High wind speed reduces water use efficiency across terrestrial ecosystems
Abstract Wind is a fundamental driver of land–atmosphere exchange, yet its role in ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE) remains unclear. Here using global eddy-covariance observations combined with Earth system model simulations, we show that WUE declines with increasing wind speed across most terrestrial ecosystems, driven primarily by wind-induced increases in evapotranspiration and secondarily by reductions in gross primary productivity.
RNF130 ameliorates renal injury and inflammation by inhibiting macrophage pyroptosis through ubiquitination degradation of PDCD4 in male mice
Abstract Macrophage pyroptosis has been identified as a contributor to acute kidney injury (AKI), but the underlying mechanisms involved remain unclear. Herein, we identify that ring finger protein 130 (RNF130) RNF130 is significantly downregulated in both mice and patients with AKI. Myeloid cell-specific loss of RNF130 aggravates renal pathological damage and facilitates macrophage pyroptosis in AKI mouse models.
Precise construction of antiparallel-stacked 2D imine covalent organic frameworks for atmospheric water harvesting
Abstract Interlayer stacking modes dictated by noncovalent interactions play a pivotal role in influencing pore structures and emergent properties of 2D covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs), yet precise control over stacking modes remains challenging.
Quantifying Vegetation Dependence on Groundwater: Evidence From Northern China's Drylands
1 Introduction Drylands, covering approximately 47% of the Earth's terrestrial surface and hosting 2.7 billion people, are particularly vulnerable to water scarcity, desertification and land degradation, resulting in fragile ecosystems (Kløve et al., 2014; Rohde, Stella, et al., 2024; Yirdaw et al., 2017).
Intelligent discovery and precision regulation of taste peptides: a systematic review from taste mechanisms to health applications
Abstract Taste peptides uniquely bridge sensory pleasure and bioactivity, yet their industrial translation is hindered by empirical discovery bottlenecks and a limited understanding of their behavior within complex food systems. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI)-driven prediction platforms, highlighting the paradigm shift from traditional trial-and-error screening to rational, high-throughput design across diverse taste modalities.
Alternative tandem transcription initiation links noncoding variants to human disease through translational control
Abstract Alternative tandem transcription initiation is a pervasive mechanism of gene regulation, yet its genetic impact on human disease remains largely unknown. Here, we systematically quantify the genetic regulation of alternative tandem transcription initiation across 25,859 samples from 49 normal human tissues and 33 tumor tissues.
hnRNPK condensates facilitate enhancer–promoter looping and RNA polymerase II recruitment
Abstract Enhancer RNAs interact with promoter-derived RNAs to dictate enhancer–promoter looping, but the RNA-binding protein that mediates this process has remained unidentified. Here we identify hnRNPK as a general structural regulator that preferentially binds to nascent RNAs transcribed from enhancer and promoter regions, promoting enhancer–promoter looping and transcriptional activation.

The Long-Term Quality of Life Study for Patients Received Chest Wall Reconstruction by Using 3D-Printed PEEK Implants
1 Introduction As an essential biomechanical structure, the chest wall maintains thoracic contour and shields intrathoracic visceral organs. Its muscular tissues, together with intrathoracic negative pressure, jointly drive respiratory movement. Chest wall tumors are rare neoplasms predominantly occurring as secondary lesions, while primary chest wall tumors only account for approximately 5% of all cases. Among the primary tumors, malignant ones account for about 60% [1, 2].

Paper-based lead-free thin film X-ray detectors with high sensitivity and superior environmental stability
Abstract Low-dimensional, lead-free halide perovskites are promising candidates for next-generation radiation detectors due to their favorable optoelectronic properties and environmental safety. Among them, Cs3Bi2Br9 has thus attracted significant attention for its layered structure and intrinsic stability. Although Cs3Bi2Br9 has already been explored for X-ray detection, simple and scalable fabrication routes for its thin films on flexible low-cost substrates remain underdeveloped.
An autonomous AI agent for knowledge and data cooperation in ED clinical decision support
|
Abstract Medical knowledge accumulation and clinical practice form a closed loop, yet enabling effective cooperation between the two elements, namely autonomously distilling updated knowledge from dynamic data to guide practice, remains challenging, especially in the emergency department (ED). To overcome this, we developed an autonomous AI agent that integrates established medical knowledge graphs with dynamic clinical data into a hybrid graph of over 800,000 nodes.

