Children Living With Sickle Cell Can Be Treated Safely Using Hydroxyurea
New research shows the efficacy and safety of hydroxyurea treatment for sickle cell anemia, in four low-income sites in Africa, with no increase in clinically diagnosed infections. Hydroxyurea is a drug taken once daily by mouth that works to reduce the complications of sickle cell anemia by encouraging the body to produce more fetal hemoglobin, the form of hemoglobin normally made by babies in the womb, that stops red blood cells from sickling.
10-Year Study Affirms Life-Changing Benefits of Hydroxyurea for Sickle Cell Anemia
Fewer serious complications. Fewer hospitalizations and blood transfusions. Better growth and development. And a markedly lower risk of death from the complications of sickle cell anemia. These are the benefits documented from 10 years of continuous hydroxyurea treatment provided in the NOHARM trial to a group of young children in Uganda, which has one of the world’s largest number of people living with the painful disorder known for causing sickle-shaped red blood cells.
Ten Years of Hydroxyurea for Ugandan Children with Sickle Cell Anemia
To the Editor: Sickle cell anemia is a severe inherited hemoglobinopathy with a large global burden, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.1 Hydroxyurea, which is standard therapy for sickle cell anemia in high-resource settings, has had encouraging short-term results in low-resource settings.2,3 However, long-term safety and benefits remain undefined in Africa, where malnutrition, malaria, and poor health care access confound outcomes.

Microsensor Array for the Electrochemical Analysis of Hydroxyurea in Blood Samples of Children Affected by Sickle Cell Anemia
Abstract Click to copy section linkSection link copied! Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an inherited blood disorder that causes morbidity and early mortality. Hydroxyurea is an effective oral medication to treat SCA, and optimal dosing benefits from pharmacokinetic (PK)-based methods that require accurate analysis of hydroxyurea levels in timed patient blood samples.
Are You Using Too Much Mobile Data? Here's How to Cut Back Original
Using your phone usually calls for access to the internet. If you're not in a location where you can use Wi-Fi, you rely on a mobile data network to browse the web or check your social media. Mobile data, either as part of a cellular service or a pay-as-you-go plan, costs money. Unless you have an unlimited data plan, the more you use, the more you pay. It makes sense to reduce the amount of data you use if you aren't on an unlimited plan.

Hydroxyurea May Help People With HbSC Form of Sickle Cell Disease
A Phase II clinical trial conducted in Ghana suggests that hydroxyurea — already a treatment offered for the most common form of sickle cell disease — also shows benefits for those with the hemoglobin SC (HbSC) variant of the condition. In the United States, about 25% to 30% of people with sickle cell disease (SCD) have the HbSC variant. In Ghana, that figure is closer to 50%.
Globalization in clinical drug development for sickle cell disease
1 BACKGROUND Globalization of clinical trials, defined operationally as conduct in the international arena, has grown over the past few decades.
The Evolution of Cellphones: Understanding Networks and Coverage
A cellphone is any portable telephone that uses cellular network technology to make and receive calls. The name comes from the cell-like structure of these networks. There is some confusion about cellphones being classified differently from smartphones. Still technically, every mobile phone, from the latest Android handset to the simplest feature phone, is a cellphone. It's all about the technology used to transmit your calls, rather than what the handset itself can or cannot do.
Clinical Science: The Art of Moving Discovery from Bench to Bedside
Clinical research often can be a world of its own, dominated by the involvement of pharmaceutical companies, institutional review boards, federal regulations, and the challenges of overcoming ongoing distrust of the medical system to recruit study participants across the full range of human demographic variation. Moving from lab dishes and animal models to humans in need takes everything about science to a higher level.
The bold promise of gene therapy for sickle cell disease
Gene therapy for sickle cell disease has been ‘5–10 years away’ for several decades, but now it is here. Two different gene therapy techniques were recently approved by regulatory agencies in the United Kingdom,1 United States2 and European Union.3 These approvals formally mark the beginning of the gene therapy era for sickle cell disease, offering unprecedented opportunities for transformative or curative treatments to a patient population often marginalised and neglected.
Screening for haemoglobin disorders: One size may not fit all
Screening for sickle cell disease (SCD) and other haemoglobinopathies has expanded globally in recent years due to the severity of these disorders and the increased availability of accurate testing. The term SCD comprises several distinct genotypes, including homozygous HbSS; compound heterozygous conditions HbSC, HbSOArab and HbSD; and HbS with various forms of beta-thalassaemia.

Solutions To Share or Not to Share: Handling the Mediation Submission Knowing when and with whom to share information during the run-up to mediation can be the key to a successful result for all parties. In almost all cases for which mediation is planned, the principal parties provide a mediator with a mediation submission setting forth the nature of the case and including important pleadings, reports, photographs, or other relevant materials.
How to Automatically Dial Extensions on Android
Many business contacts have a phone number that includes an extension. It's not easy to remember all those extension numbers, and listening to the automated message for the list of extensions is time-consuming. Luckily, Android phones allow you to add extension numbers to a contact's phone number and automatically dial that extension when making a call. Information in this article should apply no matter which manufacturer made your Android phone: Samsung, Google, Huawei, Xiaomi, etc.
Hydroxyurea Dose Escalation for Sickle Cell Anemia in Sub-Saharan Africa
39 References Related Articles Abstract Background Hydroxyurea has proven safety, feasibility, and efficacy in children with sickle cell anemia in sub-Saharan Africa, with studies showing a reduced incidence of vaso-occlusive events and reduced mortality. Dosing standards remain undetermined, however, and whether escalation to the maximum tolerated dose confers clinical benefits that outweigh treatment-related toxic effects is unknown.

Sickle Cell Anemia Treatment Safely Lowers Disease Burden in African Children
CINCINNATI, /PRNewswire/ -- A daily hydroxyurea pill may finally bring some relief for young children living with the painful and deadly blood disease sickle cell anemia (SCA) in resource-challenged sub-Saharan Africa, where the disease is prevalent and health care availability is suboptimal. This is what a large multinational clinical trial called REACH discovered when it tested daily hydroxyurea treatment in 606 children between the ages of 1 and 10 years old.

Effective screening leads to better outcomes in sickle cell disease
The importance of newborn screening for sickle haemoglobinopathies is now recognised, and its use has been expanding worldwide in recent years. This crucial blood test, often administered shortly after birth, can accurately diagnose sickle cell disease, allowing early interventions. As more countries adopt sickle cell screening programmes, it becomes essential to have periodic data assessments to determine overall effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.

Understanding Smartphone Storage
When choosing a new phone, the amount of internal storage space is one of several key factors that influences the decision to buy one phone over another. But exactly how much of the promised 16, 32, or 64GB is actually available to use varies greatly between devices. Internal Versus External Memory When considering the memory specifications of any phone, it is important to understand the difference between internal and external (or expandable) memory.
