BUFFALO, N.Y. — A new study suggests Extreme Risk Protection Order laws, also known as red flag laws, may significantly reduce firearm suicides without leading to increases in suicides by other methods. The orders allow courts to temporarily remove firearms from individuals deemed at high risk of harming themselves or others. The study analyzed U.S. county-level suicide data, focusing on states that enacted ERPO laws without simultaneously passing other firearm legislation.

Judge, prosecutor agree to dismiss charges against Olean High School principal

OLEAN, N.Y. — Charges against Olean High School Principal Jeffrey Andreano were dismissed with prejudice Tuesday in Olean City Court, ending a case tied to an alleged incident involving a student in December. Andreano was arrested Dec. 12 by Olean police and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, and second-degree harassment, a violation. The judge dismissed both charges after finding they were unsupported by evidence, according to Andreano’s attorney, Barry Covert.

Hundreds of NY State Police Misconduct Records Now Public

Without public announcement, New York State Police last year began uploading police disciplinary files to its website, making available more than 500 reports dating back to 2001. It’s a big shift for State Police, who fought the release of the same records after the repeal of Civil Rights Law 50-a in 2020. The law shielded personnel records of police officers, firefighters, and correction officers. Despite the repeal, State Police often denied the release of records and faced litigation.
