Abstract Antibiotics have deleterious consequences for the gut microbiome and can increase the risk of childhood asthma. While the effects of antibiotics on the bacterial microbiome and asthma risk are well characterized, their impact on the fungal microbiome (mycobiome) remains vastly unexplored. We investigated the effect of antibiotic use on the gut mycobiome in an observational, prospective clinical study of young infants.

Abstract Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF, Csf2) is a potent proinflammatory cytokine1. At steady state, however, GM-CSF has a distinct homeostatic function, being essential for the differentiation and maintenance of alveolar macrophages2,3,4,5. Whether macrophage development in nonpulmonary tissues is similarly dependent on GM-CSF is unclear. Here we examine developing tissues of GM-CSF fate-mapping and reporter mice6.

Dysbiosis of a microbiota–immune metasystem in critical illness is associated with nosocomial infections - Nature Medicine

Abstract Critically ill patients in intensive care units experience profound alterations of their gut microbiota that have been linked to a high risk of hospital-acquired (nosocomial) infections and adverse outcomes through unclear mechanisms. Abundant mouse and limited human data suggest that the gut microbiota can contribute to maintenance of systemic immune homeostasis, and that intestinal dysbiosis may lead to defects in immune defense against infections.
