In Portrait: Alfonso Cuarón, Sofia Coppola, Barry Jenkins, and More of the Directors Who Defined Our Age
Director’s CutHollywood 2019 An intimate look at the filmmakers who helped shape our last quarter century at the movies. These last two and a half decades have produced an abundance of indelible film moments, when cinema did its real searing, imprinting itself on us as if we had lived these scenes ourselves. That is largely thanks to work like that of the directors featured here, whose movies of 1995 and beyond awed, uplifted, wrecked, and inspired. Photograph by Peter Hapak.
How Kennedy's Swing Vote Made Him the 'Most Influential Person in American Life'
Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced Wednesday that he will retire in July — a decision that will leave the court without his pivotal swing vote and give President Donald Trump the opportunity to nominate a replacement who could shift the court further to the right. “It has been the greatest honor and privilege to serve our nation in the federal judiciary for 43 years, 30 of those years on the Supreme Court,” Kennedy, 81, said in a statement on Wednesday.
The Story Behind the 2018 TIME 100 Covers
Each year, the TIME 100 Most Influential People includes the artists, activists, leaders and visionaries whose work today will define the course of history in years to come. For 2018, TIME selected Tarana Burke, Roger Federer, Tiffany Haddish, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lopez and Satya Nadella to appear in a series of covers for the issue. TIME looked to portrait photographer Peter Hapak to immortalize these iconic figures inside the red border.
Men's Health 25th Anniversary Issue: Usher Cover
"I train like an athlete every day, believe it or not." We believe you, Usher. We met up with The Voice star at Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn this summer while he was in training for Hands of Stone, the upcoming movie in which Usher plays boxer Sugar Ray Leonard. Now, he's gracing the cover of the special 25th anniversary issue of Men's Health, on newsstands this month.
Kelela on Demystifying Music, Her Groupchats, and the Whiteness of Indie Rock
In November 2012, just two songs into recording her first mixtape, Kelela Mizanekristos rear-ended someone and totaled her car. The accident was non-life-threatening, but the then 28-year-old’s car was impounded and her license suspended due to an unpaid parking ticket. When she finally got her car out and got in touch with her insurance company, she found herself $5,000 richer than she’d been before the accident.

GQ Men of the Year 2017 Party: The Beautiful People Photos
GQ threw a little late-night bash to celebrate the men and women who made us feel a whole lot better about a very rough year. Armie Hammer came by the Chateau Marmont in L.A. for the soiree. So did his Call Me by Your Name co-star Timothée Chalamet, Emily Ratajkowski, Robert Pattinson, Kyle McLachlan, and many more.
Janet Yellen is on @TIME's list of the world's most influential people #TIME100
Janet Yellen, the first woman to hold what is often viewed as the most important and powerful economic position in the world, has wielded that power deftly, with a sure but steady hand, during an enormously difficult time. With a less skilled leader, the Fed might have become fractious and divided.
Gretchen Carlson is on @TIME's list of the world's most influential people #TIME100
Speaking truth to power is never easy. It's even harder when the whole country is watching. Gretchen Carlson's very public stand against Fox News blew the lid off a corporate culture that seemed to perpetuate sexual harassment—from the executive suite to the anchor desk. Gretchen had her own Howard Beale moment: she was mad as hell and she wasn't going to take it anymore. Her resolve led to the downfall of one of the most powerful men in media, Roger Ailes.
These Are Hollywood’s Outsiders
These Are Hollywood’s OutsidersThey steal scenes from stars. They’re dangerous even when they don’t play bad guys. These charismatic Hollywood misfits—including Mahershala Ali, BD Wong, Crispin Glover, and more—are the most unpredictable actors in the game.
Ben Foster, Brilliant Character Actor and Human Tofu
Searching for the man inside one of the best character actors in Hollywood. There’s a vast, garishly lit netherworld on YouTube where, were someone so inclined, he could find actors giving contractually obligated trade interviews on channels like EntertainmentHotline and CelebsInterviews. The questions are canned, the answers are rote, and, theoretically, a film is promoted.
How Tom Ford Turned a Nice Young Man into a Serial Killer
And other fun facts we learned during our Q&A with Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, 26, began his acting career specializing in portrayals of cerebral teens with rich inner lives (Nowhere Boy) before expanding into the roles of handsome superheroes and members of the armed forces with rich inner lives (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Godzilla).
How Jon Bernthal Became the Punisher
The Punisher star tells us about growing up with big ears, getting a gun pulled on him in Russia, and why Shia LaBeouf has the most beautiful soul in the world. I was born with these ginormous fucking earlobes, and the doctor suggested to my parents that we get elective plastic surgery. Like, who does that to a baby? Obviously my parents were like, “Fuck off.” But they were definitely very worried that I was going to be plauged. So yes, my looks have always been a source of embarrassment.
Crispin Glover On Just How Crazy He Isn't and Owning Peacocks
The eccentric icon talks to GQ about his reputation for being “psychotic” and the surprising affordability of Czech châteaus. The essential Crispin Glover question has always been: Where exactly does the character he’s playing end and the human being begin? Like, that monomaniacal character on-screen with the piercing stare and the brain that seems calibrated 17 degrees off of normal (the Charlie’s Angels movies, the upcoming Starz series American Gods).
Billy Crudup Finally Reveals How to Pronounce His Name
This fall, Billy Crudup talks about his scene-stealing roles in 20th Century Women and Jackie, and also reveals his hidden talent for carpentry. Billy Crudup first came to our attention in Almost Famous, playing the lead guitarist of Cameron Crowe’s fictional (but-so-perfectly-realized-you-had-to-do-a-double-take-to-make-sure-it-was-fictional) favorite band. 20th Century Women finds him stealing scenes as a go-with-the-flow handyman sucked into the riptides of the women around him.
Jesse Plemons Is the Worst Schmoozer in Hollywood
At 28, Plemons has gone highbrow (The Master) and lowbrow (Battleship) and appeared in your favorite prestige television (Friday Night Lights, Breaking Bad, Fargo). And yet he’s the rare actor that hates the one thing all actors are supposed to love: attention. We’re not talking for any particular reason. He’s got nothing to promote. GQ took his photo for a thing, so here we are. But do you need a reason to talk to Jesse Plemons? He’s 28 but has been acting, in one form or another, since he was a kid.
BD Wong Will Never Die
The perennial guest star talks about faking Mandarin for Mr. Robot and how disappearing will get you cast in a top-secret new Jurassic Park movie. In a show crammed with enigmas, Whiterose is Mr. Robot's sphinx. She's a hacker and a politician who schemes in Mandarin and lies in English. She wears a suit and tie to the office but is more comfortable at home in a fetching skirt set—not a character whose heels just any actor could fill.
How to Become a Marvel Villain and Oscar Front-runner
Moonlight and Luke Cage star Mahershala Ali fills us in on his secrets of success: patience and stubbornness. (Although being a rapper or pro wrestler won’t hurt you, either.) Mahershala Ali knew that he was a leading man before anyone else did. He’s been doing this a long time, he points out. “I have literally been acting for 23 years. And I’ve been a lead, like, twice.
We Asked Cuba Gooding Jr., Sarah Paulson, and the Rest of the 'People v. O.J.' Cast If O.J. Did It
Cuba Gooding, Jr., Courtney B. Vance, Sarah Paulson, and the rest of the Emmy-winning cast make their case. Cuba Gooding, Jr. (O.J. Simpson): I had an opinion when the trial came out that I didn’t care if he did it or not. I just didn’t want another black man railroaded. As I researched this role, I would go through all of the documentaries that proved his innocence, and all the documentaries that proved his guilt. And now I’m overrun with information from almost every perspective and point of view.
John Travolta Did the O.J. Show Because Oprah Gave Her Blessing
John Travolta arrives for his close-up camera-ready—a state of perfection he has attained without aid or interference from the squadron of makeup artists, fashion people, and on-set Ukrainian seamstress whose job today is to get John Travolta camera-ready for his close-up. He is ready even before anyone lays eyes on him—possibly before his private jet touches down on California concrete (piloted by himself), and certainly by the time he emerges from his luxury SUV (driven by someone else).

