Natural capital is missing in infrastructure investments
While congressional leaders debate trillions of dollars of federal spending, they have a critical blind spot. Discussions about where to focus investments in infrastructure and what to build are not informed by a complete accounting of the nation’s assets, leaving out many critical services that nature provides. As a result, billions of dollars could be squandered — along with the ability to improve the well-being of our communities.

Restoring Science: The behind-the-scenes people and organizations connecting science and decision-making
The role of science in society has never been more important. Scientific perspectives are critical for understanding complex issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, access to higher education and systemic racism. The Biden administration promises to “listen to the science” and “marshal the forces of science.” But how does scientific information actually make its way from researcher to policymaker?

Policy impacts of ecosystem services knowledge
SignificanceOur study introduces a conceptual framework and empirical approach to explore how knowledge impacts decision-making. We illustrate this approach with knowledge about ecosystem services (ES), but the approach itself can be applied broadly. Our results indicate that the legitimacy of knowledge (i.e., perceived as unbiased and representative of multiple points of view) is of paramount importance for impact.
INSIGHT: Giving Science a Voice in Public Policy
Scientific research has long played a critical role in identifying and solving society’s problems. Scientists have helped forecast and prepare for acute risks from floods to wildfires, and provided vital information to guide solutions to chronic challenges ranging from stabilizing food supplies to managing finite marine fisheries. But research alone is not enough.
Evaluating the impact of ecosystem service assessments on decision-makers
Ecosystem services support human livelihoods and economies but are declining in many places. Ecosystem service assessments estimate the benefits that nature provides to people and can be used to evaluate trade-offs in impacts and changes resulting from land use decisions. Such assessments can affect the capacity of decision-makers to make sustainable land use decisions, but the actual impact of such projects on decision-maker attitudes is almost entirely unstudied.