MRPL3 enhances mitochondrial function via the TOMM40/PGC-1α/TFAM axis to drive early recurrence in hepatocellular carcinoma
Abstract Early recurrence after curative resection remains a major obstacle to improving outcomes in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Given the pivotal role of mitochondrial reprogramming in tumor progression, we investigated the contribution of mitochondrial ribosomal protein L3 (MRPL3) to postoperative early recurrence and its underlying mechanisms. Label-free quantitative proteomic profiling of HCC tissues identified MRPL3 as a recurrence-associated candidate.
Yeast mitochondrial adaptation to freeze thaw stress depends on pre freeze fermentation state
Abstract During frozen dough production, transportation, and processing, temperature fluctuations expose yeast to freeze-thaw (FT) stress, causing yeast cellular damage. This study investigated the effects of FT cycles on mitochondrial structure and function in yeast under different fermentation processes. As FT cycles increased, cell mortality, mitochondrial membrane potential, and superoxide anion (O2.-) generation rate significantly increased, with the highest values observed in the FT6 group.
Engineering an AIEgen-based platform integrating CRISPR/Cas9 to remodel the tumor microenvironment and reinforce photo-immunotherapy against glioblastom
Abstract Glioblastoma remains one of the most lethal brain tumors. Although immunotherapy and other therapeutic modalities has achieved significant therapeutic success in several malignancies, its efficacy in glioblastoma remains limited primarily due to the complex tumor microenvironment (TME) and physiological barriers such as the blood–brain barrier (BBB).

Mechanisms of Vegetation Community Self-Organization Driven by Water Availability in Arid Northwest China
1 Introduction In arid and semi-arid ecosystems, vegetation frequently exhibits striking spatial patterns—such as bands, patches, and labyrinthine structures (Hu et al., 2023; Werner, 1999)—that arise not from external spatial templates but from intrinsic interactions between organisms and their environment (Kéfi et al., 2011, 2024).
The impact of extreme climates on the expansion of local government debt in China: an empirical study based on mediating mechanisms, moderating effect and heterogeneity
Abstract Extreme climates may have a significant impact on the sustainability of public finances. This paper empirically examines the impact of extreme climates on the expansion of local government debt by taking 317 prefecture-level cities in China from 2010 to 2023 as the sample and using the number of annual extreme climate days as the proxy for extreme climates. It also analyzes the mediating mechanisms, moderating effect and heterogeneity.
Dramatic increase in ecosystem respiration causes record-breaking atmospheric CO 2 growth rate in 2024
|
Abstract 2024 is the hottest year on record, accompanied by extreme precipitation, droughts and fires. The global atmospheric CO2 growth rate in 2024 reached a historic high of 3.73 ppm yr-1, significantly surpassing the previous record set during the 2015/16 El Niño event. Here, we investigate the causes and underlying mechanisms of this record-high growth rate by combining satellite-based atmospheric inversions and estimates of gross primary production and fire emissions.

The safety margin of small-scale tree cover loss in global fragmented forests
|
Abstract Climatic and anthropogenic disturbances have led to intense small-scale tree cover loss in global forests. However, it remains unclear when forest attributes at a large scale (e.g., 0.05° resolution) will decline in response to such sub-grid (e.g., 30-m) tree cover losses within forest ecosystems.

Pantropical moist forests are converging towards a middle leaf longevity - Nature Communications
Abstract Leaf longevity is a fundamental plant trait that largely explains ecosystem functional dynamics in global pantropical moist forests. However, the signs, magnitudes, and mechanisms of the spatiotemporal variations in leaf longevity with ongoing climate change are still lacking. Using both ground measurements and gridded leaf age-dependent leaf area index data, we map the continental-scale variability of annual mean leaf longevity across pantropical moist forests over 2001–2023.

Purely electronic insulator-metal transition in rutile VO2 - Nature Communications
Abstract Volatile resistive switching in neuromorphic computing can be tuned by external stimuli such as temperature or electric-field. However, this type of switching is generally coupled to structural changes, resulting in slower reaction speed and higher energy consumption when incorporated into an electronic device. The vanadium dioxide (VO2), which has near room temperature metal-insulator transition (MIT), is an archetypical volatile resistive switching system.
