Florida’s immigration crackdown is showing cracks: ‘We’re hurting people’
MIAMI — A year after Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida pledged to make his state one of the toughest in the nation on immigration enforcement, he has largely succeeded: More immigration arrests were made in Florida in 2025 than any state but Texas, and there have been few signs of the crackdown easing.

The Shutdown Is Over. For Many SNAP Recipients, the Scars Remain. Original
When a little more than half of her monthly food stamp benefit came through on Tuesday, Deana Pearson headed to the grocery store and spent all $172 of it. She bought eggs, cheese, meat, sugar and produce. For two weeks, Ms. Pearson, 61, of Chouteau, Okla., had been forced to scrimp. Her balance through the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which helps about 42 million low-income people buy groceries every month, had shrunk to $1.17, she said.

David Brooks: The story Elon Musk lives by: part Moses, part John Wayne, part Harry Potter
In his biography of Alexander Hamilton, Ron Chernow writes that Hamilton “always had to fight the residual sadness of the driven man.” That sentence has stayed with me because I’ve also noticed that there can be something sad about extremely ambitious people — like they’re striving furiously to fill a hole that was carved into them by traumatic experiences during childhood, and they have never quite succeeded.
Virtual reality has expanded into a new field: Job training
Aug. 10 at 8:00 a.m. Virtual reality typically evokes futuristic connotations, with talk of the metaverse and high-priced headsets feeling distant for most consumers. But in recent years, VR has gained a foothold in an area with far more practical implications: job training. More and more employers are using VR to train their workers, from store clerks to doctors to jet pilots.
The stigma around mental health is fading, with celebrities playing a role
Every year, Kellie Deys assigns her students at Nichols College in Massachusetts to write about a music video. The English professor prompts them with questions like “What does this video mean to you? What does this video say about you? Can you relate to the video?” After about a decade of giving this assignment, Deys noticed a certain video started coming up again and again. The song’s title is not a word or a phrase, but a phone number.

How science fiction helped inspire the modern space movement
Well, science fiction writers did. "Crashing big things into celestial objects goes all the way back to the 1930s stories of Edmond 'World Wrecker' Hamilton," Lisa Yaszek, regents professor of science fiction studies at Georgia Tech, wrote in a text message.
How science fiction helped inspire the modern space movement
On a Monday evening last September, a NASA spacecraft intentionally blasted into an asteroid in deep space. The goal was planetary defense - protecting our planet from the kind of wayward rock that could end civilization as we know it. The unprecedented moment seemed surreal, with a camera from the craft sending footage back to Earth of a large asteroid getting bigger and bigger until - pow! - impact.

Hurricane Nicole Causes Four Deaths, Forces Evacuation of Unsteady Buildings
WILBUR-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. — Hurricane Nicole whipped through Florida on Thursday, a rare November storm that crashed huge waves along the coast, collapsed houses into the Atlantic Ocean, required the evacuation of unstable waterfront condo buildings and washed away roads and beaches. Nicole, the first hurricane to come ashore on the state’s Atlantic coast since Katrina in 2005, became a tropical storm shortly after making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at around 3 a.m. south of Vero Beach.

"I've learned my lesson," he said. Umali's lesson came a few years ago, when he started placing a daily bet on an online poker game. It seemed like a relatively harmless pastime - for a short while. "It was $50, $100, $150," he says. "Then one night I sat at home and added it up.
Inside the world of NIL
There's a distinctive smell to college football. While we speak of sights and sounds - tailgate barbecues, marching bands playing fight songs, the clash of shoulder pads, the roar of a student section pounding the bleachers under the lights - the smells are even more visceral. It starts with fresh-cut grass on crisp autumn air, clean like an unblemished record or a new semester.
Dillan Gibbons Makes Most of NIL with Big Man Big Heart Initiative
Dillan Gibbons didn’t enter Notre Dame with any dreams of changing the football landscape. Then he met Irish fan Timothy Donovan. It was after a home game at Notre Dame Stadium when Gibbons first saw Donovan in his wheelchair. The two made eye contact and Gibbons came over and gave the Irish fan his game gloves. Donovan has Charcot-Marie-Tooth — a disease that causes nerve damage in his arms and legs — and the brief meeting stuck with Gibbons.
Money Talks: Name, Image and Likeness Raises the Stakes for Players and Schools Alike
As the football world focused its attention on the NFL Draft in late April, a headline-stealing report emerged: New USC head coach Lincoln Riley and the Trojans were testing the limits of college football's new name, image and likeness policy, attempting to lure reigning Biletnikoff Award-winning wideout Jordan Addison of the Pittsburgh Panthers into the transfer portal and on to SoCal via a reportedly massive NIL enticement. The reactions were swift and vehement.
Tropical Weather Brings Heavy Rains and Flooding to Florida
ORLANDO— Residents of South Florida woke up to heavy rain and flooding in some areas on Saturday as a rapidly growing weather system moved into the region. Although the tropical system did not turn into a named storm as it washed ashore on Friday night, it was expected to bring more than a foot of rain to some areas, including the Florida Keys, the Bahamas and Cuba, meteorologists said. In Miami, drivers faced slashing rains and flooded streets in the early hours of Saturday morning.

