The background, origins and history of WCU’s 50th year old football stadium and its special first season. By Steve White Football came to Cullowhee in 1931 when what is now known as Western Carolina University was Western Carolina Teachers College. The school’s football games were played on the same field, give or take 20 to 25 yards, for 42 years with the exception of three seasons during World War II.
