After a yearslong wait, students in Jean Lafitte are one step closer to getting their school back. Nearly five years to the day after Hurricane Ida destroyed the small town’s only school for grades 6-12, the Jefferson Parish school board during a meeting Wednesday approved a $68 million contract with local architecture firm Verges Rome Architects to rebuild Lafitte’s Fisher Middle-High School. If construction goes according to schedule, the new campus is slated to open in fall 2028.

Charter school for dyslexic students delays Jefferson Parish campus launch, citing low enrollment

A Louisiana charter school for dyslexic children has pushed back the official launch of its new Jefferson Parish campus as it works to enroll more students. Louisiana Key Academy, which operates three campuses across the state, was slated to open a fourth location for grades 1-4 in Metairie last month. However, the school told state officials this summer that it is delaying the launch of the new campus until August 2027.
