Recurrent oncogenic ZC3H18 mutations stabilize endogenous retroviral RNA
Abstract Endogenous retroviral (ERV) RNA is highly expressed in cancer, although the molecular causes and consequences remain unknown. We found that ZC3H18 (Z18), a component of multiple nuclear RNA surveillance complexes, has recurrent truncating mutations in cancer. We show that Z18trunc mutations are oncogenic and that Z18 plays an evolutionarily conserved role in nuclear RNA surveillance of ERV RNA. In zebrafish, Z18trunc expedited melanoma onset and promoted a specific accumulation of ERV RNA.

Zebrafish Drug Screening Identifies Erlotinib as an Inhibitor of Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling and Self-Renewal in T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Abstract The significance of the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway in cancer initiation, progression, and stem cell biology underscores its therapeutic potential, yet the clinical application of Wnt inhibitors remains limited due to challenges posed by off-target effects and complex crosstalk with other pathways. In this study, we leveraged the zebrafish model to perform a robust and rapid drug screening of 773 FDA-approved compounds to identify Wnt/beta-catenin inhibitors with minimal toxicity.
Exploring staff’s views on the implementation of intergenerational playgroups in care homes
Background Intergenerational playgroups are a formalised way of bringing together older people and young children to ‘play and interact’. They can facilitate social interaction and reduce loneliness for older people living in care homes. Although interest in intergenerational playgroups is increasing, there is a lack of research into their implementation. Aim To explore staff’s views on the implementation of intergenerational playgroups in care homes for older people.

Examining young adults daily perspectives on usage of anxiety apps: A user study
Loading metrics Open Access Peer-reviewed Research Article Abstract The growing number of mental health smartphone applications has led to increased interest in how these tools might support users in different models of care. However, research on the use of these interventions in real-world settings has been scarce. It is important to understand how apps are used in a deployment setting, especially among populations where such tools might add value to current models of care.
'Nursing education needs to acknowledge the impact of race and racism'
Black, Asian and minority ethnic nurses account for more than 20% of all NHS nurses, yet there is a woeful lack of diverse representation in more senior NHS positions (Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) Implementation team, 2020; Kline, 2019, Kline 2014). The effects of structural racism and inequality on Black, Asian and minority ethnic nurses are pervasive and significant, and impact every level of the profession (Brathwaite, 2018).

Brooke Wrubel ’21 examines donations from Edward Perry Warren in independent study – The Bowdoin Orient
Despite having donating over 500 pieces to Bowdoin’s collection, Edward Perry Warren’s name was not known by most students—that is, until Brooke Wrubel ’21 decided to delve deeper into the career of the prolific American antiquities collector.
Ursus Verses sings together despite the distance – The Bowdoin Orient
With only first years, transfer students and a select few upperclass students on campus this semester, maintaining club connections requires extra creativity in the virtual sphere. Ursus Verses, one of Bowdoin’s coed a cappella groups, is working to overcome the challenges of remote learning and to cultivate a supportive musical environment despite the distance.
Evaluation of a novel intervention to reduce burnout in doctors-in-training using self-care and digital wellbeing strategies: a mixed-methods pilot
Abstract Background Burnout for doctors-in-training is increasingly cause for concern. Our objectives were to assess the feasibility, acceptability and impact of a novel intervention to reduce burnout and improve wellbeing. This is the first wellbeing intervention for medical doctors to include strategies for work-life boundary management and digital wellbeing.
Gender Recognition or Gender Reductionism?
ABSTRACT Automatic Gender Recognition (AGR) refers to various computational methods that aim to identify an individual's gender by extracting and analyzing features from images, video, and/or audio. Applications of AGR are increasingly being explored in domains such as security, marketing, and social robotics. However, little is known about stakeholders' perceptions and attitudes towards AGR and how this technology might disproportionately affect vulnerable communities.

ABSTRACT Board games present accessibility barriers for players with visual impairment since they often employ visuals alone to communicate gameplay information. Our research focuses on board game accessibility for those with visual impairment. This paper describes a three-phase study conducted to develop board game accessibility adaptation guidelines.

What influences the selection of contextual cues when starting a new routine behaviour? An exploratory study
Abstract Background Contextual cues play an important role in facilitating behaviour change. They not only support memory but may also help to make the new behaviour automatic through the formation of new routines. However, previous research shows that when people start a new behaviour, they tend to select cues that lack effectiveness for prompting behaviour.
Optimising Encoding for Vibrotactile Skin Reading
ABSTRACT This paper proposes methods of optimising alphabet encoding for skin reading in order to avoid perception errors. First, a user study with 16 participants using two body locations serves to identify issues in recognition of both individual letters and words.

Bored during the Christmas break? Get creative with science
On Christmas Day in 1900, the ornithologist Frank M Chapman proposed a new holiday tradition – a “Christmas bird count”. This involved counting birds during the holidays rather than hunting them. The project continued year after year, in what is thought to be one of the longest running citizen science projects ever. Tens of thousands of volunteers continue to take part across North America, united by their passion for wildlife and conservation.

Cancer Survivors’ Experience With Telehealth: A Systematic Review and Thematic Synthesis
The term “cancer survivor” is used to encompass all individuals living with cancer “from the time of diagnosis and for the balance of life” [ ]. Rates of cancer survival are considered a key metric for cancer control [ ]. There are 2.5 million cancer survivors in the United Kingdom and this is predicted to increase to 4 million by 2030, in line with the increase in both cancer incidence and net survival rates identified for many cancer types worldwide between 1995 and 2009 [ ].
Developing, implementing and evaluating an end of life care intervention
Aim To develop, implement and evaluate a collaborative intervention in care homes seeking to increase the confidence and competence of staff in end of life care and enable more people to receive end of life care in their usual place of residence. Method A two-phase exploratory mixed methods design was used, evaluating the effect of an end of life care toolkit and associated training in care homes, facilitated by a specialist palliative care team.
Speed reading apps are great for snippets but not sonnets
A new app is about to come on the market with promises to dramatically increase the speed at which you read. Spritz is a text streaming technology that allows you to read a sentence, one word at a time. Each word is shown for only a brief flash, in the same place on a screen, before the next appears. Up to 1,000 words can be shown every minute, which would allow you to race through an entire novel in just 90 minutes.
