‘Corrupt leadership’: Anonymous letter from officers calls for changes within Horry County police

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - An anonymous letter from officers inside the Horry County Police Department is criticizing department leadership, and the department said it never received it. WMBF News received an email from someone identifying themselves as an HCPD officer using a “John Doe” pseudonym, which included a letter they said was sent to every member of Horry County Council. The letter, received by council on May 12, included an indictment of department leadership.

South Carolina Supreme Court orders new double-murder trial for Alex Murdaugh

COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - Alex Murdaugh will have a new day in court. The South Carolina Supreme Court ordered a new trial Wednesday for Murdaugh, who was previously convicted of killing his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, on June 7, 2021, at the Moselle property. In the order, the court found that Murdaugh did not have a fair trial because of former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill.

Longtime Horry County police captain forced to retire for criticizing leadership, lawsuit says

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A police captain with 27 years of service at the Horry County Police Department claims he was forced to retire for speaking out against his department. Danny Furr filed a lawsuit Wednesday against Horry County, the Horry County Police Department, Chief Kris Leonhardt, former Deputy Chief Lance Winburn, Capt. Brandon Lee and Deputy County Administrator Renee Hardwick. Furr said he was forced to retire after speaking out about HCPD leadership and whistleblowing.
