Tree diversity is changing across tropical Andean and Amazonian forests in response to global change - Nature Ecology & Evolution
|
Abstract Climate and atmospheric changes are impacting forest function and structure worldwide, but their effects on tropical forest diversity are unclear. Nowhere is the scientific challenge greater than in the Andes and the Amazon, which together include the world’s most diverse forests. Here, using 406 permanent plots spanning four decades of intact lowland and montane forest dynamics, we test for long-term change in species richness and assess the influence of climate and other variables.

BMAL1 and ARNT enable circadian HIF2α responses in clear cell renal cell carcinoma - Nature Communications
Abstract Circadian disruption enhances cancer risk, and many tumors exhibit disordered circadian gene expression. We show rhythmic gene expression is unexpectedly robust in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). The core circadian transcription factor BMAL1 is closely related to ARNT, and we show that BMAL1-HIF2α regulates a subset of HIF2α target genes in ccRCC cells.
SWI/SNF ATPase silenced HLF potentiates lung metastasis in solid cancers - Nature Communications
Abstract Metastasis is the main cause of cancer-related deaths, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here, using clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), a tumor type with frequent lung metastases, we conduct an in vivo genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9 screen and identify HLF as a potent suppressor of lung metastasis. HLF depletion enhances ccRCC cell migration and lung metastasis, whereas HLF overexpression abrogates these effects.

Nuclear speckles regulate functional programs in cancer - Nature Cell Biology
Abstract Nuclear speckles are dynamic nuclear bodies characterized by high concentrations of factors involved in RNA production. Although the contents of speckles suggest multifaceted roles in gene regulation, their biological functions are unclear. Here we investigate speckle variation in human cancer, finding two main signatures. One speckle signature was similar to healthy adjacent tissues, whereas the other was dissimilar, and considered an aberrant cancer speckle state.

Is Arab hatred for Israel a product of the child abuse normative in the Arab world?
Two months after the October 7th attacks on Israel, I wrote that the murderous rage the attackers expressed is probably not the result of any political issue, but, most likely, it was displaced anger/rage from child abuse. As a former abused child (beatings)—former because I gave up the anger—I'm very familiar with the feelings of rage and nihilism it provides. Those feelings were never directed against my father (when he gave up the anger, we reconciled) but against the world.

Disrupting cellular memory to overcome drug resistance - Nature Communications
Abstract Gene expression states persist for varying lengths of time at the single-cell level, a phenomenon known as gene expression memory. When cells switch states, losing memory of their prior state, this transition can occur in the absence of genetic changes. However, we lack robust methods to find regulators of memory or track state switching. Here, we develop a lineage tracing-based technique to quantify memory and identify cells that switch states.
Drug Dispensing and the Caregiver
One of the common issues that caregivers have to deal with on a daily basis is the need to dispense their care recipient’s medication in a safe and timely fashion. Navigating the dangerous waters of different pill sizes, colors and dosages can be an intimidating experience as most family members and home care workers possess neither an in-depth knowledge of these medications nor the ability to discern when a problem with the pills may be developing.

Activation of γ-globin expression by hypoxia-inducible factor 1α - Nature
Abstract Around birth, globin expression in human red blood cells (RBCs) shifts from γ-globin to β-globin, which results in fetal haemoglobin (HbF, α2γ2) being gradually replaced by adult haemoglobin (HbA, α2β2)1. This process has motivated the development of innovative approaches to treat sickle cell disease and β-thalassaemia by increasing HbF levels in postnatal RBCs2.

Hypoxia-Inducible Factors in Cancer
Cancer Research Landmarks Laura C. Kim and M. Celeste Simon DOI: 10.1158/0008-5472.CAN-21-3780 Published January 2022 Abstract Low oxygen concentrations (hypoxia) are detrimental to most species on Earth; thus, cells have evolved with adaptations allowing them to withstand transient hypoxia. As with other survival pathways, cancer cells have co-opted these mechanisms to keep up with the metabolic demands of rapid growth and proliferation in harsh tumor microenvironments.
Moonlighting functions of metabolic enzymes and metabolites in cancer
The growing field of tumor metabolism has greatly expanded our knowledge of metabolic reprogramming in cancer. Apart from their established roles, various metabolic enzymes and metabolites harbor non-canonical (“moonlighting”) functions to support malignant transformation.
Sphingolipids as critical players in retinal physiology and pathology
Abstract Sphingolipids have emerged as bioactive lipids involved in the regulation of many physiological and pathological processes. In the retina, they have been established to participate in numerous processes, such as neuronal survival and death, proliferation and migration of neuronal and vascular cells, inflammation, and neovascularization. Dysregulation of sphingolipids is therefore crucial in the onset and progression of retinal diseases.
