Juneteenth celebration planned in Texarkana

TEXARKANA (KSLA) - The Scholars, a nonprofit group based out of Texarkana, Ark., is preparing for a citywide Juneteenth celebration at the Four States Fair Grounds this weekend. The event will kick off at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 20 with a parade. Several vendors will be on site. “This is a family oriented event, so it’s going to be a great fun evening of entertainment. We have a concert planned out,” said Chiquita Burks, a representative with The Scholars.

LITTLE RIVER COUNTY, Ark. (KSLA) - Employees with Southwest Arkansas Electric Co-op spent part of the day picking corn as volunteers. A Little River County farmer donated two acres of corn to Harvest Regional Food Bank. Harvest Regional Food Bank leaders sent the call out last week for volunteers to harvest the crop today and tomorrow.

Hope hospital gets funding boost after voters approve tax

HOPE, Ark. (KSLA) - Southwest Arkansas Regional Medical Center got a major funding boost this week after voters approved a hospital tax. An overwhelming 82% of voters approved the three-quarter cent tax. Hospital Administrator Shelby Brown estimates it will generate about $3 million a year. The money can only be used for the hospital. “I think it was a statement to people of Hempstead County that want to make sure they continue to have quality healthcare close to home,” Brown said.
