Age modifies the association between body composition and S1P levels in the study of health in pomerania
Abstract To investigate whether age modifies the associations between body composition markers and sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) levels in the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP) cohort. Among 4,080 participants (2,275 women, 51.4%), we examined age-specific associations of anthropometric (BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio) and MRI-derived (visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue, liver fat) body-composition markers with S1P.
Linking circulating chemerin and adiponectin to lipoprotein subclasses measured by 1 H-NMR spectroscopy in 3199 participants from the study of health in Pomerania
Abstract Associations between adiponectin and chemerin with the most clinically established lipid parameters for assessing cardiovascular risk - LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides—are well documented. Since lipoproteins are heterogeneous with respect to size, density, and chemical composition, the examination of their subclasses could help to elucidate the complex interactions between adipokines and lipid metabolism.
Autoantibodies to IL-1Ra and PGRN in severe COVID-19 are associated with inflammation-induced hyperphosphorylated antigen isoforms
|
Abstract SARS-CoV-2 infection affects multiple immune mechanisms and leads to severe COVID-19 and death, in part related to infection-induced or pre-existing autoantibodies. Here, we describe severe COVID-19 to associate with autoantibodies against interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) and progranulin (PGRN), endogenous antagonists of IL-1 and TNF signaling, respectively.

Comparison of all-cause mortality risk factors in a population-based cohort study
Abstract All-cause mortality is a population health indicator of the combined impact of biological, behavioral, social, and healthcare-related factors. We used data from 3,803 participants (1,947 women, 51.2%; aged 20 to 81 years) of the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP-START-0, 1997–2001), with a median follow-up duration of 20.2 years.
The relationship between age related changes in strength and fitness with body size, shape and composition - Scientific Reports
Abstract Handgrip strength (HGS), cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and body size, shape, and composition are all related to cardiometabolic health and are associated in cross-sectional settings. Their longitudinal relationship is less clear. We used observational data from the Study of Health in Pomerania at baseline (SHIP-TREND-0; 2008–2012) and follow-up (SHIP-TREND-1; 2016–2019) with 1,214 men and 1,293 women. HGS was measured with a hand dynamometer.

Distinct genetic liability profiles define clinically relevant patient strata across common diseases - Nature Communications
Abstract Stratified medicine holds great promise to tailor treatment to the needs of individual patients. While genetics holds great potential to aid patient stratification, it remains a major challenge to operationalize complex genetic risk factor profiles to deconstruct clinical heterogeneity. Contemporary approaches to this problem rely on polygenic risk scores (PRS), which provide only limited clinical utility and lack a clear biological foundation.

Combined telemonitoring and telecoaching for heart failure improves outcome - npj Digital Medicine
Abstract Telemedicine has been shown to improve the outcome of heart failure (HF) patients in addition to medical and device therapy. We investigate the effectiveness of a comprehensive telehealth programme in patients with recent hospitalisation for HF on subsequent HF hospitalisations and mortality compared to usual care in a real-world setting. The telehealth programme consists of daily remote telemonitoring of HF signs/symptoms and regular individualised telecoaching sessions.

Method details Populations The full RHR meta-analysis included 100 studies with data on RHR in up to 835,465 individuals. RHR was obtained from ECG in 54 studies, from pulse rate in 31 studies (of which seven were self-measured by the participants), from blood pressure monitor in nine studies, from electronic medical records in three studies, from manual measurement in one study and through a combination of multiple of the before mentioned methods in two studies.

Genome-wide association analyses of physical activity and sedentary behavior provide insights into underlying mechanisms and roles in disease prevention | Nature Genetics
|
Abstract Although physical activity and sedentary behavior are moderately heritable, little is known about the mechanisms that influence these traits. Combining data for up to 703,901 individuals from 51 studies in a multi-ancestry meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies yields 99 loci that associate with self-reported moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity during leisure time (MVPA), leisure screen time (LST) and/or sedentary behavior at work.

Genome-wide associations of aortic distensibility suggest causality for aortic aneurysms and brain white matter hyperintensities - Nature Communications
Abstract Aortic dimensions and distensibility are key risk factors for aortic aneurysms and dissections, as well as for other cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. We present genome-wide associations of ascending and descending aortic distensibility and area derived from cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data of up to 32,590 Caucasian individuals in UK Biobank.
Association of familial history of diabetes or myocardial infarction and stroke with risk of cardiovascular diseases in four German cohorts
Abstract Since family history of diabetes is a very strong risk factor for type 2 diabetes, which is one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD), it might be also useful to assess the risk for CVD. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between a familial (parents and siblings) history of diabetes and the risk of incident CVD.

Pitfalls in accelerometer-based measurement of physical activity: The presence of reactivity in an adult population
When a behavior is monitored, it is likely to change, even if no change may be intended. This phenomenon is known as measurement reactivity. We investigated systematic changes in accelerometer-based measures over the days of monitoring as an indicator of measurement reactivity in an adult population.
