INTRODUCTION Imagine adolescence as a bustling train station. Young passengers eagerly await a train, standing on platforms with a destination—Adulthood—hanging above them. For many in the mid-twentieth century, the boarding requirements for this train were predictable: secure a stable job, find a romantic partner, and voilà! You had a ticket to a fulfilling adult life, complete with homeownership, family, and a path to retirement.

Renal Transporter Alterations in Patients with Chronic Liver Diseases: Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis, Alcohol-Associated, Viral Hepatitis, and Alcohol-Viral Combination
Abstract Alterations in hepatic transporters have been identified in precirrhotic chronic liver diseases (CLDs) that result in pharmacokinetic variations causing adverse drug reactions (ADRs). However, the effect of CLD on the expression of renal transporters is unknown despite the overwhelming evidence of kidney injury in CLD patients. This study determines the transcriptomic and proteomic expression profiles of renal drug transporters in patients with defined CLD etiology.
How to evaluate if family legacy assets are suitable for your retirement plan
By Robert Klein, CPA Numerous books and articles have been written about the importance of creating, celebrating, and preserving a family legacy. Many address non-financial aspects, including beliefs, values, traditions, and stories passed down from one generation to the next. Tax planning strategies for preserving high-value assets such as a business or real estate for subsequent generations have been the focus of the financial side of family legacy planning.
How Can You Avoid a Surprise with Medicare Premiums?
By Robert Klein, CPA There are several factors that affect your health insurance premiums before you turn 65. These include age, number of family members on your plan, where you live, type of plan, deductible, and whether you qualify for federal financial assistance. It's a new ballgame when you turn 65, assuming that you enroll in Medicare Part B. Your premium, which is payable monthly, is determined by one thing - income. It's irrelevant how old you are or where you live.

There are numerous strategies that can be used to provide readily available tax-free liquidity to pay for planned and unforeseen expenses throughout retirement by monetizing a portion of the equity in one’s home.
Nonqualified Fixed Income Annuities: A Timeless Tax and Retirement Income Planning Opportunity

Take Some Chips Off the Table and Add them to Older Income FIAs
By Robert Klein, CPA Every year since 2014 when I purchased a fixed index annuity (FIA) with an income rider in my SEP-IRA, I have added $20,000 to it. Furthermore, I plan on continuing to do this until I retire. Why did I purchase a FIA with an income rider in my SEP-IRA in 2014 and add to it each year? For the same reasons that I am making the recommendation to consider doing so today.
RMDs Required Again in 2021
By Robert Klein, CPA 2020 was an eventful year for required minimum distributions, commonly referred to as RMDs. There were two pieces of legislation that were effective in 2020 that produced three noteworthy changes affecting RMDs. RMD Background Before discussing the changes, some RMD background is in order. Stem cells on the ballot

Six Stealth Taxes That Can Derail Your Retirement
By Robert Klein, CPA The goal of retirement income planning is to optimize the longevity of your after-tax retirement income to pay for your projected inflation-adjusted expenses. Carve Out Your 401(k) Company Stock for Favorable NUA Tax Treatment
By Robert Klein, CPA Distributions from a traditional 401(k) plan are generally taxable as ordinary income at your regular income tax rates. This includes pre-tax contributions plus earnings. If your traditional 401(k) plan is rolled over to a traditional IRA, the same rule applies when you withdraw funds from your IRA. Company Stock NUA Exception There's an exception to this rule for highly appreciated company stock held in a 401(k) plan.
Keep Your Eye on QBI before You Rothify
By Robert Klein, CPA As stated in the introduction to my last Retirement Daily article, “Should You do a Roth IRA Conversion After Age 62?,” Roth IRA conversions are an excellent tool for optimizing after-tax income throughout retirement when done strategically as part of a holistic retirement income plan. The timing and amount of Roth IRA conversions needs to be carefully analyzed as part of a multi-year, or staged, Roth IRA conversion plan.
Should You do a Roth IRA Conversion after Age 62?
By Robert Klein Roth IRA conversions are an excellent tool for optimizing after-tax income throughout retirement, when done strategically as part of a holistic retirement income plan. Roth IRA conversions are under-utilized even though they can provide greater after-tax retirement income than would otherwise be possible. The primary reason for this is a reluctance to plan for and prepay income tax liability attributable to conversions.
5 Retirement Plan Beneficiary Mistakes to Avoid
By Robert Klein, CPA When you die, you want to make sure that your assets are distributed to your intended beneficiaries. The transfer of retirement plans at death is controlled by beneficiary forms associated with individual plans. Beneficiary forms supersede all other estate planning documents. Directly named, or designated, beneficiaries will be the ones who receive the funds. Beneficiary mistakes can result in retirement plan assets being transferred to unintended beneficiaries.

Podcasts - Is Your Social Security Check Safe from Medicare? (Guest: Robert Klein)
April 10, 2019 By AnneMarie Schieber, Robert Klein Medicare and Social Security are two separate programs. Robert Klein, a retirement advisor and policy advisor to The Heartland Institute, says retirees need to consider them together because out-of-pocket Medicare costs can add up quickly. After years of crunching numbers for retirees, Robert Klein can show how the co-pays, deductibles and supplemental health insurance costs can eat up what many people collect from Social Security.
