A 24-hour livestream lets you watch adorable newborn cheetah cubs at the National Zoo
Five cheetah cubs were born at the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) in a breeding facility at Front Royal, Virginia, on Oct. 5. The litter is the fourth generation in a bloodline born at SCBI, starting with the cubs' great-grandmother, Sanurra. Next came Rosalie in 2015, then Zura in 2021, and now, the SCBI's newest litter of five. The Smithsonian's cheetah campus and breeding program are built to limit human interaction early on, including keepers and staff.

Mortgage rates have just surpassed 7% for the first time in well over a year
The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage leaped to 7.03% on Thursday, according to the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp., which also goes by Freddie Mac. This is the first time the rate has passed the 7% mark in 20 months, or since January 2025. While the 7% mortgage rate milestone holds no literal significance beyond the psychological effect of the round number, the sharp rise in rates since March risks further squeezing the budgets of homebuyers.
The economic squeeze is pushing up poverty rates for older adults
The poverty rate among seniors rose for the fifth straight year in 2025, "a trend no other age group experienced," according to an AARP Foundation analysis of a new Census Bureau report. AARP Foundation finds women are far more likely than men to age into poverty, and the trend starts earlier as low-income older adults struggle to stay employed and save up in the crucial years before retirement.
