically? I’ve always been fascinated by ancient Greece and ancient Rome, particularly ancient Greece: the myths, the drama, the history.
PseudoPod 958: The Shout
Captain Robert von Ranke Graves was an English poet, soldier, historical novelist and critic. His father was Alfred Graves, a celebrated Irish poet and figure in the Gaelic revival; they were both Celticists and students of Irish mythology. Robert Graves produced more than 140 works in his lifetime: his poems, translations and innovative analysis of the Greek myths have never been out of print. He was also a renowned short story writer, with stories such as “The Tenement” still being popular today.
Classic Historical Fiction Set in Ancient Rome
Amidst the buildings that survive—like the Colosseum where gladiators fought to the death and the villas and shops of Pompeii—ancient Rome can seem both tantalizingly close and very far away. Nor are its remnants purely visual: We also have access to the work of Roman poets and historians, and the correspondence and extensive writings of Cicero, a senator as Rome changed from republic to empire. This makes for novels about the period that are often rich in historical detail and a lot of fun.
US journalist gives tips on how to discover the Jewel of the Mediterranean
The first rule for visitors to this jewel of an island in the Mediterranean is; You are never lost. So long as you don’t leave its shores, you know you’re “somewhere in Mallorca.” With that as the prevailing wisdom to infuse the traveler with confidence, the island, largest of the four Balearics, becomes an amazing tapestry of movement and sounds, culture and history, music and food, all to be savored in a seemingly endless venturing into redefining exotic travel at the much-admired Spanish pace.
The God Called Poetry
Now I begin to know at last, These nights when I sit down to rhyme, The form and measure of that vast God we call Poetry, he who stoops And leaps me through his paper hoops A little higher every time. Tempts me to think I’ll grow a proper Singing cricket or grass-hopper Making prodigious jumps in air While shaken crowds about me stare Aghast, and I sing, growing bolder To fly up on my master’s shoulder Rustling the thick stands of his hair.

Five Best: Books on World War I
Summary Selected by Michael Korda, the author, most recently, of ‘Muse of Fire: World War I as Seen Through the Lives of the Soldier Poets.’ By Frederic Manning (1930) 1. All wars end in a war of words, as those who have survived on both sides tell their story. World War I is no exception. Books are still being written about it, more than a century after its end.

A Valentine by Robert Graves
The hunter to the husbandman Pays tribute since our love began, And to love-loyalty dedicates The phantom kills he meditates. Let me embrace, embracing you, Beauty of other shape and hue, Odd glinting graces of which none Shone more than candle to your sun, Your well-kissed hand was beckoning me In unfamiliar imagery— Smile your forgiveness; each bright ghost Dives in love’s glory and is lost, Yielding your comprehensive pride A homage, even to suicide. Robert Graves.

Catherine Evans on reading, writing, and the making of her second novel
Catherine Evans was born in South Africa, and grew up in Swaziland and Malawi. The author of The Wrong’un, she has made her return to the writing world with All Grown Up, a novel that examines the early sexualisation of young girls and toxic masculinity amongst boys, confronting the reader with important questions about consent and underage sex. Why do some young girls become sexually active early? If a man has sex with a girl who lies about her age, is he still culpable?
Sergeant-Major Money
It wasn't our battalion, but we lay alongside it, So the story is as true as the telling is frank. They hadn't one Line-officer left, after Arras, Except a batty major and the Colonel, who drank. 'B' Company Commander was fresh from the Depot, An expert on gas drill, otherwise a dud; So Sergeant-Major Money carried on, as instructed, And that's where the swaddies began to sweat blood.
Books by Robert Graves
Robert Graves (1895-1985) was a British poet, translator and historical novelist. His memoir, Goodbye to All That, is highly readable and especially memorable for his description of life in the trenches during World War I, where he served as an officer in the British Army. His historical novels are amongst the best ever written, combining knowledge of history and the primary sources (some of which he translated into English) with beautiful writing and a sense of humour. “I, Claudius is dazzling.

What I'm Reading - Feb 2023
By the way, I’ve been mostly vegetarian for several years, but I’ve been feeling to eat more fish lately, and it turns out that my friend Tom Gore has a salmon fishing business and sells direct! So, if you like salmon, consider getting it from Tom’s Wild Alaskan! He's a good friend, great guy, great fish—and, he also happens to be a reader and supporter. Thanks Tom! A few things I’m reading, listening to, watching, using and learning this month.

