Theresa Crimmins is the Director for the USA National Phenology Network and has been a part of the organization since 2007. Hailing from Ohio and Michigan, she received a B.S. and M.A at Western Michigan University and a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. And just like that, spring is behind us. The first day of summer will be here this weekend. But around the state, we are lacking some of the classic harbingers of the season, and the flowering displays have been notably muted. On the east side of Tucson where I live, we’ve had a late start to blooming among our iconic saguaro cacti. The precious few Parry’s penstemons that ventured to bloom in my yard this year did so weeks later than usual despite warm temperatures.

The Perils of Early Springtime

Winter and spring 2023 were very warm in much of the eastern United States, causing springtime biological activity to start much earlier than it had in decades. The blooming of the iconic cherry trees of the mid-Atlantic region started on March 1, weeks ahead of schedule. Saturday Night Live gave the phenomenon a nod, with an opening skit featuring early sightings of stereotypical characters who populate Central Park when the weather is nice.
