This time, Maria McBride didn’t let the trophy slip from her grasp. The long-hitting Swede overcame a couple of front-nine hiccups and held off a determined challenge from countrywoman Annika Sorenstam to win the 8th U.S. Senior Women’s Open on Sunday at Barton Hills Country Club. Last year at San Diego Country Club, McBride was tied for the lead going into the final round and stumbled home with a 78 to finish T-4, eight strokes behind winner Becky Morgan.

Sorenstam, Webb Chase Redman in U.S. Senior Women’s Open

And the 8th U.S. Senior Women’s Open is providing the perfect platform for two old foes to renew their rivalry as Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb try to chase down leader Michele Redman in the last threesome of Saturday’s third round at Barton Hills Country Club.

Part of the fun of the U.S. Senior Women’s Open is the abundance of familiar faces wandering around. In the player’s parking lot, Juli Inkster, Hollis Stacy and Karrie Webb have spots next to each other. That’s 13 USGA championships combined among them. And there’s three-time U.S. Women’s Open champion Annika Sorenstam and fellow Swede Helen Alfredsson, who won the Senior Open in 2019.
