With a weekend nor'easter bearing down on Long Island, officials across Nassau County are building up beach defenses and urging residents to prepare for high winds and coastal flooding. At Tobay Beach, berms have been built to protect the tunnels which lead to the ocean. "Bottom line is we don't know how bad this storm will be," said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. The berms aim to prevent the tunnels from getting clogged. Saladino told News 12 that erosion is always a concern.

Coastal crews and local residents across Long Island are racing against the clock to reinforce shorelines and secure property ahead of an approaching weekend nor'easter. A large wall of sand stretches from the East Bathhouse to the West Bathhouse at Jones Beach. Employees worked Wednesday to add height to it. "The wall of sand is great. It has prevented flooding. It has prevented damages," said New York State Parks Regional Director George Gorman.

Mineola man on parole accused of creating makeshift lab in apartment, starting fire

A Mineola man who is out on parole is accused of creating a makeshift lab in his apartment and starting a fire, according to officials. Nolan Gaugler allegedly had a slew of materials in his Lincoln Avenue apartment, authorities say, including flammable liquids, flammable solids, acids, bases and some poisonous materials. He was allegedly conducting a chemistry experiment when "the mixture reacted violently," according to court documents.
