Australia’s AI war machine is being built in the shadows
As debates rage on whether AI will write essays or replace workers, the Albanese government is quietly integrating the technology into our nation’s defence strategy. The second pillar of our $368 billion AUKUS program — the less visible half of Australia’s imperilled security pact with the United States and the United Kingdom — calls for the development of cutting-edge military capabilities, from AI systems to quantum technologies.

How Do I Raise Grateful Kids?
It’s Not Natural Perhaps you’ve already discovered the bad news: our kids are not naturally grateful, but are naturally born self-preoccupied ingrates brimming with an attitude of entitlement exemplified by whining, sourpuss looks, and eruptions of “Mine!” This is because they inherited hearts like that from us. From the moment they are born, they think only of themselves. Not one infant in the nursery is crying because some other baby is wet or hungry.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Mr. Lucachick conveniently forgets recent history
I shook my head when I read in the (May 14 edition of the Pioneer) about Jim Lucachick's lawsuit against the Beltrami County Board redistricting . Everyone is entitled to their day in court, and one day is all I think Mr. Lucachick and the 30 others deserve. Selective memory and poor critical thinking skills are commonplace. The lawsuit makes two main claims: gerrymandering and inadequate opportunity for public comment.

Spot on — Terrace is Frederick’s premiere tenpin lanes — but it’s also the only tenpin lanes in town. It will be subject to the wrecking ball this summer and replaced, along with the adjacent office building, by 300 housing units.
Letter: How Fargo of you?
Thursday evening, Dec. 30, my sister was locked out of her workplace near the Holiday Gas Station on 25th Street and 30th Avenue South. With only a short-sleeved shirt and pants on, she, my less than five feet tall sister, ran there in the below zero temperatures and terrible wind chill before 8 p.m. They were just locking the door. She banged on the door, yelling that she needed help and to use the phone because she had been locked out.
Letter: The Motte and Bailey fallacy
A Motte-and-Bailey was a type of medieval fortress. You would have a heavily fortified keep (the motte) and a less defended courtyard (the bailey). If under siege and the bailey’s defenses failed, people could retreat into the motte for more safety. The fallacy mirrors this. The arguer will say a very controversial statement (the bailey); when this statement it criticized, the arguer will then put forth an uncontroversial statement (the motte) to hide behind.

The Nightmare on Flight 847
Millions around the world watched their television sets or listened to their radios as the horrific drama unfolded. "He has pulled a hand-grenade pin and is ready to blow up the aircraft if he has to. We must, I repeat, we must land at Beirut. We must land at Beirut. No alternative." After much delay, the curious, grudging reply of the Beirut control tower: "Very well. Land. Land quietly. Land quietly." Then another desperate plea: "They are beating the passengers.

Decades After Tying the Knot, This Couple Finally Got to Walk Down the Aisle Together
Reminisce Extra MagazineWorld War II was in full swing when I attended high school in 1944. A special program allowed students to leave school in April—two months early—if they enlisted in a branch of the military. This sounded like a good deal, so two buddies and I joined the Marine Corps. I’d been going with my high school sweetheart, Alice, for four years by then. We knew we would marry after the war ended, so we decided to tie the knot in May 1944 before I left for duty instead.

Newly Created First Action Final Rejection Policy Adds Needless Complications to Patent Prosecution
“By permitting first action final rejections when amended claims are not ‘patentably indistinct’, the new policy requires a comparison between the pending claims and the proposed amended claims. In other words, the patentability of the proposed amended claims is judged in the context of simultaneously judging if the pending claims are prior art to the proposed amended claims.

The Mission Field I Never Expected
Trading One Vision for Another As I headed into the adult Christian life, “spending myself on behalf of the needy” was my aim, my life’s mission. As a teenager, I was inspired by the lives of missionaries past and present, men and women of faith like George Müller and Jackie Pullinger who made huge personal sacrifices for the sake of the poor and needy. I used to live on stories like Pullinger’s Chasing the Dragon (1980) and Sarah De Carvalho’s The Street Children of Brazil (1996).

Will Homeschooling Really Cause a "COVID Slide"?
National Public Radio recently reported on what is being dubbed the “COVID-19 Slide,” the theorized slump in schoolchildren’s academic performance as a result of mandated school closings. What grabbed my attention was a comment by Megan Kuhfeld, of the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA): We really wanted to know how bad this could look in terms of learning losses, especially early on, when the schools were really trying to meet basic needs—[like] providing food, providing devices.

J.R.R. Tolkien and the Necessity of Hope
The myth of “Pandora’s Box” has varied over time. Today it usually means inviting trouble by opening up something best left alone. In one version, what escapes Pandora’s Box (or “jar”) are different expressions of evil to afflict the world. In another version, it is the gods’ gifts to men that are lost. In all of those accounts, however, one item remains in Pandora’s Box: Hope (ἐλπὶς, elpis). Whether in an ethical, a theological or a political context, the meaning of hope is often ambiguous.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: We don’t owe our lives to make a strong economy
Letters Written By: William Smith, Bemidji | Apr 11th 2020 - 6am. Mark Thorson's April 1 letter to the editor wasn't an April Fool's prank, but it could have been. Pranks are unexpected, and his assertion that the primary job of political leaders is not to protect the public is unexpected. I doubt many would agree with him, but maybe that’s just me.

6 Ways to Bring Light to Heated Talks with Teenagers
Every parents I’ve met has felt frustrated by repeatedly stumbling into difficult conversations with their teenage children.
