What parents need to know about vaccines this fall | Guest column
The calendar flips to August, and parents everywhere know what's coming. The rush to buy new backpacks, meet new teachers and adapt to new schedules. Almost without fail, the first round of sniffles kicks in, too, with a few hundred kids back in the same building together. kAmxEVD 2 C:EF2= 2D 72>:=:2C 2D E96 D49@@= DFAA=J 2:D=6 2E J@FC =@42= DE@C6] qFE E9:D J62C[ >@C6 A2C6?ED E92? xVG6 D66? :? >J ad J62CD @7 AC24E:46 2C6 9625:?8 :?E@ 72== H:E9 C62= F?46CE2:?EJ 23@FE H92E E@ 5@ H96? The Schoolhouse as Clinic: The Dangerous Mission Creep of Public School Mental Health Screenings
Virginia parents should be alarmed that the Virginia General Assembly just passed House Bill 355, which mandates annual mental health screenings for all public school students in grades 6 through 12. While framed as a compassionate response to a very real "mental health crisis," it represents a fundamental shift in the mission of public education: from academic instruction to clinical surveillance.
Hey, Virginia Democrats. That was one hasty, flawed remap bid. | Mark Rozell
If Democrats in Virginia could go back just six months, would they approach their mid-decade reapportionment constitutional amendment gambit a bit differently, perhaps with greater care and strategic forethought? Perhaps they felt they lacked the luxury of time for deep deliberation on strategy and execution because Texas, run by Trump-loyalist Republicans, forced their hand, and those of some other Democrat-led states. kAm!C6D:56?E s@?2=5 %CF>A =2DE J62C DF886DE65 E92E #6AF3=:42?
David Toscano: October has been a month full of surprises in Virginia politics
October is a month for football games, falling leaves — and political surprises. Washington gave us another government shutdown, not remarkable in its occurrence but surprising for its length and Republican leadership’s disinterest in getting it resolved.
Purrfect ending: Missing Virginia store cat found after hitching a ride to another state
RICHMOND, Va. — Francine the calico cat is back home at a Lowe's store in Virginia after going missing for a few weeks, hitching a ride on a truck that turned up at a sister facility in another state. Two employees from a Lowe's in Richmond made the 90-minute drive early Monday to pick up Francine, who disappeared in September and recently was discovered at the company's distribution center in Garysburg, North Carolina.
Letter: Is DEI really such a bad thing?
I recently saw a meme that asked, “If you’re opposed to DEI, what specifically is it that you don’t like: the diversity, the equity, or the inclusion?” Given that DEI is driving real-world policy and personnel decisions, the question hardly seems rhetorical.
Letter: What happened to Christian music concerts?
I want to add my two cents regarding the musical acts being scheduled at the various music venues in the area. Maybe I’m old, but we used to get Christian acts here. And Kings Dominion used to have a gospel weekend. The Richmond Coliseum was just about filled the last time the Gaither Homecoming group came to the city. There are least five or six outside venues hosting concerts in Richmond, not including the Altria Theater and the Dominion Energy Center.
Letter: RTD headlines show climate-change duality
As a reader of the print version of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, I have to note the dissonance in the placement of two articles immediately opposite one another in the June 20 newspaper. On page A6, the headline reads: “Earth nearing temperature threshold, study says,” reporting on climate change findings. “Things aren’t just getting worse. They’re getting worse faster,” according to study co-author and climate scientist Zeke Hausfather.
Letter: Surprise, Williams sees racism at amphitheater
When reading Michael Paul Williams' recent column on the Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront ("RVA's new venue needs DEI," June 15), I asked myself — once again — if Williams will ever write a column that does not include a charge of racism or anti-DEI actions. Based on the list of artists announced thus far for this new Richmond entertainment site, Williams says, "I detected the harsh note of exclusion, and the sense that this ...
Letter: Disappointed in RTD's 'No Kings' coverage
I am very disappointed, ashamed really, at the lack of coverage of the "No Kings" protest in Richmond on June 14. There was a very large and peaceful protest in Richmond. The Richmond Times-Dispatch chose to publish a photo of one lone protester with a sign on the front page on June 15; inside, there was an Associated Press report on other cities' protests and one snapshot of the march in Richmond.
Letter: Do kings cut taxes and relinquish autonomy?
There's been lots of chatter about the "No Kings Day" protests on Saturday, so let's reflect. In days past kings raised taxes on their subjects and dispatched brutal tax collectors to every corner of the land. He used his armies to conquer neighboring nations and expand his territory. President Donald Trump would be the first monarch ever to cut taxes across the board, reduce the size and scope of his "empire" and relinquish autonomy to his subjects.
Letter: Will the GOP ever stop Donald Trump?
Dear Congressman Rob Wittman, The hypocrisy of President Donald Trump freeing thousands of J6 insurrectionists for laying violent siege to our Capitol for the purpose of an attempted coup on his behalf, and his illegal deployment of the National Guard and the U.S. Marines into Los Angeles due to, as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth cited, “increased threats to federal law enforcement officers and federal buildings” during legally questionable ICE raids is off the charts.
Williams: America's choice is right or wrong, not left or right
PHILADELPHIA – It’s only natural that the city called the Birthplace of America would become a focal point of Saturday’s “No Kings Day,” attracting an estimated 80,000 protesters. This city, after all, was where the Declaration of Independence was signed 249 years ago. And contrary to Donald Trump’s bizarre take, that document was not “a declaration of unity and love and respect.” It was the ultimate “no kings” statement — an acrimonious divorce from the British crown, sealed in the blood of war.
Williams: Heavy on country, light on Black artists: RVA's new venue needs DEI
Sly Stone modeled a brand of diversity, equity and inclusion that would serve well as a template for Richmond’s new musical venue, Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront. Sly and the Family Stone as a band was an early model of integration — Black, white, male and female — when it arrived on the music scene in the late 1960s.

