Successful 22-Hour Rescue and Release of a 19.5 M Beached Sperm Whale
1 Introduction Whales, dolphins, and porpoises play a vital role in maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems by supporting nutrient cycles and enhancing biodiversity (Savoca et al. 2021). However, cetacean strandings are often fatal, causing severe anatomical damage as the animals are exposed to an entirely different environment (Morell 2009; Souter et al. 2025). When beached and left uncared for, whales may suffer from dehydration, fractures, and even be crushed by their own weight (Souter et al.

Solvent-Induced Structural Modulation in Nanoscale Covalent Organic Frameworks Enables High-Performance NO 2 Sensing
1 Introduction Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are constructed by linking purely organic monomers through strong covalent bonds in an ordered manner, forming extended networks with well-defined porous channels [1, 2]. Guided by the principles of reticular chemistry and enabled by the powerful toolbox of organic and polymer chemistry, COFs exhibit exceptional synthetic diversity [3, 4].
CROSSTCR: a curated resource for TCR cross-reactivity and off-target risk assessment in precision cancer immunotherapy
Abstract T cell receptor (TCR) cross-reactivity, the ability of one TCR to recognize multiple peptide–MHC (pMHC) complexes, is essential for immune adaptability but poses major safety risks for TCR-engineered cancer therapies, as molecular mimicry between tumor and self-peptides has led to severe off-target toxicities. We developed CROSSTCR, a manually curated, cross-reactivity-focused database integrating experimentally validated evidence of TCR cross-reactivity.
Using tiered accreditation and decentralized governance to achieve population-based equity in pulmonary and critical care medicine in the Chinese mainland
Abstract Pulmonary and critical care medicine has become essential for managing severe respiratory conditions, yet many countries struggle to expand such services equitably across regions. Since 2018, the Chinese mainland has pursued a national strategy to establish specialized pulmonary and critical care departments using flexible accreditation standards that allow hospitals to progress at differently based on local capacity.
Iron overload disrupts bone homeostasis via dual pathways: inducing ferroptosis of preosteoblastic cells and shaping a proinflammatory immune milieu
Abstract Iron overload is regarded as an independent risk factor for osteoporosis, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms remain incompletely understood. In this study, we systematically investigated the impact of iron overload on bone homeostasis using a combination of in vivo and in vitro models. An iron overload rat model was established, and investigations were complemented by cellular assays utilizing mouse embryonic osteoblast precursor cells (MC3T3-E1) and macrophages.
Van der Waals strain hardening and large uniform tensile elongation in GaSe
|
Abstract Van der Waals (vdW) semiconductors are promising candidates for next-generation electronic devices. Although plasticity has been observed in these materials, strain hardening and large uniform tensile elongation remain elusive. Here we report that GaSe single crystals exhibit exceptional tensile ductility when loaded along directions inclined to the [0001] zone axis, achieving uniform tensile elongation exceeding 40% together with pronounced strain hardening.

Development of a novel external fixation device for inducing knee arthrofibrosis in rats
Abstract Arthrofibrosis (AF) is a common pathological condition characterized by joint dysfunction. However, traditional non-invasive external fixation methods are difficult to maintain on the small limbs of rats. This study aimed to develop a novel, non-invasive, and stable rat model of knee arthrofibrosis using a thermoplastic polymer resin. Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into a Sham group and immobilization groups (1, 2, 4, and 6 weeks).

Giant ZT enhancement in rhombohedral GeTe-based thermoelectric materials
Abstract The peak figure of merit (ZT) of GeTe-based thermoelectric (TE) materials is typically attained in the high-temperature cubic phase, where the inevitable phase transition raises concerns over interfacial instability during operation. Therefore, developing high-performance rhombohedral GeTe below the phase transition temperature represents a more viable path toward practical applications.

Effects and mechanisms of iron overload on the proliferation and differentiation of preosteoblastic cells via a 3D microsphere culture system
1 Introduction Osteoporosis is a common skeletal disorder characterized by reduced bone mass, deterioration of bone tissue microstructure, and increased bone fragility, leading to a higher risk of fractures and functional impairment (Wu et al., 2023). Affecting more than 200 million individuals globally, osteoporosis has become a major health concern for the elderly population and postmenopausal women (Kumari et al., 2024). Osteoporotic fractures are serious complications of this condition.

Abstract Silent speech interfaces decode speech intent without audible sound, enabling communication in settings where voice is inaccessible, or for individuals with speech impairments. Here we examine how sensing technologies shape the capabilities of silent speech interfaces. We compare off-, on- and in-body sensing modalities, identifying how proximity, coupling stability and invasiveness govern signal fidelity, robustness and user comfort.

Aqueous and Surfactant‐Free Synthesis of Nanoscale Covalent Organic Frameworks
Introduction Size and morphology are critical parameters that govern the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials.[1, 2] Therefore, the controlled synthesis of nanomaterials—such as metals,[3] metal oxides,[4] carbons,[5] and porous frameworks[6]—with tunable sizes and morphologies remain a central goal in nanotechnology and materials science.
APP Induces AICD‐Mediated Autophagy‐Dependent Axon Degeneration
1 Introduction Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-associated degenerative disorder originating from lesions or degeneration within the central nervous system (Querfurth and LaFerla 2010; Wood et al. 2020). Current estimates indicate that AD affects over 35 million individuals worldwide (Deng et al. 2020). Key pathological features of AD include the presence of extracellular senile plaques, intracellular neurofibrillary tangles, and neuronal dysfunction (Goedert et al. 1991; Lammich et al.
The Evolutionarily Conserved TPM1 Super‐Enhancer Drives Skeletal Muscle Regeneration via Mechanotransduction Signaling
1 Introduction Skeletal muscle regeneration is a highly orchestrated process reliant on muscle stem cells (MuSCs), whose fate is governed by complex epigenetic and transcriptional networks.[1-3] Among these regulators, super-enhancers (SEs)—large clusters of transcriptional enhancers with exceptional capacity to drive expression of lineage-defining genes—have emerged as critical epigenetic arbiters of cell identity and tissue regeneration, including in myogenesis.[4, 5] Notably, mechanical...

Gut frailty: the core of reversing frailty
Abstract Imbalances in gut microbiota have been implicated in numerous age-related degenerative diseases and unhealthy aging. Frail individuals often exhibit severe malnutrition and gastrointestinal dysfunction. Recent studies have demonstrated a correlation between physical frailty, cognitive decline, gastrointestinal function, and intestinal microbiota, leading to the introduction of the concept of ‘gut frailty’.

Bidirectional Communication Between Circadian Rhythm Disruption and Frailty: A Hypothesis From Gut Microbiota Metabolites
Abstract Disruption of circadian rhythms and the condition of frailty are believed to be interrelated. Various manifestations of sleep disturbances, including insomnia, disrupted sleep-wake cycles, and alterations in sleep timing, are considered integral components of circadian rhythm disruption, which are also observed in individuals with frailty. Extensive research has established a connection between gut microbiota and both frailty and circadian rhythm disruption.
