Nobel-prizewinning breakthroughs can emerge from neglected organisms
CORRESPONDENCE 20 October 2026 The work behind this year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine began not with a medical question, but with curiosity about how single-celled algae sense and move towards light. The discovery of channelrhodopsin proteins in algae ultimately led to the development of optogenetics, transforming neuroscience and opening up new avenues for understanding the brain (see Nature 658, 586–588; 2026).
X-ray imaging based on fluorescence spherical waves
X-ray microscopy (XRM) is an important noninvasive technique for 3D visualization of internal structures. However, achieving a large field of view, high resolution, and low-dose imaging simultaneously remains challenging. This study proposes a lensless full-field phase-contrast imaging method termed synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence spherical-wave imaging (SR-XFSFI).
Single-cell atlas of urethral stricture reveals fibroblast, mast cell, and macrophage heterogeneity with candidate regulators
Abstract Background: Urethral strictures are characterized by fibrotic scar tissue formation in the urethra, leading to difficulties in urination and potential renal dysfunction. The cellular microenvironment contributes to stenosis. However, the heterogeneity of key cell types hinders our understanding of this disease. Methods: Single-cell RNA sequencing was performed on three urethral scar tissues and three normal urethral tissues.

Treatment of congenital toxoplasmosis with pyrimethamine combined with sulfadiazine in a Chinese neonate: a case report
Abstract This work reports a case of neonatal congenital toxoplasmosis in which the standard regimen of pyrimethamine combined with sulfadiazine was administered under conditions of limited drug accessibility in China, with multidisciplinary collaboration and long-term follow-up. The infant was a male born at 36⁺⁶ weeks of gestation. Postnatal serological screening and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) next-generation sequencing (NGS) confirmed the diagnosis of mildly symptomatic congenital toxoplasmosis.

Transcriptomic analysis of wild Cannabis sativa: insights into tissue- and stage-specific expression and secondary metabolic regulation - BMC Genomics
All plant samples used in this study were collected from wild-growing C. sativa populations located in the Kyirong Gully region of the southern Himalayas (Tibet, China), a biodiversity hotspot and ecological gene reservoir. These wild accessions share the same genetic background as the female wild-type individual “JL” previously used for genome sequencing and reference assembly (Gao et al., 2020, Hortic. Res.).

CLCluster: a redundancy-reduction contrastive learning-based clustering method of cancer subtype based on multi-omics data
Abstract Alternative splicing (AS) enables the regulated generation of multiple mRNA and protein products from a single gene. Cancer cells have general, cancer type-specific, and subtype-specific alterations in the splicing process that can have predictive value and contribute to cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. Currently, multi-omics data have been used to identify the molecular subtype of cancer. However, alternative splicing is rarely used to identify the cancer subtypes.

Metabolism of Inulin via Difructose Anhydride I Pathway in Microbacterium flavum Original
Difructose anhydride I (DFA-I) can be produced from inulin, with DFA-I-forming inulin fructotransferase (IFTase-I). However, the metabolism of inulin through DFA-I remains unclear. To clarify this pathway, several genes of enzymes related to this pathway in the genome of Microbacterium flavum DSM 18909 were synthesized, and the corresponding enzymes were encoded, purified, and investigated in vitro.

Analyzing the suitability of a baffled orbitally shaken bioreactor for cells cultivation using the CFD approach
Orbitally shaken bioreactors (OSRs) is one of important bioreactors for mammalian cells cultivation in suspension, especially for the screening of valuable microorganisms and in basic bioprocess development experiments. However, the suitability of OSRs for cells culture in large scale is still under development. In this article, a new kind of OSRs with baffle structure was proposed and a three‐dimensional CFD model was established to analyze the influence of baffle structure on the flow field.
Characterizing the Fluid Dynamics of the Inverted Frusto-conical Shaking Bioreactor
We conducted a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation to calculate the flow field in the Inverted Frusto-conical Shaking Bioreactor with 5 L working volume (IFSB-5L). The CFD models were established for the IFSB-5L at different operating conditions (different shaking speeds and filling volumes) and validated by comparison of the liquid height distribution in the agitated IFSB-5L.
