Extreme North American heatwaves in 1941 and 2021 drove widespread but contrasting impacts
Abstract The 2021 Western North American heatwave was among the most extreme heatwaves ever recorded. Recent work has identified one event of comparable magnitude and location in 1941. However, little is known about the impacts of the 1941 heatwave. Here we review 357 issues of 25 news publications from before, during, and after the 1941 heatwave, and we uncover widespread impacts including mortality, water shortages, crop damages, wildfires, flooding, and changes to social customs and behaviours.

Functional and Phylogenetic Implications of Canopy Mesophication in Temperate Hardwood Forests
1 Introduction Spanning much of the northern hemisphere, temperate deciduous forests are one of the largest forest biomes globally (Adams et al. 2019; Dreiss and Volin 2020). Trees within temperate deciduous forests are well adapted to varying annual precipitation and intense seasonality, but they are also increasingly exposed to elevated temperatures and altered precipitation regimes globally (Allen et al. 2015; Bréda et al. 2006; Hoffmann et al. 2011; Marchin et al. 2010).