ORLANDO — On the freshly painted white walls of Mannie and Jamie Carmona’s downtown spa here, there’s a plastic case filled with empty Botox vials and syringes. A label on the case reads, “In case of emergency, break glass.” The cheeky decoration has taken on a bit of extra meaning lately, as the spa is experiencing the best kind of emergency: The pandemic has waned, the masks have come off, the Zoom cameras have stayed on, and business is exploding.

Pitch Perfect Kate Abdo Of CBS Sports
By Eric Adelson Kate Abdo's first soccer memory came when her dad took her to Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium to cheer on his beloved team, Manchester United. “Much to my mom’s disgust,” says Kate with a laugh. Kate’s mother, you see, was rooting for Liverpool. Abdo wasn’t a diehard soccer fan until that day.

Purdue's David Bell is one of the best route-runners in this year's wide receiver class, and it's a skill that NFL teams are paying even more attention to David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports In his first college football game in 2018, Rondale Moore sprinted into a jet sweep from the Purdue 24-yard-line. 2022 NFL Draft: Edge Rushers in High Demand
In Minnesota, they call it the "Rush Room." That's the place where the Gophers' edge rushers gather to plan and prepare. Cool name for a meeting room, right? Except the thing about the Rush Room is … it's not really a room, per se. The Gophers had to make up a Rush Room because the position morphs like Minnesota fall foliage. "We had our own position meetings because the position was so unique," says Boye Mafe, a no-name freshman turned sleeper NFL Draft prospect for the Gophers.

In his new book ‘Chatter’, University of Michigan psychology professor Ethan Kross explores how we can harness – and control – our inner monologues. By Eric Adelson When we log onto Facebook, we get a loaded question: “What’s on your mind?” This question is different, and cloudier, than Twitter’s “What’s happening?” It hints toward something more incomplete, more personal, more difficult to answer.
The Bucs are set to defend their title, with no drama and a more carefree Tom Brady
TAMPA — A practice horn blares, and a flock of fans under a sunbaked awning yells for the most famous Florida Man of them all. Tom Brady, the 44-year-old seven-time Super Bowl champion quarterback, takes his position under center and proceeds to drop a couple of steps and fire a pass to a receiver. He repeats this over and over, every pass into the waiting palms of the intended target, each man stepping into the path of the ball in stride.
Jaguars fans hope Trevor Lawrence is their savior. He seems unfazed by the pressure.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — DJ Chark sprinted across the field and looked back across his left shoulder, hoping for a pass before he ran out of room. It was a simulated third down in the red zone — the kind of play that hasn’t worked consistently for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offense in a long time. Chark streaked toward the white painted border of the end zone and then the ball finally came his way, zipping through the dragonfly-filled August air and right to his fingertips.

Sunday morning, February 18, 2001 "We met every day in his coach. He always sat at this little table in a dining area. We sat across from each other. He was wearing a black shirt and jeans – his Sunday attire. Then he would put on a leather jacket to go to the drivers' meeting. He was very positive that day.
Kansas City Chiefs fans flood Tampa ahead of Super Bowl LV
By Eric Adelson Special to FOX Sports TAMPA, Fla. — Andy Reid clutches his laminated play card and squints into the sunshine from behind his trademark glasses and fogged-up face shield. "I promised myself I would never miss another Chiefs Super Bowl," he says, standing on the beach like a red-shirted Andy Dufresne from "The Shawshank Redemption." Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs were humbled in Super Bowl LV
By Eric Adelson Special to FOX Sports Nine points. One of the most explosive offenses in NFL history scored nine points. In the Super Bowl. Patrick Mahomes? Mystified. Tyreek Hill? Taunted. Travis Kelce? Contained. Andy Reid? Checkmated. Nine points. "Worst I’ve been beaten in a long time," Mahomes said after the game. What in the world happened to the champs? "I checked my email. At first, I didn’t think it was real. It said, ‘Congratulations, you’re a winner!' I thought, ‘Is this real? I can’t believe this is real.'" It was real: Cress, an intensive care nurse at Tampa General Hospital, was selected by the NFL to go to Super Bowl LV — for free.
Tampa Bay's Tom Brady redefines how NFL players age
By Eric Adelson Special to FOX Sports TAMPA, Fla.—Even the talk of Tom Brady’s age is getting old. The 43-year-old Buccaneers quarterback will be the oldest player ever to start at the position in Super Bowl LV on Sunday, just as he was at age 40 and again at age 41. At this rate, legendary golfer Old Tom Morris will be replaced as the most famous "Old Tom" by next week. But is Old Tom Brady really that old? Sure, he’s ancient by football standards.
Old School vs. New School: MJ or LeBron?
By Eric Adelson Special to FOX Sports Some people learned to bake sourdough bread during the pandemic. I taught sports debate to kids. I know, I know: You probably think I should be shot into the sun for encouraging Gen Z to continue our national obsession with "Who’s the GOAT?" But I had good intentions — at least a couple, anyway. And I came away with a very different way of looking at Old School vs. New School.
A New City Of Champions
By Eric Adelson Special to FOX Sports TAMPA, Fla. – Aric Almirola never dreamed of a Tampa sports streak like this. When he was growing up, three Tampa teams playing for championships wasn’t just unlikely — it was impossible. The city had only one big-time professional sports franchise, and that team wasn’t very big-time at all.
