From public service to partnership
What follows is the speech given by Patrick Gorman to the Sydney Institute on February 24. The future of the Australian Public Service is on the ballot at this election. Tonight, I argue that all Australians, especially conservatives, should cherish our public service. Peter Dutton has put public service cuts front and centre of the imminent campaign. I am happy to have that fight. The values of public service run deep in my family. My parents were both primary school teachers.
'FROM SERVANT TO PARTNER' SPEECH TO THE SYDNEY INSTITUTE — Patrick Gorman MP
The future of the Australian Public Service is on the ballot at this election. Tonight I argue that all Australians, especially conservatives, should cherish our public service. Peter Dutton has put public service cuts front and centre of the imminent campaign. I am happy to have that fight. The values of public service run deep in my family. My parents were both primary school teachers. My grandmother Pat worked in administration at WA Health.
Patrick Gorman: WA faces crucial elections; choose wisely for our future Original
This year West Australians will vote three times. A festival of democracy in our own backyard. In the next few months, we will vote in State and Federal elections. If that is not enough, there are also local government elections on October 18. The secret is that not all politicians love elections. But I do. Australian elections are at the heart of our egalitarian ideals. That anyone can make a contribution and that we all have a say in our future. West Australians have some big decisions ahead of them.
Patrick Gorman: Medicare more Aussie than Vegemite (and a crowdpleaser too) Original
Struggling to get a full breath. Every night with a nebuliser. Spending hours with doctors as I struggled with asthma. I was a chronic asthmatic as a child spending far too long at Fremantle Hospital and at my local GP Dr David Nelson’s clinic on Canning Highway. Thankfully, thanks to Australia’s health system, asthma doesn’t bother me much these days. Medicare and I both have our 40th birthdays this year. We both have a bit to celebrate. Medicare is now more Australian than Vegemite. It is the fair go.
St. Ambrose Academy dedicates sacred space to St. Joan of Arc in new home
A new sacred space in the Diocese of Madison is now filled with the Presence of Jesus Christ, laying a rich foundation for the seeds of faith to blossom among the students at St. Ambrose Academy. On September 5, Bishop Donald J. Hying of Madison solemnly processed with the Most Blessed Sacrament for the first time into the St. Joan of Arc Oratory, located within the new halls of St. Ambrose Academy at Holy Name Heights in Madison.
Patrick Gorman: Nuke plan truth in Perth’s City skyline
On the drive back from Collie last week it struck me just why Peter Dutton’s nuclear plan is so concerning for West Australians. Heading home on the Kwinana Freeway after a day of talking to energy workers and community leaders in Collie I saw our city skyline. The names of Australia’s largest resource companies illuminate Perth.
Arizona Court of Appeals Clarifies Statute of Limitations for UIM Claims | JD Supra
State Farm v. Frank Arizona Court of Appeals In State Farm v. Frank, the Arizona Court of Appeals issued a published opinion regarding the application of A.R.S. § 12-555, which describes the statute of limitations for underinsured motorist (“UIM”) claims. In Frank, the insured was rear ended by another driver who maintained the state minimum insurance liability limits. Frank then made a claim with State Farm for UIM coverage under his personal auto policy and personal umbrella policy.
Taking the State of the Service on the road
The most entrenched problems in public policy and democracy can take very little time to create. They might start with someone secretly swearing themselves into a portfolio, or five. Or a significant Centrelink debt being automatically, incorrectly created. Or deciding that a high-risk Government contract should be awarded without due diligence. Or even deciding that a certain piece of public service work could just as easily be done by a contractor, rather than a public servant.

Patrick Gorman: When circumstances change, so too must government policy Original
Tax policy has always been a topic of discussion in my family. While my mum and dad were working as teachers, it was my great-grandmother, Lucy, who looked after me as a child. Lucy had worked at the Australian Tax Office for decades. Working when women were systematically paid less than men, and the tax free threshold was just 100 pounds. She was a proud public servant who helped war widows like herself get the support they needed.
Patrick Gorman: In 2024 the Albanese Government will continue working for WA Original
Travelling at 143km/h, GM1 was the first interstate diesel locomotive in Australia. It connected Perth to Sydney and now sits proudly in the Railway Museum in Bassendean. It was hard to describe to the kids during our summer visit just how big an impact this “Federation Train” had on the economy of Western Australia. In decades past it was these trains that took parliamentarians to Canberra. Taking the voice of the west to the east coast-based halls of power.
APS graduates end one journey and start a new one: Patrick Gorman’s speech
Here is Patrick Gorman’s address to the 2023 graduate class of the APS Academy Graduate Development Program, delivered on December 6. (Acknowledgements omitted) Graduates of the Australian Public Service Graduate Development Program, it is my great pleasure to share this memorable occasion with you. Congratulations to each and every one of you on successfully completing the APS GDP. Today marks the end of one journey, and also the start of a new one.
REDSTONE ROUNDTABLE: Explosives training graduates use lessons in real world
Boom… what’s all the noise about? The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives National Center for Explosives Training and Research has been operating on Redstone Arsenal since 2008 after transferring from Fort Walker-Bowling Green, Virginia. ATF’s arson and explosives training on Redstone Arsenal serves to educate and prepare crime scene investigators with critical and necessary skill sets.
Patrick Gorman: Unity is our greatest strength
Australians are stronger when we work together. We see that during fires, floods and moments of human tragedy.
The Voice Vote and Violence in the Middle East - Q+A
This week on Q+A… Australia after the referendum. On Saturday the nation voted not to enshrine an Indigenous Voice to Parliament in the Constitution. So what comes next? And what does it mean for First Nations people? Meanwhile, the eyes of the world are on the Middle East, as Israel strikes back against the deadly attacks by Hamas, vowing that Gaza “will never return to what it was”. With a ground offensive looming, it’s feared the conflict could leader to a wider war in the region.
Patrick Gorman: The Voice is our best chance to fix our broken system
When Western Australia voted to join the Federation in 1900 it was to deliver better outcomes by bringing people together. WA is again being asked to deliver better outcomes through our Constitution by bringing people together.
Patrick Gorman: From the City of Albany Aboriginal Accord to the Voice, how listening to people gets results
So often it is Western Australia’s regional communities that provide national leadership. New policy ideas, the businesses that power our exports, comfort in times of crisis. The story of Albany is a story of leading our State and enriching our nation. Twenty years ago, the City of Albany Aboriginal Accord was put into place. A commitment to recognise our history, listen, and work together for better results.
Patrick Gorman: Voice to Parliament opens a door to opportunity
Because our Constitution is not written in stone, unable to grow as our nation does. It is written by the vote of the Australian people. All Australians have to do is write three letters. Y-E-S.

