Sparta, Wrens share police chief in new arrangement

SPARTA, Ga. (WPGA) - Sparta Police Chief Tommie Walker Jr. has been named chief of police for the city of Wrens, about 40 miles away, and will serve both communities simultaneously while Sparta searches for a permanent replacement. Walker was sworn in as Wrens’ chief on Tuesday according to Sparta Mayor R. Allen Haywood. “I said if you will serve us until we can get our situation straightened out and get us a new chief and all, and he said yea I think that will be fine,” Haywood said.

Free swimming program aims to prevent child drownings in Macon

(WPGA) - A new free swimming program is coming to Macon this month to teach children water safety skills after a series of local drownings. State Rep. Tangie Herring, D-District 145, said recent drowning incidents in her district prompted her to act. “The Lake Tobesofkee incident that happened last year, which was in my district, caught my attention that we had an issue when it came to water safety,” Herring said.