William Atkinson: Jesus before Pentecost
| November 30, 2018 | no comments William P. Atkinson, Jesus before Pentecost (Eugene, OR: Cascade Books, 2016), 222 pages. Unapologetically Pentecostal, Atkinson, an ordained minister, presents Jesus through the eyes of a Pentecostal believer as well as through the eyes of a scholar (Edinburgh)—that is, as a theological historian he views Jesus in the “then and there,” while as a Pentecostal, he views Jesus in the “here and now” (1).

The best books that capture the tragedy and comedy of war
I haven’t recommended The Iliad because it’s the oldest war story (perhaps the oldest work of literature still widely read), but because of the immediacy with which it still speaks of fear, rage, lust, and honour; all drivers of conflicts today as much as they were in our deep past. The first time I read the verses of vivid, muscular language that Alexander Pope claimed "pour along like a fire that sweeps the whole Earth before it," they reached out across the ages and gripped me by the hilt.

Ammonia emissions and animal agriculture
Abstract Nitrogen is found in relatively high levels in all excreted animal manures. It can exist in many chemical forms and can move easily in the environment as a gas in air, a dissolved constituent of ground or surface water, or in combination with other materials. Nitrogen in the form of ammonia (NH3) is of particular concern because of its potential to create odors and negatively impact air and water quality and animal and human health.
Rising anti-Semitism requires communal security response

(File photo) By Robert Graves Special to WJW In my 22 years as a special agent of the FBI, I encountered many kinds of hate and violence. None is more pernicious or more persistent than the vilification of people based on their ethnicity or faith, particularly when that hatred is used to justify violence.

The Naked And The Nude by Robert Graves
For me, the naked and the nude (By lexicographers construed As synonyms that should express The same deficiency of dress Or shelter) stand as wide apart As love from lies, or truth from art. Lovers without reproach will gaze On bodies naked and ablaze; The Hippocratic eye will see In nakedness, anatomy; And naked shines the Goddess when She mounts her lion among men. The nude are bold, the nude are sly To hold each treasonable eye.
50 Must-Read Classical Mythology Retellings
While compiling this list of 50 classical mythology retellings, I found a link connecting many of the modern retellings– a link that will be obvious if you’ve read Margaret Atwood’s Penelopiad or Madeline Miller’s Circe: “At the very dawn of religion, God was a woman. Do you remember?” from Merlin Stone’s When God Was a Woman. Modern women are retelling classic tales through the voices of the women who have been lost through translation and misogyny.

The Best Books on Greek Myths
What is a Greek myth? What is it about Greek myths that has attracted us to them down the ages? A Greek myth is basically a way of explaining the world, or it was a way of explaining the world to a primitive people who didn’t have any explanation of the sun or the moon or the disasters that happened — like earthquakes and floods and fire. It was easy to make a myth about it, and to say that it was down to the gods.
A Reader's Guide to Renowned Writer and Poet, Robert Graves
Robert Graves’s bibliography encompassed a host of literary forms; as a writer and translator, he brought a particular sensibility to explorations of history, mythology, and the nature of writing itself. In a review of his The Complete Poems from 2003, Anthony Thwaites notes that Graves “didn’t fit into any category” as a poet; the same could be said for his literary career as a whole.

Laura Riding Jackson
Laura Riding, later known as Laura (Riding) Jackson, “was still in her thirties when she published her 477-page Collected Poems in 1938,” reported Paul Auster in the New York Review of Books. “At an age when most poets are just beginning to come into their own,” he continued, “she had already reached maturity.” Riding’s oeuvre included volumes of poetry, collections of critical essays and short fiction, novels, and the founding of her own small publishing firm, Seizin Press.
The Naked and the Nude
Recently, I attended a creative arts therapy conference as a keynote speaker in Melbourne, Australia. The tile of my talk was: ‘Squaring the Circle: Reflections on the Search for Integration within a World of Refugees.’ As is my wont, I prepared a Powerpoint presentation, using multiple images to illustrate my central thesis that the search for meaning can be understood and enhanced by embracing contradictory aspects within the self and between the self and the world.