Letter: We need bravery, not guns
Art Kellermann (“Want to make homes safer? Get rid of the guns,” March 3) tries to heal the wounds of guns and cites research and facts that having guns in your home is not guaranteed defense, and we should heed his advice. More guns in more hands does not equal safety, but the opposite. This year, Virginia had another chance to pass laws that would help lessen gun violence rather than continuing the “arms race” to have as many guns as possible and carry them wherever you wish.
Letter: What does a better Richmond look like?
With citywide elections in eight months, we should ask, “What does a better Richmond look like?” A better Richmond looks like a grocery store within a 10-minute walk of every resident, and a GRTC with expanded and faster service with a bench, trash can and covered shelter at every bus stop. Affordable and ample day care, and all Richmond Public Schools fully accredited. A much lower eviction rate, and a greater supply of affordable housing.
COMMENTARY: When Confederate monuments went up, Black voting went down
Confederate monuments burst into public consciousness in 2015 when a shooting at a historically Black church in Charleston instigated the first broad calls for their removal. The shooter intended to start a race war and had posed with Confederate imagery in photos posted online. Monument removal efforts grew in 2017 after a counterprotester was killed at the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where white supremacist groups defended the preservation of Confederate monuments.

Palliative Sedation Therapy: A Case Report
Introduction Despite repeated exposure to dying patients, critical care providers and nurses may not be familiar with palliative sedation. This case report describes a scenario in which palliative sedation therapy was considered for a patient dying in the intensive care unit. Clinical Findings A 72-year-old woman was transferred from an outside hospital for management of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome. After her transfer, she experienced cardiac arrest and was resuscitated.
Condo? Most Kamloops, Okanagan home buyers still want single-family homes
The push in many cities, but especially the rapidly growing Kelowna, is for higher density housing in condos and fourplexes. But the vast majority of those searching for homes online in the region prefer stand-alone houses. “When the pandemic hit, online house-hunting and virtual touring became the norm,” a study by international real estate portal Point2 Homes says.
Flipping Air Jordans Is No Longer a Slam Dunk
Air Jordans, Nike Dunks and Air Force 1s soared in value last year as investors snapped up basketball-inspired sneakers, hoping to flip them for a profit. The hang time for this market is over. Some of these limited-edition shoes are now reselling for 30% less than just a few months ago as owners unload high-end footwear at reduced prices.

School-Based Dental Sealant Programs Prevent Cavities And Are Cost-Effective
Untreated cavities can have far-reaching negative consequences for people’s ability to eat, speak, and learn. By adolescence, 27 percent of low-income children in the United States will have untreated cavities. School-based sealant programs typically provide dental sealants (a protective coating that adheres to the surface of molars) at little or no cost to students attending schools in areas with low socioeconomic status.
