Sampha on His New Album ‘Lahai’ and Becoming a Dad
Sampha speaks in sketches, drawing out the general idea he’s angling at and circling back to add color and texture. You quickly understand how it could take this person years to locate the perfect sequence of words to encapsulate a complicated feeling, as his debut album, Process, does: “A nemesis, an enemy / You’re the crack inside the screen”; “Smashed this window in my heart / And I blamed you.” He’s a details man.

Kendrick Lamar’s Life Lessons
Kendrick Lamar has been going through something—or so he announces in the opening lines of his latest album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers. In the 1,855 days after the release of his previous album, DAMN., which he refers to in the song “United in Grief,” he won seven Grammys and a Pulitzer, went on a four-year musical hiatus, had two children, and, if Mr. Morale is any indication, did a whole lot of soul-searching.
Naomi Campbell Stars in Self-Portrait’s "The Bow Is Mine" Campaign
London-based fashion brand self-portrait has unveiled its inaugural collection of handbags with the help of British icon Naomi Campbell. Inspired by the 90’s R&B classic, “The Boy Is Mine” by Brandy and Monica, the campaign pays homage to the era. Directed by the inimitable photographer Renell Medrano, the visuals feature Campbell conversing on her corded phone, letting the person on the other side know for certain that the Bow bag is hers and only hers.
Kendrick Lamar Leads the Way Toward Spiritual Progress on “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers”
On his fifth full-length, Kendrick takes a deep look in the mirror and challenges his audience to start doing the hard work on ourselves that we’ve been avoiding. We’re all different people than we were before COVID. For many of us, the changes have been radical. Stuck indoors, we started taking longer, harder looks at ourselves, and while the world outside spun increasingly out of control, we tried to regain a sense of groundedness through reinvention. We cut our hair or grew it out.

Ghetto Gastro’s guide to New York
In the mouth of Jon Gray, Ghetto Gastro’s CEO and founder, ghetto never felt so fabulous. They’re a “Black Power Kitchen”, who’ve masterminded events for everyone from Virgil Abloh to Rick Owens, Tom Sachs to Martha Stewart, Flying Lotus to Vic Mensa, The Serpentine to MoMA. They curate all aspects, from the venue to the DJs to the decor, with themes ranging from the Black Panther future-world of Wakanda to the colonisation and re-appropriation of the yam.
The Shugga Shower
CB — It’s the moments where you pause that are the most special and beautiful. Take it all in. That’s why we have to always remind each other, because it’s one or the other and often at the same time... We gotta just stop. You can’t stop for too long because you can’t fall behind, but you gotta stop for a second, take it all in, keep moving. And I think that’s how the story gets told, and that’s a big part of what Zach’s doing, and what’s being created right now.
Willow Smith Describes the Unique Scent of the Smith Household
In antiquity, fragrance was used as a tool of deception: Disease-stricken nobles would douse themselves in expensive scents to distract friends and loved ones from the odor of their rotting flesh. A few centuries later, the Bubonic Plague is less of a thing, but we still use fragrance to trick people into thinking we are sexy and woodsy or bubbly and floral, or simply that we bathe regularly.
These Skaters Were Discovered on the Subway and Now They’re in a Movie With Jaden Smith
“Are there more of you?” This question, posed by Crystal Moselle — the young director behind the upcoming Magnolia Pictures “Skate Kitchen” — was pointed to two seemingly random teenagers during a chance encounter on the New York City subway. With skateboards in hand, Rachelle Vinberg and Nina Moran were just the people Crystal was looking to enlist for a film she was working on with fashion brand Miu Miu later that year.
How to Tie a Durag, According to A$AP Ferg
The rapper reveals his technique for tying a durag and getting the waviest waves. Right around the time people started leaving the house with socks and slippers on, people also started wearing their durags in public—mainly black artists and athletes. Durags originally served as a way for black men to protect and style their hair overnight. Guys wore durags to keep their hair from getting messed up while sleeping. Men with cornrows wore durags to prevent friction, frizz, and flyaways.
How Gugu Mbatha-Raw Is Shattering Hollywood’s Glass Ceilings
There is the argument that casting a Black woman in a role that was originally written for a non-brown actress might be slightly easier with someone like Mbatha-Raw, who is light skin and appears ethnically ambiguous. There’s also the argument that when the entertainment industry focuses on simply slotting minorities into existing roles, it gets a pass on creating stories for and about people of color.
How To Be Male Ally Sexual Assault Harassment Survivors
We often refer to survivors “sharing their stories” about sexual violence. But men who have not experienced sexual violence have stories, too. And men’s untold and unanalysed stories inform our culture tremendously. Reflect privately on your experiences and your ideas. You might ask yourself some of the following questions: How did you grow up thinking about men, women, and nonbinary people? What was your family life like?
