Keeping Faith with the Voters Who Kept Faith with Us
There are moments when a decision is about more than the decision itself. The Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee is once again considering which states should open our presidential nominating process. On paper, this is a debate about a calendar. I believe it is about much more. It is about who we are as a Democratic Party. It is about whether the coalition we depend on to win elections has a meaningful voice in choosing our nominees.
When ‘Electability’ Is the Excuse
There’s a line in Democratic politics that is often repeated. It is amplified at conventions, mentioned in donor meetings, and printed on PowerPoint slides like it is a settled fact. “Black women are the backbone of the Democratic Party.” Those words usually carry a tone of admiration and sometimes even reverence. But there’s also an unspoken rule that comes with it. The praise is fine. The power is not.

Opinion | South Carolina Republicans reject Nikki Haley’s version of MAGA for the original version
The results of the South Carolina Republican primary election have made one thing perfectly clear: Former President Donald Trump’s MAGA extremism has taken over the Republican Party. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley tried her hardest to spin her record and position herself as a moderate, but South Carolinians, who know Haley and her record better than anyone, didn’t buy what she was selling.

Opinion | Republicans are not on your side
The past two years have been challenging for our nation. They have put immense pressure on working people all across the country. These past two years have also revealed the priorities of our elected officials. These priorities are essential for every voter to know heading into the 2022 midterms. Democrats have worked tirelessly to address the everyday needs of the American people. Republicans have done little more than show up — and in the case of Sen. Ted Cruz, even that is not always a given.

Recommitting Ourselves to Making “Good Trouble”
When I was a young staff member on the Hill, my office was right next to Congressman Lewis’ office. I would often sit on his couch and admire the photos he had on his wall — photos of him alongside titans like Dr. King, Fannie Lou Hamer, A. Philip Randolph and so many others. They were reminders that Congressman Lewis didn’t just witness history. He shaped it. He shaped it on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, at the March on Washington and in meeting halls and churches across the country.

Court Bends Over Backward to Disenfranchise Voters of Color
On Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled on Brnovich v. DNC and once again set back voting rights in the United States. In 2016, the Democratic National Committee sued the state of Arizona over two restrictive voting laws. One law automatically tossed out votes that were cast in the wrong precinct. The other law made third-party ballot collection — a practice that communities of color rely on in Arizona — illegal.

Keeping My Word to South Carolina
When I was a boy, my grandfather taught me, “Jaime, a man is only as good as his word.” My grandfather faced a lot of challenges in life, and he understood what it meant to have character. He understood that your word doesn’t just say a lot about you; it says everything about you.
I’m Not a Superhero. I’m A South Carolinian.
As a kid, I dreamed about being a superhero, and I learned to read from comic books. To me, superheroes could do anything. They always did what was right, and always saved the day. In America right now, we need superheroes now more than ever. Over 7,000,000 Americans have fallen sick from the Coronavirus. The virus has taken the lives of over 200,000 Americans. That includes over 3,000 of our fellow South Carolinians, and my great-aunt. Unfortunately, no superhero is coming to save the day.
The Next COVID Bill Must Fix The PPP, Finally Lift Up Black-Owned Businesses
By Jaime Harrison · September 9, 2020September 8, 2020 The Paycheck Protection Program was designed to help keep small business employees on the payrolls during this economic downturn. It was supposed to help small businesses from going under, and lift up workers across the country. Unfortunately, that’s not what we got here in South Carolina. This program didn’t just fail here: South Carolina ranks 50th in the country in the amount of PPP loans granted per worker.
What S.C. families need from the next COVID relief bill
Just last week, over 800,000 new unemployment claims were filed in the United States, a staggering statistic that reflects the toll of the coronavirus on our economy. South Carolina has especially been hit hard by the pandemic: Over 118,000 confirmed cases. Over 2,600 deaths. Our state has the seventh most cases per capita, and 20 percent of tests are coming back positive. My hometown hospital in Orangeburg got so full that the National Guard had to build a medical tent outside of it.

This Fight Isn’t Over. Here’s How We Can Finally Beat COVID-19 in South Carolina.
Here in South Carolina and across this country, we are facing down a health crisis. One which affects all of us. Last weekend, I personally lost my grandaunt, Gladys, to the coronavirus. We’ve seen too much tragedy. We’ve hit the grim milestone of over 1,000 COVID related deaths in our state alone. Just one death is too many. We’re breaking case records here on a near-daily basis. We’ve gone from 13 percent positive a month ago to 21 percent positive today.
Representation Matters: Black Senate Candidates Explain Why They Are Seizing The Moment
Published 48 minutes ago Written by Jaime Harrison, Mike Espy and Raphael Warnock Although much focus is on the two white men vying for the presidency, local elections in 2020 will make a huge difference in the lives of Americans and the current racial climate will need to be addressed by the next group of people who take office in Congress.
BET: Representation Matters: Black Senate Candidates Explain Why They Are Seizing The Moment
By Jaime Harrison, Mike Espy and Raphael Warnock The marches in recent weeks have extended far past the city limits of places like Charleston, Atlanta and Jackson. In the Deep South, the calls for equality and equity in the way law enforcement treats American citizens have ricocheted from state to state — from the quiet streets of rural towns like Loganville, Georgia and Petal, Mississippi, to the glittering metropolises that drive Southern economies.

Commentary: Virus-stricken SC can't get caught flat-footed during hurricane season
We are no strangers to hurricanes in South Carolina. These storms are part of life, especially in the Lowcountry and all along our coast. I was in middle school when Hurricane Hugo hit in 1989. I still remember the sounds from that night and the challenges of recovering. We are less than two weeks away from what likely will not be a normal hurricane season.

Coronavirus funds must help South Carolinians who work hard but still struggle
The coronavirus has the potential to cause widespread economic damage in South Carolina and across the country; this week alone stocks have suffered historically bad trading days. Yet Washington officials are already rushing to aid large companies with tax breaks instead of protecting the people they are elected to represent. Each day I think about my grandparents who raised me in a little house in Orangeburg.

Why I’m Running for Senate.
Growing up in Orangeburg, I didn’t know that I lived in the “corridor of shame.” I was the son of a single mom who learned to read from comic books. My grandparents helped raise me. They didn’t have a lot, but my grandparents taught me the important stuff: that hard work and character, matter. When I got my acceptance (and scholarship) to college, it felt like a dream come true. I headed off to Yale, and eventually Georgetown Law, but I never forgot where I came from.
