Prognostic value of 48-h reassessment of a laboratory-derived frailty index in ICU patients with sepsis: model development in MIMIC-IV and external transport evaluation
Abstract Background: Static laboratory-derived frailty index (FI-lab) measures have been associated with adverse outcomes in sepsis, but the value of reassessing acute multisystem laboratory abnormality burden after initial resuscitation and transporting a prespecified model to a new clinical setting remains uncertain.
Engineering bamboo as a multiscale platform for carbon-negative materials
Abstract Carbon-negative materials are increasingly central to credible net-zero strategies; however, their climate benefits depend on transparent life-cycle boundaries, realistic end-of-life scenarios and carbon storage. Bamboo is a fast-growing lignocellulosic resource that combines high biomass productivity with the ability to sequester atmospheric carbon in long-lived materials.
A light for fostering diversity and justice in curriculum theorizing and praxis
Abstract Racial violence in US K-12 schools is often perpetuated by curricular distortion and erasure of the histories and heritages of people of Color. In this article, we, two former students of Geneva Gay and one curriculum scholar, illuminate how Geneva Gay’s five decades of research and scholarship have served as a beacon of hope for fostering diversity and justice in curriculum theorizing and praxis.
Biomimetic ferroelectric-semiconductor transistor enables neuronal multisensory integration
Abstract Human brain seamlessly integrates multisensory stimuli to synthesize complementary information for enhanced perceptions, depending on neural principles of superadditivity, inverse effectiveness, and temporal congruency. Replicating multisensory integration in artificial intelligences has remained challenging due to the inefficiency of algorithmic fusions and the absence of hardware-native mechanisms.
Bispecific Antibody Ivonescimab Added to Chemotherapy in EGFR -Variant Non–Small Cell Lung Cancer : The HARMONi-A Randomized Clinical Trial
|
Key Points Question Does adding ivonescimab to chemotherapy improve overall survival in patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene variant non–small cell lung cancer after disease progression with EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy? Findings In this phase 3, randomized, double-blind trial, ivonescimab plus chemotherapy significantly improved overall survival (median, 16.8 vs 14.1 months) and the 30-month survival rate (29.1% vs 18.4%) compared with chemotherapy alone.

Diagnosis and investigation of infertility causes in two female giant pandas using multimodal techniques: a case report
Abstract Background: The advancement of artificial insemination techniques for giant pandas has significantly enhanced their breeding success. However, some pandas continue to experience difficulties in conceiving naturally, necessitating a thorough investigation into the underlying causes of infertility. This study aimed to perform pre-pregnancy examinations and diagnose infertility causes on giant pandas with infertility.
Intestinal microbiome gone native: gut microbiome shift and resistome diversity in first homecoming giant panda family
Abstract Introduction: The world-famous giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) often travel abroad for public exhibitions and international scientific cooperations. Previous research has reported alternations in the gut microbiome structure and enrichment of gut antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) in human international travelers, the latter of which is harmful to native residents and the environment.

Characterizations of Protein Arginine Deiminase 1 as a Substrate of NTMT1: Implications of Nα-Methylation in Protein Stability and Interaction
Introduction Click to copy section linkSection link copied! Nα-methylation is a type of post-translational modification catalyzed by protein N-terminal methyltransferases (NTMTs), featuring the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosyl-l-methionine (SAM) to the N-terminal α-amino group of substrate proteins (Figure 1A). There are three enzymes identified for Nα-methylation, including NTMT1, NTMT2, and METTL13.
Smooth Muscle Cells-Expressed Bmal1 Regulates Vascular Calcification Independent of the Canonical Circadian Pathway
Abstract Vascular calcification is a major cardiovascular issue that increases morbidity and mortality in diabetes patients. While dysregulation of the circadian master regulator Basic Helix-Loop-Helix ARNT-Like Protein 1 (Bmal1) in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) under diabetic conditions has been suggested, its role in vascular calcification is unclear. In VSMC, Bmal1 was upregulated under high glucose treatment and in aortic tissues from a diabetic mouse model.

Vascular Endothelium: More than just a simple barrier
Our blood vessels are lined with a single layer of endothelial cells, known as the vascular endothelium, which provides a permeable barrier to protect the blood from toxins and other harmful substances. Endothelial cells have many important roles, including regulating the contraction and relaxation of the blood vessels, enabling exchange of molecules between blood and tissues, and regulating immune response and inflammation.

Assessing airborne transmission risks in COVID-19 hospitals by systematically monitoring SARS-CoV-2 in the air
INTRODUCTION The continuous emergence of highly infectious SARS-CoV-2 variants capable of evasion from the vaccine and antibody-mediated immune responses attracted attention worldwide, attaching the great importance of risk assessment and management for preventing coronavirus transmission (1–3). Droplet and fomite transmission of SARS-CoV-2 alone could not account for the numerous super-spreading events caused by newly emerged variants (4, 5).

Manipulation of components of the renin angiotensin system in renal proximal tubules fails to alter atherosclerosis in hypercholesterolemic mice
Introduction Angiotensin II (AngII) is the principal bioactive peptide of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), which is produced from angiotensinogen (AGT) through sequential cleavage by renin and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). AngII is a potent contributor to atherosclerosis through binding to AngII type 1 receptor (AT1R in humans and AT1aR in mice). Sex differences in atherosclerosis have been noted in previous studies (1).
SIRT2 regulates extracellular vesicle-mediated liver–bone communication - Nature Metabolism
Abstract The interplay between liver and bone metabolism remains largely uncharacterized. Here, we uncover a mechanism of liver-bone crosstalk regulated by hepatocyte SIRT2. We demonstrate that hepatocyte SIRT2 expression is increased in aged mice and elderly humans. Liver-specific SIRT2 deficiency inhibits osteoclastogenesis and alleviates bone loss in mouse models of osteoporosis.