Patrick Gorman: Looking back on the day WA led the way in electing an Albanese Government for a better future
Patrick GormanThe West Australian One year ago I was walking around in the dark, on the green at the Mt Lawley Bowling Club, staring at my phone. It was hard to believe the data I was seeing from our Labor team. Labor had campaigned well in the West, but the support from the people of WA was like nothing since Bob Hawke was prime minister. The Liberals had taken our State for granted for too long.
Patrick Gorman: Coronation a moment to reflect on our national identity Original
We love big things in Western Australia. We are proudly Australia’s largest State. We have the Super Pit. And today many of us will be glued to the world’s largest official ceremony of 2023. The coronation of King Charles III in Westminster Abbey will have a special resonance for WA. Along with our constitutional links, England is the most common birthplace of migrants to the West. It is meaningful for every Australian including longstanding monarchists, and for republicans like myself.
Go Make Disciples Live
It is not uncommon to encounter individuals in our Catholic communities who appear to be Catholics who just “go through the motions” and practice the faith out of obligation, without much thought. We may have heard friends and family say, or even believed ourselves, “I received my sacraments because I am Catholic and that is just what we do.” But our sacraments are actually moments of profound grace and encounter with our Lord.
Patrick Gorman: Albanese Government delivers successful engagement in Western Australia
Patrick GormanThe West Australian Opposition Leader Peter Dutton should consider a career as a magician. You can imagine the top hat, magic wand and travelling from town to town would suit him as he has clearly been working on his main trick — the disappearing act.

Arizona Supreme Court Addresses Depreciation of Labor Expenses When Determining Actual Cash Value of a Building Loss | JD Supra
Walker v. Auto-Owners Ins. Co. Arizona Supreme Court The Arizona Supreme Court recently issued an opinion on an issue that has split courts nationwide: may an insurer depreciate labor expenses when issuing an actual cash value payment (“ACV”) payment on a building loss? In Walker v. Auto Owners, the Court unanimously held that under the policy terms at issue, the insurer could not depreciate the cost of labor in determining the ACV for a covered loss.
Patrick Gorman: IR overhaul will rethink undervalued ‘women’s work’
Dust, drinks and gold fever filled the cold hall in Coolgardie where the WA Labor Party was founded on the afternoon of 11 April 1899. Not one woman was amongst the 28 men who formed what is now the WA Labor Party. They would not have imagined that 123 years later, the party they founded would send a majority of women parliamentarians to a place called Canberra as part of a Federal Labor Government.

Viewpoint: Ariz. Ruling Sets Standard for Aiding and Abetting Bad Faith Claims
The Arizona Court of Appeals recently analyzed a question that often plagues the removal of an insurance bad faith case to federal court: What is the standard to state a claim against an alleged aider and abettor of a bad faith claim? In Iglesia de Jesuscristo Minesterios v. Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company, the Court of Appeals held that conclusory allegations of bias and knowledge of the alleged tort by the aider and abettor were not insufficient to state a claim.

Building bridges in a divided world
“Ow! You twisted my arm!” my son complained to his sister. “No, I didn’t!” my daughter insisted. “Yes, you did!” was the retort. “Did not!” “Did too!” Mom could only take so much of this ping-pong arguing before yelling: “QUIET!” Once in a while, I must admit, these unfortunate arguments do happen in my household, as I’m sure they occur in many households.
May Memorial Day inspire us to work for peace
Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. For some, Memorial Day means the beginning of summer. For others, it is a day off to go shopping. The purpose of Memorial Day, however, is to honor military personnel who died while serving our country, particularly those who died in battle or from wounds received in battle. Jesus came to bring peace.

Arizona Appellate Court to Consider Standard for Aiding and Abetting Bad Faith Claims | JD Supra
Iglesia v. Brotherhood Arizona Court of Appeals April 12, 2022 In cases alleging bad faith against an insurance carrier, policyholders will often sue employee adjusters or contractors (independent adjusters, engineers, experts) of the insurance carrier in order to keep the case out of federal court. In a legal sense, policyholders sue the employee adjusters or contractors to defeat “diversity jurisdiction” necessary for the federal court to hear the case.
