(WLOX) — While hurricane hunters play a crucial role in collecting data inside a storm, local National Weather Service offices also play a big role in collecting storm data for forecast models. Every day, twice a day, all over the world, a weather balloon is launched into the sky carrying a weather instrument called a radiosonde. The radiosonde takes atmospheric measurements as it rises into the sky. The collected data is then fed into computer forecast models.

NWS confirms three tornadoes in South Mississippi spawned by Arthur; 16 total

BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) — The National Weather Service in Mobile has confirmed a third tornado in South Mississippi spawned by the remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur. This brings the total number of confirmed tornadoes from Louisiana, South Mississippi, and Alabama to 16 - after another tornado was confirmed in Mobile County. The tornado in Stone County was rated as a high-end EF-1 with max winds 110 mph.
