Just days after he resigned as science minister, Patrick Vallance is back, chairing a new Andy Burnham government artificial intelligence (AI) Taskforce. The taskforce, headed by AI minister Kanishka Narayan, is being set up to drive the government’s overall strategy on AI and deliver Burnham’s AI strategy. It will be based with first secretary of state Louise Haigh in the Office for the Prime Minister and the Cabinet (OPMC).

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has reported revenue for the second quarter of 2026 of £120bn, an increase of 24%, with Google Cloud experiencing “accelerated” growth. The Google Cloud Platform posted revenue of almost $25bn, an 82% increase from the previous year, driven by demand for artificial intelligence (AI).
