Community Care Ministry helps bring food to communities in need
HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - In an effort to help more children get the food they need for the week, the Salvation Army has partnered with businesses like Target and Costco to host the Community Care Ministry. Every Tuesday night, the group visits communities in need throughout the Valley. With the help of volunteers, they set up tables filled with food, like meat and canned goods. Parents and children can visit and pick out the food they want and need.

UK police arrest man over string of stabbings in Birmingham
LONDON (AP) - British police have arrested a 27-year-old man on suspicion of murder and seven counts of attempted murder following a string of stabbings in a busy nightlife district in the central England city of Birmingham over the weekend. West Midlands Police said the suspect remains in custody after being arrested at around 4 a.m. Monday. The arrest follows a large-scale police manhunt for a male suspect in the wake of the stabbings in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Virginia COVID-19 cases rise by 645 on Monday
As of Monday, September 7, Virginia has had 127,571 total cases of COVID-19, including confirmed lab tests and clinical diagnoses, according to the Virginia Department of Health. That total reflects a 645 case increase since Sunday, out of 12,568 tests newly added to the system, which comes out to 5.1% of the newest tests coming back positive. Six additional deaths were reported on Monday, leaving the death toll at 2,684.
Pepperoni shortage is driving up price for small pizzerias
(CNN) - The pandemic has left shortages in items ranging from toilet paper to disinfectant wipes and even coins, but if you’re a pizza lover, the coronavirus-related shortage of pepperoni may be even more troubling. News outlets including USA Today report that small pizza shops said they’re seeing higher prices for the popular topping. According to Bloomberg, a South Dakota shop is paying $4.12 cents a pound for it compared to $2.87 a pound in January of 2019.
US approves oil, gas leasing plan for Alaska wildlife refuge
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The Department of the Interior on Monday approved an oil and gas leasing program within Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the sprawling home to polar bears, caribou and other wildlife. Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt signed the Record of Decision, which will determine where oil and gas leasing will take place in the refuge's coastal plain, a 1.56-million acre swath of land on Alaska's north shore with the Beaufort Sea.

Local runners come together to raise money for running store impacted by Staunton flooding
AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) - Local runners ran in the rain to raise money for Sole Focus Running in Staunton. The store was damaged in last weekend’s flooding and organizers say they’ve raised about $3,000. Some runners went to Gypsy Hill Park while others ran on their own in the virtual 5k. The event was organized by Staunton Roadrunners, a local running group. Sole Focus Running saw 37 inches of water in their store from the flooding and inventory was significantly damaged.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago’s police commissioner says more than 100 people were arrested following a night of looting and unrest that left 13 officers injured and caused damage in the city’s upscale Magnificent Mile shopping district and other parts of the city. Police Superintendent David Brown says it “was not an organized protest” but instead “an incident of pure criminality.” At one point, shots were fired at police and officers returned fire.
McDonald’s sues ousted CEO, alleging employee relationships
(AP) — McDonald’s says it’s suing Stephen Easterbrook, the CEO it ousted last year over an inappropriate relationship with an employee, alleging Monday that he covered up relationships with other employees and destroyed evidence. Easterbrook, according to a lawsuit, approved a special grant of restricted stock, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to one of those employees. The company now wants to reclaim hundreds of thousands of dollars in compensation paid to Easterbrook on his departure.
Deputies search for stolen camper
WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) - The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, after a report of a stolen camper. Deputies say the white 2021 Winnebago Micro Minnie travel trailer was stolen from the 1400 block of E Side Highway in Waynesboro on July 23, 2020. They say the suspect vehicle is a dark colored 2003-2006 Chevrolet Silverado, single cab. The truck is described as having a long bed and two wheel drive pickup.

More virus cases linked to travel from West Va. to South Carolina
CHARLESTON, W. Va. (AP) — More than two dozen coronavirus cases in a northern West Virginia county have been linked to travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, health officials said.
