SLIDELL, La. (WLOX) — While hurricane hunters play a crucial role in collecting data inside a storm, local National Weather Service offices also play a big role in collecting storm data for forecast models. Every day, twice a day, all over the world, a weather balloon is launched into the sky carrying a weather instrument called a radiosonde. The radiosonde takes atmospheric measurements as it rises into the sky. The collected data is then fed into computer forecast models.