Tania Ganguli ESPN Staff Writer "We really feel like the move to add Brock gives us some stability," Texans GM Rick Smith says of the QB position. These additions give the Texans the ability to "stick to our guns" when it comes to the draft. And not draft based on need, which they don't like to do.

Washington Nationals' Bryce Harper wants to change baseball forever
HE WANTS TO change the game. He wants to change the perception of baseball players, to become a single-name icon like LeBron and Beckham and Cam. "I don't know much about Bryce," says his new manager, Dusty Baker, "but I know he's one of the hippest kids around." Harper wants to elevate his sport's profile through his play, through his fashion, through the charisma of his personality, maybe even through the fascination with the size of the first free agent contract ($400 million?

It's so toxic to just be hiding," Page, 28, said in the magazine's December cover story. "It becomes so consuming without you even knowing it's consuming you. Rachmaninoff and the Hypnotist
The writer Dave Malloy and the director Rachel Chavkin have found a magical wormhole between hipster Brooklyn and nineteenth-century Russia. In 2013, their immersive electro-pop musical “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812,” based on a swath of “War and Peace,” had an extended run in a pop-up supper club in the meatpacking district, complete with caviar and unsmiling Slavic waitresses.

Floyd Mayweather prepares for the May 2 fight that will seal his legacy
THE THERMOSTAT ON the wall reads 94, and the humidity created by all the sweat in the room makes the air feel rank and static, as if it's possible to breathe the exact same breath from the moment you enter to the moment you leave. A solid percentage of the people here today are lining the apron of the boxing ring, pounding their palms and fists onto the canvas with an insistence that goes beyond noise. It's like being trapped inside a bass drum in the middle of the tropics.
Alex Rodriguez's return to the New York Yankees
PEOPLE HATE HIM. Boy, wow, do they hate him. At first they loved him, and then they were confused by him, and then they were irritated by him, and now they straight-up loathe. More often than not, the mention of Alex Rodriguez in polite company triggers one of a spectrum of deeply conditioned responses. Pained ugh. Guttural groan. Exaggerated eye roll.
Girls cast on Tinder, Peter Pan, Rumors : People.com
Listening to Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet talk is a lot like watching an episode of Girls, their HBO comedy about four friends navigating postcollegiate life in New York City: Nothing is off limits, and nothing is dwelled upon for too long before the next topic of discussion arises. First there's Williams's recent turn as Peter Pan. "Wasn't she kind of hot?" asks Kirke. "I was ever so slightly worried about the ropes," says Mamet.
