Big business has bamboozled Ohio before, but banning data centers wrong answer | Opinion Original
May 13, 2026, 4:24 a.m. ET Ohio is experiencing a rapid expansion of data centers, which is projected to double its share of the state's power grid by 2030. A citizen petition has been certified to potentially ban new large data centers, reflecting growing community concerns over energy use and rising utility bills. Tim Ryan is a former 10-term Democratic member of Congress from Ohio. Shawn Cutter is a sixth-generation Ohio farmer and an entrepreneur in the energy and tech sectors.
It's time to put people at the center of climate policy
Bill Gates dropped a truth bomb that has the potential to fundamentally reshape the climate conversation in our country. After years of aligning with the doomsday narrative that focuses exclusively on arbitrary, short-term emissions targets, he reversed course. Gates admitted what many of us in the heartland have known all along: While climate change poses serious challenges, our primary focus should be one thing — improving people’s lives.

Shawn Cutter is a sixth-generation Ohio farmer and an entrepreneur in the energy and tech sectors. This year, a wave of state laws is reshaping how America builds data centers. Ohio’s HB 15, effective in August, fast-tracks power build-out and microgrids for large loads.

Tom Holland Raves About Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’: ‘The Job of a Lifetime’
Whenever there's a film on the way that is written, directed, and produced by Christopher Nolan, such a project is likely to stop movie lovers in their collective tracks. That just so happens to be precisely the case for Nolan's upcoming film The Odyssey, a movie that features a ridiculous ensemble cast starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, along with Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, and Jon Bernthal, among several others.

Tim Ryan: It's time for the Democratic Party to be honest with the American people
This post is part of the digital companion series to Jen Psaki’s “The Blueprint,” a new podcast examining where Democrats stand after big losses in 2024 and how they can win again. Below is an adapted excerpt from the March 3 episode featuring former Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio. When I reflect on November’s election, two glaring omissions are missing from the Democratic Party’s messaging: acknowledgment and empathy.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is more than the latest buzzword. It’s rising rapidly, permeating across industries, and is already present in our daily lives. RYAN & WOLF: We're moderate capitalists and our presidential pick is simple
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles! The nation just heard competing economic speeches from Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, both with a focus on manufacturing. This is not a surprise as we believe that whoever has the better plan for the rebuilding and revitalizing of industrial America will win the election.

Ryan for Newsweek: To Avoid Danger, U.S. Must Lead on Crypto and Blockchain - Progressive Policy Institute
By Tim Ryan “Those who came before us made certain that this country rode the first waves of the industrial revolution, the first waves of modern invention, and the first wave of nuclear power, and this generation does not intend to founder in the backwash of the coming age of space. We mean to be a part of it—we mean to lead it.” That was President Kennedy more than a half-century ago.
Ryan for Newsweek: Young Voters Are Consumed by Desperation—and Nihilism. Here's How Biden Can Reach Them - Progressive Policy Institute
By Tim Ryan President Biden is touting the strength of America’s post-pandemic economic recovery, and he’s right: Wages are up, unemployment is down, and inflation is finally coming under control. But as pollsters perpetually point out, the president is not getting credit in the polls. Working-class voters—particularly young people in middle American communities like those I represented in northeast Ohio—are particularly despondent.
Ryan for Newsweek: Who Knew Biden Had It in Him? Biden Crushed the State of the Union - Progressive Policy Institute
By Tim Ryan Okay, I’ll admit it: Joe Biden surprised me last night. I didn’t expect it. These major-league speeches are judged on both style and substance, and the presumption, after months of incessant question-raising about his age, was that the President would present like the title character in Weekend at Bernie’s. But a prizefighter emerged from the door in the House chamber and gave a more electrifying State of the Union than I’ve seen in years.
Opinion | LNG Export Ban Is Atrocious Politics
It’s bad policy and a betrayal of working-class voters who are crucial to Biden’s re-election. Many climate activists are celebrating the Biden administration’s decision to curtail exports of liquefied natural gas. The policy, however, is a political misstep and not only for the reasons most critics give.
Ryan for The Wall Street Journal: LNG Export Ban Is Atrocious Politics - Progressive Policy Institute
By Tim Ryan Many climate activists are celebrating the Biden administration’s decision to curtail exports of liquefied natural gas. The policy, however, is a political misstep and not only for the reasons most critics give. For a moment, set aside the national-security implications—that limiting American exports will punish our allies around the world—and the concern that this decision may spur European and Asian countries to burn more coal.
Biden’s LNG decision will make it harder to reach our climate goals
China is orchestrating a massive investment in solar and wind power to meet its growing energy needs, installing as much renewable energy capacity as the rest of the world combined, six years ahead of schedule. However, this impressive success story masks an ugly truth: Without natural gas as a foundation, this renewable power is inextricably linked with rapidly expanding coal-burning in order to ensure grid reliability, which is creating more harm than good for our climate.
Compensation changes offer a chance to double down on core value of transparency
by Tim Ryan Jim Haisler, the CEO of the Heartland REALTOR® Organization, recently wrote about why agents should be keeping an eye on the NAR compensation lawsuits. He noted that we're already seeing changes on the ground as a result of it, which is true - MRED listings now allow sellers to offer zero commission to buyers' agents.
Hey Coach! Our Boys Need You
Many boys and men are struggling to find purpose in the modern world. The signs are everywhere: men dropping out of the workforce, checking out of school, turning away from family. The most tragic symptom of all is the high male suicide rate, which is four times higher than among women, and now rising fastest among younger men. What’s going on? I’ve been thinking a lot about this question in recent years.

