Impacts of power plant emissions on air quality amplified by renewable energy droughts
|
Abstract Renewable energy droughts, characterized by prolonged periods of low winds and reduced solar irradiance, threaten the stability of electricity supply, with fossil fuel plants expected to cover much of the energy deficit. By integrating an electricity system model with a chemical transport model, here we quantify the effects of fossil fuel plant emissions on China’s air quality in the 2050s during renewable energy droughts.

Metabolism-Based Biomarkers for Rapid Phenotypic Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing
1 Introduction Since their discovery, antibiotics have played a fundamental role in treating bacterial infections, saving millions of lives worldwide. However, the misuse and overuse of these drugs have led to the rapid emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which is now a growing global concern [1]. The epidemiological projections indicated that AMR could cause up to 10 million deaths per year by 2050 and result in a 2%–3.5% decline in global gross domestic product [2].
Integrated planning of net-zero power systems for all
Abstract Achieving global net-zero power systems by mid-century demands integrated frameworks addressing climate mitigation and energy access equity. Here we present a spatio-temporally resolved global power system model (0.25° × 0.25°, 8,760 hours) co-optimizing capacity expansion and operational strategies.

Caught in the middle: depressive symptoms and life satisfaction of the sandwich generation in four-generation lineages in China
Abstract This study examines the implications of intergenerational caregiving for depressive symptoms and life satisfaction among China’s “sandwich generation” individuals embedded in four-generation lineages. Using data from 9081 respondents aged 45–80 from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), we measure depressive symptoms with the CES-D-10 scale and life satisfaction through a direct self-report question.
Gallium in liquid state shows nuclease-mimicking activity
Abstract Replicating biological systems using non-living materials, from the foundational molecular level to complex tissue structures, is central to abiotic mimicry. Enzymes play a vital role in these systems; however, replicating their enzymatic power with minimal components remains a key challenge. Here we show that gallium in the liquid state exhibits nuclease-like activity with preferred cleaving sites.
Dual-Mechanism Enhanced Basalt Fiber/Polyphenylene Oxide (BF/PPO) Composites: Integrating Chemical Bonding and Mechanical Interlocking Through PPO-MAH/CNTs Hybrid Sizing

Cation-π interaction is a robust type of non-covalent bonding that holds significant biological relevance in living organisms.
Silicate chemical weathering disrupts the global patterns of phosphorus limitation - Nature Communications
Abstract Global change is accelerating the chemical weathering of silicate rocks and the associated phosphorus release. However, the effects of phosphorus release on the global patterns of plant phosphorus limitation remain unclear. Here, we show that approximately 47% of the exposed areas in global silicate rocks are subject to phosphorus limitation of vegetation growth, as estimated using the ratio of leaf nitrogen to phosphorus resorption efficiency.

Modular construction of α- or β-stereogenic organosilanes and organogermanes via enantioselective alkene hydroalkylation - Nature Synthesis
Abstract Transition-metal-catalysed asymmetric C(sp3)–C(sp3) bond-forming reactions relying on directing groups or π-conjugated systems as auxiliaries have achieved tremendous success. In contrast, non-conjugated silyl groups inherently lack these auxiliary properties, rendering their application in enantioselective C(sp3)–C(sp3) coupling particularly challenging.
Diastereodivergent synthesis of multi-substituted cycloalkanes - Nature Chemistry
Abstract The escape from flat aromatic architectures towards saturated structures enriched with an increased proportion of sp3 atoms (Fsp3) has been harnessed as a drug design strategy. Chemical synthesis of drug-like saturated cycloalkanes, particularly in terms of the precise control of substituents either on the same or opposing faces of the ring plane, poses greater complexities than the assembly of their two-dimensional aromatic analogues.
Unveiling deployable rooftop solar potential across Chinese cities - Nature Cities
Abstract Rooftop solar photovoltaics (RPV) are vital for sustainably powering cities. However, most existing studies focus on RPV’s technical or economic potential often overlook real-world electricity consumption and regulatory constraints that shape actual deployment. Here we assess the deployable potential of RPV across 367 Chinese cities by incorporating variations in building types, regional characteristics and policy limitations.
Synergistic gas–slag scheme to mitigate CO2 emissions from the steel industry - Nature Sustainability
Abstract Improving the sustainability of the steel industry requires decarbonization strategies that are both technically and economically viable. The recovery of both material and heat on site is a promising approach but largely unexplored. Here we propose a scheme integrating heat recovery, carbon mineralization and the use of slag in cement production, along with the blast-furnace injection of hydrogen from off-gas.

Number of bits returned by a quantum estimation
We give two upper bounds to the mutual information in arbitrary quantum estimation strategies. The first is based on some simple Fourier properties of the estimation apparatus. The second is derived using the first, but, interestingly, depends only on the Fisher information of the parameter, so it is valid even beyond quantum estimation. We illustrate the usefulness of these bounds by characterizing the quantum phase estimation algorithm in the presence of noise.
Epigenetic insights into GABAergic development in Dravet Syndrome iPSC and therapeutic implications
Next, to gain a deeper understanding of chromatin dynamics during GABAergic development associated with DS, the same strategy was used as above for differentiation and ATAC-Seq analysis of iPSC-lines derived from the three DS patients (Figure 2A, Figure 2—figure supplement 1). Unfortunately, one of the DS-iPSC lines (DD4A) did not differentiate up to D65 for unknown reasons why data at the specific time-point are based on two DS-iPSC lines.
