Opinion: Capitalism hasn’t had its day
Professor Leonard Hitchcock recently declared that capitalism has “had its day.” It is a remarkable conclusion, especially because he never tells us what should replace it. That omission matters. Anyone can criticize an imperfect system. The real challenge is identifying a better one. Capitalism was never designed by a single philosopher sitting in an office.
Opinion: The hidden trillion-dollar tax
The true cost of tax compliance in the United States isn’t measured in dollars collected, but in dollars never created. Nowhere is that loss more visible than among professionals and others whose time is directly tied to revenue. For these individuals, every hour has a measurable market value. Every hour diverted to tax compliance isn’t simply inconvenient — it’s economically destructive.
Letter: I’m an Anchorage teacher. I don’t want to go on strike, but I’ll support one to get a fair contract.
I’m a teacher in the Anchorage School District. I began teaching in ASD in 2011 after 10 years working as an inventor in Colorado with a Ph.D. in chemical engineering. As a teacher, I’m working about twice as hard for about half the pay. Between 2014, when I began working full time for ASD, and here at the end of 2025, my gross annual pay has increased 44%.
Get Engaged in Tallahassee • Visit Tallahassee
From Labor Day to Valentine’s Day and so many holidays in between, this is the time of year most popular to pop the question “Will you marry me?” Whether under century-old live oak trees symbolizing the roots of family or the romantic reflections of meandering natural water trails, Tallahassee offers the perfect spot for any couple to commit to a future together and even to hold their ceremony.
Opinion: Rules for thee, not for Stephanie
Idaho state Rep. Stephanie Mickelsen was recently in the news for having an illegal alien who choked his wife in front of his child while carrying meth in his wallet employed by her family farm. It appears that someone turned her in to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for investigation. My purpose today is not to debate whether someone should or should not have blown the whistle. Instead, my purpose is to share Stephanie’s rich hypocrisy.

Opinion: Democrats control Idaho Senate, GOP narrowly holds House
A report from the Institute for Legislative Analysis, an offshoot of the American Conservative Union, has found that many Idaho state legislators vote as “philosophical Democrats.” This is extremely consistent with the findings of the Idaho Freedom Foundation over the last 10 years, which has shown similar findings year over year. Freedom Foundation’s scoring metrics closely mirror the state GOP platform — a quick internet search reveals as much.
Letter: Ambler Road blunder
This paper has printed a wide variety of opinion pieces on the Ambler project, but none that made me laugh out loud — until the recent piece from Bethany Marcum. “If Alaskans — especially in the counties adjacent to the project — want to build our road,” is how she began her final paragraph. Counties? Marcum has lived in Alaska and worked in politics for more than 10 years, but still hasn’t assimilated that we don’t have counties?

Culture The Color Pink
FILE - The Thom Browne Spring 2016 collection is modeled during Fashion Week, Sept. 14, 2015, in New York. In 2016, the experts at the Pantone Color Institute chose two colors of the year, "Rose Quartz," a pale pink, and "Serenity," a shade closer to baby blue. "Rose Quartz," a muted dusty pink color, is calming but also connotes strength, Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, told The Associated Press.
Opinion: Don’t reward unlawful conduct on bond vote
To ensure “transparent and ethical government,” a “public entity” in Idaho cannot use “public funds” to “advocate” for a “ballot measure.” I.C. 74-602 and 74-603(6). A “public entity” includes a “school district.” I.C. 74-603(6). This means neither District 91 nor its employees shall make or authorize an “expenditure” from “public funds” to “advocate” for a “ballot measure” I.C. 74-604(1).

Opinion: What’s the lesson for you on income taxes?
When our Founding Fathers gave us the United States Constitution, it contained no provision for Congress to tax income. That all changed on Feb. 25, 1913, when Secretary of State Philander C. Knox certified ratification of the 16th Amendment that allowed Congress to tax income. Today, federal income tax rates start at 10% and go as high as 37%. The Social Security and Medicare tax is another 15.3%. Employers pay a portion of this for the employee.

Senators Risch and Crapo: The case for term limits
United States Senators Jim Risch and Mike Crapo recently joined 17 other Senate Republicans and all 50 Senate Democrats to pass Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill. Risch and Crapo joined the likes of Mitt Romney, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski in supporting the infrastructure bill. This bill was not offset with any spending cuts, which means $1.2 trillion will be added to the national debt for our grandchildren to pay with interest.
Guest opinion: Governor should have allowed McGeachin mask ban
While Governor Little was out of state, Lieutenant Governor Janice McGeachin, acting as Governor in Little’s absence, signed an executive order that prevented cities, local school boards, and other local government authorities from mandating masks. Upon his return, Little immediately rescinded McGeachin’s executive order. Now local governments can once again mandate masks.

Upon his return, Little immediately rescinded McGeachin’s executive order. Now local governments can once again mandate masks.

Idaho Republicans have no confidence in Simpson
In response to Congressman Simpson’s proposal to breach four hydroelectric dams on the lower Snake River, I wrote an article last month entitled, “Congressman Simpson Should Put Idaho First and Do No Harm.” The article named players who oppose Simpson’s plan, including Gov. Brad Little, United States Senators Jim Risch and Mike Crapo, Rep. Russ Fulcher, and even both houses of the Idaho State Legislature, which issued a rare joint memorial condemning Simpson’s plan.

Congressman Simpson should put Idaho first and do no harm
The expression “first do no harm” is a popular phrase often attributed to the Hippocratic oath taken by doctors. The idea is that it may be better to do nothing rather than intervening and causing more harm than good. The Hippocratic oath taken by dentists includes a similar promise to do no intentional harm to patients.

No such thing as 'budget surplus' for some Democrats
Democrat Pat Tucker recently wrote she cannot agree with me that a grocery sales tax elimination would benefit all Idahoans. Interestingly, House Democrats are currently working to repeal the grocery sales tax. These Democrats know providing a 6% tax break on food helps low-income earners the most because these folks spend a larger share of their income on food.
Pat ain’t happy unless she’s redistributing wealth
Recently, Pat Tucker, the chairwoman of the Bonneville County Democratic Central Committee, published an “open letter to Bryan Smith” expressing her contempt about my misplaced priorities for spending Idaho’s $630 million budget surplus.
Lawmakers can provide massive tax relief in 2021
As we now cast our eyes to the soon-to-convene 2021 legislative session, we behold a marvelous and perhaps generational opportunity for lawmakers to boldly provide sweeping tax relief for Idaho families and small businesses. But will they? Bryan Smith Idaho is loaded with cash. Consider that officials believe the state will end its fiscal year with a budget surplus in excess of $603 million. That’s a truckload of moola. There’s more.
Free government health care for able-bodied adults already busting budgets
You’ve been had, Idaho. Bamboozled. Fooled. Hoodwinked. And your kids, my kids and our grandkids are going to pay the price for this massive deception. But there’s still a faint glimmer of hope if Idaho lawmakers take decisive action during the 2021 legislative session. Bryan Smith I’m talking about Medicaid expansion, the government program that gives free health care to able-bodied adults who don’t make very much money. You remember the expansion fight, right?

Letter: No election violence
I keep thinking about Eric Wohlforth’s letter from Oct. 11 appealing for “the complete disavowal of election-related violence.” As I read today’s article on the intensity that many voters are feeling this election season, I have figured out why: Most people don’t recognize how malleable their dispositions can be, how they might be moved to action in the heat of the moment, especially in a large crowd.