Opinion: retail meat prices are a distraction from the real issues
Tim Ryan leads the industry affairs team for the Australian Meat Industry Council, which represents processors, butchers and small goods suppliers. In this contributed article he argues that putting downward pressure on retail meat prices could have unintended consequences. RECENT commentary has maintained an unproductive focus on domestic retail meat prices.
Dispatches from the Heartland: Don’t Bet Against America
Is the Democratic Party perfect? Hell, no. I’ve said that before, and I’ve got the scars to prove it. But on the issue of domestic manufacturing investments and clean energy development, we got it right—big time. Right now industries in the U.S. are booming, driving innovation, and bringing jobs back to local communities. And it’s happening because of strong pro-American policies and investments designed to boost our industrial might.

After a stronger-than-forecast performance for 2022, continued inflationary headwinds across energy, food and beverages (F&B) and payroll remain critical factors impairing the UK hotel industrys recovery. This update to the PwC Hotels Forecast 2022-2023 shows that, following a weaker than forecast Q1, performance rebounded in April 2023, especially in London.
Dispatches from the Heartland
Picture a global market worth trillions of dollars—one roughly the size of Indonesia or Saudi Arabia. Now imagine a hundred thousand workers whose jobs and livelihoods hinge on whether the United States wins this market and sparks a renewal of American manufacturing. As we transition to electric vehicles, this isn’t just a possibility—it’s a concrete, highly lucrative opportunity. We are not chasing nostalgia here.

Dispatches From the Heartland
Deploying American-made clean energy technology is not just about reaching our climate goals—it’s about reinvigorating America’s economy, creating more good-paying jobs, and securing a durable competitive edge for American industries. States like Ohio are at the forefront of this transition and hold enormous potential to build a more affordable, reliable, secure, and clean economy. But getting there will take a lot of work, particularly in rebuilding Americans’ trust in our institutions.

A Tale of 2 Committees: How outside money in AZ and OH is shaping the Senate races
This year, the spending in two Senate campaigns–Arizona and Ohio–represent a departure from the conventional architecture of statewide campaigns. Republican candidates in these races have all but abandoned traditional fundraising avenues for a deluge of outside funding dollars unleashed by the notorious Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United 12 years ago. Since that decision, budgets for big ticket campaigns have soared.
Opinion | Trump’s Guys Have Their Work Cut Out for Them
If Democrats do better than expected in next week’s elections, let’s hope they send a thank-you card to Donald Trump. Just because it’d drive him crazy. But his meddling is also a real factor: If you look at some of the most competitive races, the awfulness of the Republican nominee is thanks in good part to Trumpian support. “My record is unparalleled, my endorsements, it’s totally unparalleled,” he bragged earlier this year.
JD Vance gives Catholicism a bad name
Vance sees Catholicism in a similar fashion. The Catholic Church of his imaginings is part of a "post-liberal" America, and so it was unsurprising Vance took time off the campaign trail to speak at a conference of conservative, post-liberal nationalists at Franciscan University at Steubenville, Ohio.

Tim Ryan: 'Ohioans are at their breaking point' and need some breathing room
Growing up near Youngstown, my mom raised my brother and me working a clerical job. After school, we often walked to my grandparents’ house for a homemade meal. Everyone we knew worked hard, but there was still time for Sunday dinner with the family, church festivals, family picnics and high school football games. I’m running for Senate because Ohioans are at their breaking point — working harder than ever, putting in long hours at more than one job and still struggling to get by.
