I am a British-Nigerian-Trinidadian creative storyteller, currently based in Lagos, Nigeria. I have several years’ experience working in various parts of Northern & Sub-Saharan Africa, and Central America, as a text, video and photo journalist, editor and media trainer.

I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in French & Spanish at University College London (UCL) before moving to New York City to complete my Master’s in Journalism at Columbia University.

Scientists in biodiversity-rich countries are using digitized plant records to identify rare species, track ecological change, and inform what gets protected. In a small room in the University of Lagos’ Department of Botany in Nigeria, wooden cabinets stretch from floor to ceiling. Botanist Dr. George Nodza opens one and carefully pulls out a pile of folders filled with dried plant specimens. One contains Chloris pilosa Schumach, known in Hausa as kafar gauraka, or crane’s foot.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

At the heart of my work is a quest for compassion, truth, and a nuanced grasp of the complexities which exist around us, and in us. I believe that creative storytelling can change minds and change policies, driving awareness of pressing issues and shaping our understanding of them. My work has allowed me to delve into the distinctive issues of Africa – Nigeria in particular – to produce stories which are accurate, multi-faceted and unique to the region. I focus particularly on marginalised groups, exploring social injustices such as urban poverty, gender inequity, the human cost of the climate crisis, and police brutality. I hope that, through my work, I am able to open up opportunities for under-represented voices, encouraging them to share their lived experiences on global platforms.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

For my photojournalism work I usually use an Olympus E-M5 Mark III. I edit my image and video footage using Adobe Lightroom and Premiere Pro.

What's your favorite social network?

My favourite social network is Instagram as it allows me to display my work visually.
