Birth order and disease risk across the human phenome
Abstract Birth-order effects on disease risk have been studied for individual conditions but have not been systematically assessed at phenome-wide scale in large sibling claims cohorts. We apply two complementary designs, a between-family matched cohort (1.6 million pairs) as a high-powered phenome-wide scan, and a within-family sibling comparison (5.1 million families) as an internally controlled sibling contrast, to 569 diseases in Merative MarketScan claims data.

IL-17A-producing NKp44(−) group 3 innate lymphoid cells accumulate in Familial Adenomatous Polyposis duodenal tissue - Nature Communications
Abstract Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an inherited gastrointestinal syndrome associated with duodenal adenoma formation. Even among carriers of the same genetic variant, duodenal phenotypes vary, indicating that additional factors, such as the local immune system, play a role. We observe an increase in duodenal IL-17A(+)NKp44(−) innate lymphoid type 3 cell (ILC3) in FAP, localized near the epithelium and enriched in adenomas and carcinomas.

Profiling cellular heterogeneity and fructose transporter expression in the rat nephron by integrating single-cell and microdissected tubule segment transcriptomes
Abstract Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq) is a crucial tool in kidney research. These technologies cluster cells according to transcriptome similarity, irrespective of the anatomical location and ordering within the nephron. Thus, a cluster transcriptome may obscure heterogeneity of the cell population within a nephron segment. Elevated dietary fructose leads to salt-sensitive hypertension, in part by fructose reabsorption in the proximal tubule (PT).

Preparedness and patient advocacy By David J. Margraf, PharmD, PhD and Stephen W. Schondelmeyer, PharmD, PhD The health care industry is faced with an alarming rate of drug shortages, posing significant challenges for physicians and patients alike. In July 2023, there were 309 drug products in shortage according to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)—a record high for the last decade.

The Inflation Reduction Act and Health Care
The risk of a dementia misdiagnosis is proceeding with an ill-fitting care plan that ultimately diminishes an individual’s health progress. When circumstances permit, physicians should refer families to neurologists or geriatricians who specialize in dementia diagnosis. They can then follow up to ensure such appointments are met and review the resulting findings.
A Bold New Partnership
Serving Overlapping Needs When I shared the news of the new association with TCO on Twitter, I was asked why rheumatology would opt to align with an orthopedic practice. I explained that the majority of my patients have overlap with orthopedics. We can provide better care to more patients working as part of a team-based system in which each physician can collaboratively utilize his or her specialized skills.
The New Noncompete Agreement Laws
Additional Questions Under the New Law Banning Noncompetes Amendments to an employment agreement The statute applies to any noncompete entered into on or after July 1, 2023. What does entered into mean? Does amending an employment agreement with a pre-existing noncompete result in its being entered into post - July 1, 2023? What if the amendment does not impact the noncompete and deals only with other terms? What if an agreement is assigned as part of a sale of a practice?

Tigers Minor League Report
The Detroit Tigers saw many pitchers in their farm system make names for themselves over the course of the 2022 season. Some guys were relatively unknown, such as Brant Hurter while others were high draft picks with high pedigrees like Ty Madden. The recent success that Detroit has had with developing pitching leads me to believe that the Tigers will have another batch of successful seasons coming from the guys who man the rubber.
Single-cell RNA sequencing identifies a population of human liver-type ILC1s
Having detected a putative LT-ILC1 population in human liver samples via unbiased scRNA-seq analyses ( Figure 1 B), we next sought to further characterize these cells based on their expression patterns of surface proteins.
Get to know Brendan White
Tuesday, November 15th was the last day teams had to protect rule 5 eligible players from the 2022 rule 5 draft. The Tigers added IF Wenceel Perez, OF Parker Meadows, RHP Reese Olson, IF Andre Lipcius, and RHP Brendan White to the 40-man roster. Most Tiger fans expected to see the likes of Perez, Meadows, Olson, and Lipcius get protected, so it was a bit of a shock to the fan base to see Brendan White on that list. Many fans didn’t even know who Brendan White was.

Tocilizumab in Patients Hospitalized with Covid-19 Pneumonia
39 References 178 Citing Articles Letters Related Articles Abstract Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pneumonia is often associated with hyperinflammation. Despite the disproportionate incidence of Covid-19 among underserved and racial and ethnic minority populations, the safety and efficacy of the anti–interleukin-6 receptor antibody tocilizumab in patients from these populations who are hospitalized with Covid-19 pneumonia are unclear.

cover story one Preparedness and patient advocacy By David J. Margraf, PharmD, PhD and Stephen W. Schondelmeyer, PharmD, PhD Disruptions of pharmaceutical supply chains resulting in drug shortages became more visible as the COVID-19 pandemic surged resulting in more stress on the already over-burdened U.S. health care system, although drug shortages have been present in the U.S. market for decades.

Cyanobacteria of the 2016 Lake Okeechobee and Okeechobee Waterway harmful algal bloom
The Lake Okeechobee and the Okeechobee Waterway (Lake Okeechobee, the St. Lucie Canal and River, and the Caloosahatchee River) experienced an extensive harmful algal bloom within Lake Okeechobee, the St. Lucie Canal and River and the Caloosahatchee River in 2016. In addition to the very visible bloom of the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa, several other cyanobacteria were present.
Thinking of Others
Media contain various cues to opinions of others and therefore serve as an important source of information about the climate of opinion. We distinguish explicit cues directly describing opinion distributions in society, from implicit cues lacking such a direct reference. In an experiment, we examined the relative impact of survey data (explicit cue) and arguments (implicit cue) on climate of opinion judgments.
