Wiring Up SMART on FHIR OAuth2 Between OpenEMR and a Python Microservice Locally
I was building an AI agent on top of OpenEMR and hit a wall I didn't expect. Not a hard engineering problem — just documentation. Or the lack of it. OpenEMR ships with a full SMART on FHIR OAuth2 server, and the official authentication docs are a decent starting point. But connecting a custom Python microservice to it? You're mostly on your own.
In Japan, the Philosophical Stance Against Having Children
✽ Growing up in the atheistic milieu of China’s Cultural Revolution, my dad has always believed that death is the end. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when people around him began dying, he hired a lawyer and planned for his own life’s conclusion. When I finally saw him after three years of the pandemic, my dad had grown older, balder, and more impatient. He still thinks what matters is this life rather than the next, but he makes a concession for his grandchildren.
From Impostor Syndrome to Mentorship: How “WHAT” Shaped My Growth as an Engineer
Starting Out — and Feeling Lost I started my full stack software engineering career right out of college as a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed computer science graduate with terrible impostor syndrome. Who can relate? Between the firehose of onboarding information, a brand-new work environment, and an unfamiliar schedule, I felt completely overwhelmed.
Cross-domain Cookies: Building Less Annoying Consent Solutions
When I worked at IBM, we had a cookie preferences pop-up, as every company should: But there was a problem: whenever the user clicked a link that opened a page in another IBM-owned domain, that new domain had a different set of cookies and "forgot" what the user chose in their cookie dialogue. While it may seem like a minor annoyance, it ultimately did factor into bounce rates.
Why You're Spending Too Much Money on Datadog Metrics
As a kid, I had the annoying habit of turning lights on in the house and forgetting to turn them off. My dad had to lecture me a few times about how electricity costs money and how I was wasting it. Today, I don't leave the lights on anymore. However, I found myself involved in a different kind of waste. As an SRE at Indeed, the first project I tackled was to reduce our Datadog spend.
The Lonely Moralists
Blue grotto, Capri Island, Italy(ca. 1890–1900) | Library of Congress, Prints & Photographs Division, LC-DIG-ppmsc-06435 / PD US On May 17, 2025, Guy Bartkus drove out to a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California, and set off an explosive that killed himself and injured four others. Learning of this news, Bartkus’s father told media that the man who attacked the clinic was not the person he remembers.

Is not having children selfish, a ‘moral failing’? Anti-natalists explain why it’s an ethical choice

Anti-natalists Have an Image Problem

When I met him for the first time in Ikebukuro, Japan, he promised to take me to his favorite place in the city, which turned out to be a cemetery. As we wound our way between graves, Asagi stepped carefully, holding his camera and soaking in the landscape. “It’s calm and peaceful,” he explained. “And there are cats here.” Death does not disturb Asagi.

Materializing rival ground states in the barlowite family of kagome magnets: quantum spin liquid, spin ordered, and valence bond crystal states
Abstract The spin-\(\frac{1}{2}\) kagome antiferromagnet is considered an ideal host for a quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state. We find that when the bonds of the kagome lattice are modulated with a periodic pattern, new quantum ground states emerge. Newly synthesized crystalline barlowite (Cu4(OH)6FBr) and Zn-substituted barlowite demonstrate the delicate interplay between singlet states and spin order on the spin-\(\frac{1}{2}\) kagome lattice.
'Counter-Cyclical' Adjustment Factor Resumed To Anchor Chinese Currency
The People's Bank of China (PBOC) announced on August 24 that China's CNY fixing reporting banks have resumed the counter-cyclical adjustment (CCA) factor in the CNY official midpoint this month. This is the second move of Chinese authorities after the adoption of a 20% reserve requirement of FX forward positions on August 3.

Proactive Fiscal Policy To Be More Proactive: Takeaways From China's State Council Executive Meeting On July 23, 2018
On July 23, 2018, China's state council executive meeting hosted by Premier Li Keqiang announced that fiscal and monetary policy will be further fine-tuned to boost domestic demand. The meeting reiterated that China will strike a balance between "easing and tightening" and keep liquidity "reasonable and sufficient." It was also stressed that China will not resort to outright stimulus. Furthermore, clearing "zombie enterprises" and related invalid capital were also mentioned.
Quality Over Quantity: China's Economic Growth Focus In 2018 - Part 2
After the Central Economic Work Conference (CEWC), specific plans and targets have been set for China's economy. What are the investment opportunities following the CEWC? To achieve high-quality development, the government will promote consumption and private investment to drive growth. Rural reform targeting to alleviate poverty, such as restoring land use rights to farmers, could also unlock rural land wealth of US$20 trillion and hence boost rural consumption.
Quality Over Quantity: China's Economic Growth Focus In 2018 - Part 1
The Central Economic Work Conference (CEWC) was held in Beijing on 18-20 December, 2017. As the first CEWC after the 19th Party Congress, it set the tone for China's central government's economic policies in 2018. They are crucial to the long-term development of the world's second-largest economy. CEWC emphasized the quality of the economic development over specific GDP targets.
