Asymmetric bloom lengthening drives high-latitude ocean chlorophyll accumulation imbalance
Abstract Terrestrial ecosystems maintain a stable time-allocation budget between growth and senescence, but whether this applies to the ocean remains unclear. Using fused satellite LiDAR and ocean-color data (2007–2022), we show that marine phenology is variable and asymmetric. In high latitudes ( > 50°N), the bloom growth-to-decline ratio (RGD) is declining by ~5.3% per decade.
Loop-Centric Engineering of Terminal Deoxynucleotidyl Transferase for Enhanced Catalysis of 3'-Modified Nucleotides
1 Introduction Active-site loops are key regulators of enzyme functional diversity (Kreß et al. 2018). These dynamic regions often gate substrate access, stabilize transition states, and orchestrate the conformational changes required for catalysis (Corbella et al. 2023; Papaleo et al. 2016). Consequently, subtle sequence variations within active-site loops can profoundly alter substrate specificity, catalytic efficiency, and even reaction mechanisms (Nestl and Hauer 2014; Song et al. 2025).

Threefold increase in atmospheric–riverine compound heatwaves under climate change
|
BY Record-breaking heatwaves disrupt global water, energy and food systems, yet the co-occurrence of atmospheric and riverine events remains largely unexplored. Here we analyse 796 river basins in the USA and Central Europe to characterize such co-occurring atmospheric–riverine compound heatwaves. Combining water quality observations with a deep learning model, we find that compound heatwaves have increased by about 0.40 events per decade since the 1980s.

Impact attribution of anthropogenic forcing on lake surface temperature
Abstract Global lakes are important sources of freshwater, supporting biodiversity and providing vital ecosystem services. While widespread lake surface warming has been well-documented, formal attribution of this trend to specific anthropogenic drivers has remained out of reach. Here, we provide the attribution of global lake surface warming to human activities using a dataset that integrates satellite-constrained lake temperature estimates with climate model simulations.

Substantially underestimated winter CO2 sources of the Southern Ocean
Abstract The size and control mechanism of the Southern Ocean’s carbon fluxes remain highly uncertain due to sparse winter observations. Here, we integrate satellite light detection and ranging (LIDAR) measurements with machine learning to assess the Southern Ocean air-sea CO2 fluxes between 2007 and 2020. We reveal that CO2 outgassing south of 50°S was underestimated by up to 40% in previous studies.

The impact of extreme heat on lake warming in China - Nature Communications
Abstract Global lake ecosystems are subjected to an increased occurrence of heat extremes, yet their impact on lake warming remains poorly understood. In this study, we employed a hybrid physically-based/statistical model to assess the contribution of heat extremes to variations in surface water temperature of 2260 lakes in China from 1985 to 2022. Our study indicates that heat extremes are increasing at a rate of about 2.08 days/decade and an intensity of about 0.03 °C/ day·decade in China.
